How much does a guitar cost?

Ok I REALY need some advice

Ok here's the deal the other day I gave my best friend a call and told him that I'm going to getting 4 baby sitting jobs and each pays about $100 I also told him that I plan to buy a guitar with that money plus another $100 I had save form by b-day and he just started telling me how I might be able to get an okkk guitar and then he started naming all these REALY expensive guitar brands and stuff....I wanted to strangle him I'll I wanted was a basic acoustic not a $1,000 guitar! So anyway I was wondering does a guitar realy cost more than $500 Or was he just trying to anoy me? Cause i know he knows a LOT about guitars but I realy don't think one costs that much money.

Zelda speaketh the truth. They price range is wide, indeed. It's the same with all instruments. With me, it's the piano. My advice is to actually go to a store that would sell the kind of guitar you want. You would be able to see just how much money you're looking at, and which brands are the best for the price range you've settled (or contemplated) on. Good luck. ^^

Your friend is trying to annoy you. *hehe* Actually, Erin, my guitar costs almost $1,000; but, that's because it's a sweet Takamine that I've wanted my whole life. If you just want an acoustic, believe it or not, a nice Ovation - since they have lost popularity - can be bought at around $500 - $750. If you're a beginner and want a thin neck, easy to grasp I'd go with Ovation - that's the guitar I learned to play on because I have really small hands. Now, Fender will do fine and you can get those fairly cheap. They have a good-sized neck too.

The main thing is, yes you can get a decent guitar for around $500. Go to the music store and take your time and try them out and see how they feel. Many of the big companies make off-brands for cheaper, but similar quality. The best way to get a guitar, though is not by a name, but how it feels in your hand when you play it.

But I'm planning on buying a guitar with a thinner neck. I have small hands, too, and I wear myself out trying to play bar chords. -__-;

The point of this is: See if you can buy a used guitar. They're better than people think.

Eccckkk, I avoid Ovations like the Plague. They just don't sound good--and the plastic body doesn't help.

My advice to you--unless you're very serious about playing the guitar (especially if you plan to be in a band or Church group), don't spend more than $300. You should find OK instruments from Fender, Ibanez etc. for that price.

Also, make sure to read where the guitar was made (usually inside the body or on the headstock). Avoid the Chinese ones like you'd avoid the Ovation ones. Mexican ones are OK, I'm told, and the American/Euro/Japanese ones are in the no$ebleed range. But they sound good.

As I said, because of young people today and their biases, they think that Ovations are no good. Because of this, you can find some great guitars with fantastic sounds for uber cheap.

Now, I know this is Ingemar's opinion, and he is welcome to have his opinion. I can only go by the guitars I've played in my two and half decades of playing various guitars. Fenders, Ibanez and Yamahas are all basically the same to me, when it comes to the feel of playing them. I think Takamine is a step above these brands, IMHO.

Ovations were innovative in the 70s, and they have quietly been scoffed for the last decade. Why? I don't really know when some great guitarists play them. They're not "plastic" as Ingemar says. They have a non-wood composite for the back oval which is different, and I think is why their acoustic/electrics sound so good.

Anyways, because of young men today you can get Ovations for the cheap. Because they wouldn't be caught dead with one.

However, these are the reasons why I suggested an Ovation. I go on how a guitar feels in my hand and the sound is what you make from it when you play. The "action" on an Ovation is the fastest I've ever played. The strings are mounted closer to the frets, which makes it extremely easy for beginners and women's hands. The neck is the thinnest neck you'll get on any acoustic. Also, the design on the body for the string hook-up makes it the easiest guitar to replace strings on - I mean the "easiest." That is one thing I miss about my old Ovation, is changing strings. The pegs on every other brand are a pain. You can buy a slim-line guitar and its small.

Ovation is so unpopular its a blessing for those who want a nice guitar for cheap. It is not a plastic guitar. It has wood everywhere except on the oval backing.

The main reason I commented that an Ovation would be good is because you say you're a beginner, and it is the easiest guitar to play for a beginner.

Of course, you don't have to take my opinion. Go to the guitar store and just run your hands along the frets and see what I mean about the "quick" action.

I don't want to start an argument. I think you need to try before you buy and these days Ovations are just a steal. When I buy my next guitar, Lord willing, I'm buying an Ovation again.

the alvarez are only like 500 and they have a really great sound and finnish, if your just starting out though you might want to go to a guitar store and look at all the differant models they have in your price range, there are some realy cheap ones out there with great sound too, just my experiance but never trust the salesmen on whats the best for you.... you'll regret it

I like my Ibanez *hugs it* I know not the top brand but I'm so tired of seein so many people with the same gibson guitar I want somethin different >_<
