My parents aren't really aware enough about anime to freak out about it, and now I'm out of the house so I don't really have to worry. Of course, my niece (older than me, by the way) has a hatred for the entire industry, regardless of the fact she's probably never seen anything outside of 5 seconds of Pokémon or some box in the video store. I am going to be spending thanksgiving at her house, with my parents there... She may try to turn my parents against it so they'll confront me when I have no means of escaping (yeah, she's like that...)
I got into it before it started coming up with my Mom... When there was discussion abot Pokémon, my mom got wary of that (I was into that as early as 95, as soon as I heard about it) but she said she mostly trusts me... She didn't like Sailormon and guilted me into throwing them away (I had a movie, tapes, and a small collection of Mixx manga... ) I tried to keep them from seeing any because of how quickly they react to things, but I finally gave in and decided to test the waters with "Grave of the Fireflies" I figured if there was anything I could try out on them, that was the safest one. My mom liked it, but my dad thought it was pointless... Sad movies are entirely lost on him. I also showed them the censored version of the theatrical cut of "Léon" which they had about the same reaction to, but the opening really bothered my mom. She was into stuff like "The Last Don" but the fact of a child being killed really bothered her... So, I try to be honest about my interests but also carefull at the same time... I'm old enough now they don't restrict me from viewing anything except for, of course, Harry Potter... My mom won't budge on that one when I'm living at home, and she guilts me if she finds out I've been watching or reading it when I'm not living at home. As far as teh anime goes, she's sorta wary, but she's told me not to worry about Lynn Ann.
I am pretty "liberal" when it comes to my media... I take an intelectual and artistic stance ona lot of things, but
1. Obey your parents (after they gave me the "no" on harry potter, even being 21, I stopped watching it at home)
2. Avoid areas you're weak... Your watching movies and TV shows can tap into all sorts of areas of weak faith. There is nothing sinful inherantly about watching these shows, but if it is a temptation that does bring sin, it's bad for you. Don't condemn those who's faith in that area is weaker, but don't condemn those who's faith in that area is stronger who have the freedom to watch those things either.
That is in the "don't do it" side
On the other side, These things are not entirely worthless... I'm sick of people saying that... TV is worthless, anime is worthless, games are worthless, art is worthless, music is worthless, or (what I'd be more likely to say) sports are worthless, You can derive much worth from media and entertainment. Relaxation, contemplation, restoration (such as cheering up), even conviction and change... That's a topic for another thread, though. There are lots of "good things" that are bad for other people because they were not meant to do them, becasue they were prohibited from doing them, or because it tempts them in their weak areas. All those things must be considered, and God and his word must be our first priority. When that is taken care of, the other things will fall into place over time. Anyhow... That's the end of my rant...
Above all the things I said except putting God first: Children (AKA all those living at home up to the age of 999) obey your parents, even if they exasperate you (meaning annoy you to the point of exaustion with nagging or arbitrary rule). Oh, and parents, don't exasperate your children, even if they don't obey you... It's not your responsibility that your parents are being fair, it is your responsibility to obey... And, oh, could someone get the plank out of my eye here... Yeah... I really shouldn't be talking... I have a bit of a problem with authority, but only the grating kind... Of course, I should take even more care to obey and be loving to the grating kind of authority...
Um.. Yeah... everythign I say recently comes back on my own head... Which is good.
