Ninja Scroll

Postby Shinji » Tue Oct 12, 2004 1:29 am

I am a newby to CAA. I enjoyed ninja scroll many years ago when I purchased the video. Recently however I bought the dvd, which of course is uncut, and I have some doubts whether it is a good movie to own. What do you think out there???

"The advice I like to give young artists, or really anybody who’ll listen to me, is not to wait around for inspiration. Inspiration is for amateurs; the rest of us just show up and get to work. If you wait around for the clouds to part and a bolt of lightning to strike you in the brain, you are not going to make an awful lot of work. All the best ideas come out of the process; they come out of the work itself. Things occur to you. If you’re sitting around trying to dream up a great art idea, you can sit there a long time before anything happens. But if you just get to work, something will occur to you and something else will occur to you and something else that you reject will push you in another direction. Inspiration is absolutely unnecessary and somehow deceptive. You feel like you need this great idea before you can get down to work, and I find that’s almost never the case." - Chuck Close[/color]

We have an official review of Ninja Scroll in the review section, which expresses the administration's feelings on it.

In short, whatever the plot or concept, the strong violence and sexual content makes it in my opinion impossible to recommend.

Welcome. Hope you enjoy your visits here.

Ninja Scroll would have been my favourite anime if it wasn't so sickening and perverse. The story is good while the action sequences, the climax, etc was exhilirating and somewhat intelligent; the movie as almost the same tone as a spaghetti western and I enjoyed that.

But the story's moral climate (multiple rapes, obnoxious gore, perverse people in general) makes me hate it in the extreme. Which is a shame; if the director did not insert all that pornography then I would have proudly displayed it in my DVD collection, but as it stands now I wouldn't even grace it even with a budget-bin purchase.

Some animes tend to go a bit overboard, but Ninja Scroll is scraping barnacles off the Titanic.

Ninja Scroll crosses the line for acceptable anime in my opinion. While it does have great animation and a pretty good story overall. Like bigsleepj said the scenes of rape, fountains of blood and gore, and with the needless perversion make it an anime I could not reccomend.

I agree. It was one of my first watched animes and i didn't much care for it. It had to much gore, bad language and sexual content. Does anyone know if the TV series is the same along those lines? Just curious.

From what I understand, both the Ninja Resurrection OVA and Ninja Scroll TV carry over the same elements of extreme violence and sexual content. I also must point out that while Ninja Resurrection is not officially related to Ninja Scroll, they're similar enough that people often link them together.

Ninja Scroll TV does not have the extreme violence and sexual content of the movie. It's still plenty violent, but there are no sexual themes at all that I can remember. It has a 15+ rating due to the violence, and I'd say that's a pretty good gauge for the show.

I'm not a huge fan of the ninja genre, but I thought the TV show was alright. It had a decent story and some good plot twists to it. If you're a fan of Ninja shows and not too squeamish about violence, it's a good pick up.

Porn/hentai focuses entirely on the graphic sex/sexual themes. Ninja Scroll does not, which is why it's not classified as hentai.

I'm certainly not justifying it or anything however. I have no desire to see this movie anytime in the future.

According to Webster, "Pornography: Art with obscene or unchaste treatment or subjects." "Obscene: Indecent; Offensive to modesty; lewd." Seems Ninja scroll, is obscene/ pornographic in violence and sexuallity. At any rate, Ninja Scroll shouldn't be viewed by anyone, no matter how mature they may be, and I'd be surprised if anyone would disagree- especially since there seems to be nothing mature about it.
