Swords never run out of ammo.

( theme music to the good the bad and the ugly) A Gun slinging samurai walks down a dusty road, the sound of his spurs anounceing his arival *chink, chink chink* He stares down his oponent, a small, slight built man with a trench coat.

"Its time we settle whos the best" the Samurai says, his voice rough and gravely. He frowns slightly when he hears no pre fight banter. "Fine," he says with distaste," have it your way, .............. DRAW!" he pulls a katana from his hip with his right hand and a revolver with his left, he unleashes with a short volly.

The trenchcoated fighter shoulder rolls to the right , the wind blows his coat open as he reaches for his weapon.

The samurai rushes forward trying to take his foe before he could collect himself only to stop mid step, he looked death in the face

The little man pulled a loaded crocodile from its holster and smiled.

The screen fades to black

As the scene comes into view again the samurai's sword lay in the dusty street, the coated man slips the slightly bulging crocodile into its holster once more and moves on.

Spoken from someone who has probably never even touched either. Please, if your going to comment....don't be foolish. Or, go watch the movie the last Samurai. There is a reason that wars switched. While I own both I prefer a gun over a sword. Both require skill.

Guns ... my hunting people have a hard enough time with a long range weapon ... we would never have venison or partridge if they reverted to using swords ... plus they're fun to shoot (guns are fun to shoot at targets) and I've never had the opportunity to use a sword (if i was able to i would likely change my opinion ... but guns are more practical these days)

In these times a gun hands down it doesn't take a genius to figure that out. If we're talking in terms of practicality it shouldn't even be a question. Some of you guys are too caught up with the romantic view of a sword wielding warrior.:P

Hmm...something told me not to say that because it may have been misinterpreted. I take it that you didn't appreciate that comment at all. I said that with a little bit of jest in my tone but I guess that wasn't the best way to put that. Yes, I never handled a gun nor a sword (besides a bb gun and a fake plastic sword but I guess those don't count :eyeroll: ).

Hmm... let me see if I can rephrase my response:

I know that a lot of times, instead of fighting someone fair and square, people will just use guns to have an advantage over someone else who is only armed with their fists. Which is why I said "Cowards use guns" but I didn't mean to make that a generalization.

On the other hand, a gun can be good for self-defense. Or it can be used for sport. Or it can be used for show. Whatever.

Looking at the flip side, yes, people can still kill innocent [or guilty] people with a sword but how many times do you hear that on the news? The way I see it, people mostly use swords when they engage in some sort of sword fighting or something.

But, if you think all of what I just said is a bunch of bull crap coming from a foolish mouth then take this as my answer:

I like swords better than guns.

Personally i have to disagree because though guns are pratical, anime in general is not a pratical thing. Sword fighting has alot more ability for cool moves and interesting plot twist than guns. I mean not much anime based around guns has cool attacks other than futuristic huge beams or moving fast. Anime like Kenshin (manga and anime), Inuyasha (manga and anime), Peacemaker(Manga and Anime), Bleach, and Legend of Soma (manga) show awsome moves that add to plot line and allow for character development. Swords take more time to learn and also allow for longer fights which in turn add to excitement. However i will take back my statement for Anime like Noir(Anime! and Manga???) and Cowboy Bebop(You better know this anime!!!) in which the gunfighting is awsome and still have all these things.

A sword if wielded with the proper speed and accuracy can be just as if not more deadly than a gun. Trust me, I have taken 5 years of Hiten and I know a thing or two about swords, likewise I have fired my fair share of guns.
In all honesty it depends on the situation at hand. If you are an assassin for example, you would want to use a sword because they cannot be traced like a bullet, but if you do not want to be seen by your victim then perhaps a gun, or in my experience, a well placed shriuken could do the trick.

Swords..."An Elegant weapon for an elegant era" or somethin like that I read it on one of my lightsaber boxes ^_^() as fun as guns may be (which they really are) I still prefer my katana.

guns win hands down in every situation except extreme close combat, where a well-trained sword fighter could well defeat a man armed with a gun. However, swords have the advantage of complete silence and never needing reloading - a good swordsman could best a mediocre shooter at medium and perhaps even long ranges (given the availability of cover and the type of gun being used.)

In that situation, a hand-to-hand fighter dominates both.

Ditto fists.
panegryst wrote: a good swordsman could best a mediocre shooter at medium and perhaps even long ranges (given the availability of cover and the type of gun being used.)

Perhaps, unless the opponent is a Wild-West style quickdrawer. You also mentioned the caveat of available cover and weapon type. Real life doesn't conform to ideals and manuals, so when it comes to the nitty-gritty, you gotta make do with what you have.

Anyone who knows me knows my preference of guns over swords. Having practiced with both (pistols, shotguns, and Kendo), my preference still stands. While both take skill, gunmanship requires (comparatively) very little initial training and finesse than swordsmanship. When you take into account that to be a good gunner doesn't require weeks upon months upon years to achieve (though seasoned shooters with numerous years under their belt are certainly better than others), it is no surprise that conscripts and peasants with firearms quickly reduced both knights and samurai to obsolescence.

Also, fictional stories should not form a basis for one's preference, since fiction bends to man's will while reality doesn't. Many of you cite anime, but let us remember that they are [I]cartoons] it is much easier to draw the impossible than to act it out. For all you Kenshin fans (of whom I am one of them), the fact that Makoto Shishio is still alive after being SHOT IN THE HEAD and BURNED IN OIL should clue you to Nobuhiro Watsuki's feeble grasp (or complete abandonment) of reality.

That is true, but blades chip and break much more often than you might think; and a bladeless sword is about as useful as a gun without ammo (even less so, if the gun is a rifle).

Anyone with a hand and an index finer could kill a swordsman from 10 meters. Unless they have palsy and a single shot breech loaded gun. There's a reason why we use guns today, it's because they work.

Erm, seems to me pretty obvious - swords of course. Guns are nice, but without bullets I don't see how they'd be much use! So swords it is - to all you 'gun people', happy blunt metal waving! :)

Having said that, here's a lovely article on the real-life difficulties of 'running someone through' - long, but worth the read - very informative:

Saying a gun is useless without bullets is like saying a sword is useless without a sharp edge. Of course it is if you want to mortally wound or kill the the person.:P

Awwwwwww. Someone had to go spoil my being clever!

Of course, if I wanted to be a pain I could say that they are in fact different. A sword by definition is sharp, a gun however does not by definition include bullets.

From Dictionary.com:
Sword = A weapon consisting typically of a long, straight or slightly curved, pointed blade having one or two cutting edges and set into a hilt.

Gun = #1 A weapon consisting of a metal tube from which a projectile is fired at high velocity into a relatively flat trajectory.
#2 A cannon with a long barrel and a relatively low angle of fire.
#3 A portable firearm, such as a rifle or revolver.
#4 A device resembling a firearm or cannon, as in its ability to project something, such as grease, under pressure or at great speed.

So, if we're following the precise text of the initial post my comment remains valid and all those who chose guns as the better option are going to end up in a world hurt should someone approach them who has a sword.

If we're going to be sensible and follow the (assumed) spirit of the thread allowing 'guns' to mean 'bullets included' then...well, let's not go there shall we! :)

Of course, all of that is only if I were going to be a pain.

:):)
