I dont understand what all this "invitation" stuff is about... cant you just go to google and get it?

No, not yet. Right now you can only get it from an invitation.

yea I thought it was wierd too, It's almost as if

Pretty soon everyone is going to get invited by everyone. So they might as well open it up. BUT, right now they're still setting things up with the beta, they don't have advertising yet, so If they open it up to everyone, then a huge HORDE of people will sign up and cost google much money.

They'd rather have it more contained, because this way they can give out or take away invitations if they feel the need.
