Networking two computers...

Postby inkhana » Fri Oct 08, 2004 1:06 pm

:?:

OK, I have two home computers that I want to put on a network, so that they can trade files between themselves and surf the internet. Both computers have a single Ethernet card. I have the instructions for what to do once the hardware is in place (as far as reconfiguring the comps to recognize each other on the network), but...I'm confused about what hardware to get! Switch, router hub? I have no clue. The only piece I have in my possession is a cat 6 crossover cable, but since I only have one jack in the ethernet card, and the DSL modem uses said jack, I can't hook the computers together. What do I need to do to get these two running on the internet? :bang:

Hmm... If you want both to talk to each other at the same time, and access the internet at the same time, you're going to need at minimum:
1. A hub.
2. 2 IP addresses from your ISP (or two allowed DHCP addresses).

Another option would be (if your ISP doesn't do sneaky stuff) would be to get a DSL router/firewall (good idea anyway!) and use that. A DSL router/firewall would have a hub built in, and it would provide DHCP for your two computers behind it. It would also hook into the main DSL modem, and the DSL modem would give it an IP address.

Does that help at all?

:D! Yes, it does, thanks a lot! In fact, I've got my whole system hooked up at the moment...I'm typing this from the second computer in the network. :thumb: I ended up buying a DSL router...not really what I wanted to do pricewise, but...*sigh* Oh well, it works great...:)

I was just going to suggest looking at this...

http://www.dslwebserver.com/

This is what I looked at to figure out how to get a second computer running as a server for my site on the same modem as our main online computer.

OK, that's enough out of you, Mr. Smarty Pants. I'm getting real sick and tired of you spaming to my threads. READ THE THREADS BEFORE YOU SPAM THEM, FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!!! You posted this kind of drivel to 4 theads in this forum in the span of two minutes. Do you think people don't know you are trying to artificially inflate your post count? How stupid do you think we are? It's annoying, and it's pointless. You are making me angry. You won't like me when I'm angry.
