VOTING! Preferances in Christian manga!

Talk about anything in here.

Postby lightningp » Fri Aug 27, 2004 10:43 pm

Hey Ann since I sort of made the simplified response over at the cc.net thread.
Here's the extended version.

1. I had a hard time picking between Action, comedy and romance. Even though I read Shonen Jump, I am shojo fanatic at heart. So I had to put down action. Still to me, romance is pretty good to put in a Christian manga if it is done tastefully in a Godly way. Same what I would say about humor. A good mix of all 3 would be cool.

2. Violence. I'm more leniant towards that. Especially in some genres of Christian Manga, when you make fight scenes got to have a certain level of realism to it so..a roughing up do not hurt. Hey even the Bible has some violence in it. Have you checked out the Old Testament lately?

3. I checked for homosexual themes. I was going to put fanservice. But then again why would anyone put fanservice in a Christian manga??? Homosexual themes would be a biggie for me because of scripture.

4. Series! Good Stories can't be told in just 200 pages. Some one shots are good but the ongoing series quality gives more time for not just the story flow and action but also character development sort of like you see the struggle of the character being at the final product. This is the writer in me coming out on this one- having everything beginning, middle and an end I guess.

5. Bookstores. Realistically, with shipping costs and doing online stuff its more of a security risk and also bookstores are more widespread and easily accesable. Now most bookstores offer discount cards so if you want to get more than one volume you get more of a discount.

6. Hmmm? This section is hard for me because I want to choose them all. So I had to go with what I know __>see siggy...Spiritual Warfare. I say even with a spiritual warfare manga you can add the fantasy element, get some humor in there, add some drama and romance, and a good real life element and its cool. The hardest thing about manga to me is doing one genre because when you have a story that mixes a lot of the genres its hard to stick to one catagory.

7. If the manga's good...it all matters. I want to see more manga adaptations of classic Christian literature as well as some of the well known books. Still if done right Left Behind, Omega Code, and Omega Code 2: Megeddo and the newest TBN film production based on Tommy Tenney's book, One Night With the King will all make good manga. Esp. One Night With the King because it is the story of Queen Esther. Still with Superbook being like it is...I am suprised no one did a manga adaptation of Superbook.

Thanks for putting up the poll Psycho Ann, it helps a lot when writing scripts and creating stories what is in demand from the population. I really think it is a good idea for what you did ^_^.

Mine were:

1. Action

2. violence; includes realistic amounts of blood when appropriate

3. homosexual themes (yaoi/yuri); incest; pedophilia (shota/lolita), etc

4. Series; more than one volume (each volume around 200+ pages)

5. In the local bookstore

6. Everyday life: stuggles of faith in our world

7. Only if the manga itself is good

These are my answers but also they're the tops one.

Ain't it cool.

Byes
a sad light shone
turning into wings that cuts the white darkness

shone upon by the cold sun
I had some limited freedom
the miraculous night cast by the mirror
started to remove my mask, my soul

on the other side of the collapsing wall
despair and hope looks the same
if there's a heart that's yet to be seen
lets head to the end of the prologue

in the world where the wind blows like a blade
what is it I should protect?
in a journey where I know one painful thing after another
I get closer to the true me

the fake light is disappearing
the true light is born
in these hands...

pierce through the night dyed in white
keep on creating a new era
create time with your heart
fly through the eternal white night

-English lyrics for White Night, True Light, the opening theme of D.N Angel

I don't know what I voted exactly.. was a while ago.. here are my thoughts:

1. Humor
2. Violence
3. questionable usage of Judeo-Christian ideas
4. I voted for Series, but I'm leaning more to One-Shot; single volume story (200+ pages) now.
5. Online
6. mix between spiritual battle and everyday life.. I don't really like ambiguous..
7. no idea..

1. Action- Its just how I am. I tend to shy away from any of the other categories except humor and only when it is tasteful.

2. Violence- This one would tie in with the first question really.

3. Blatant fanservice- unfortunately, everything else on that list is realistic. Fanservice however is not. In truth, homosexual themes are my number one vote besides fanservice. I hate it with a vehemence.

4. Series- I like buying graphic novels.

5. Online via order from major seller- I like using Barnes and Noble and there isn't anywhere near here that has a lot of manga.

6. Ambiguous- Its more of "other" to me. I would like something that has a message but is off the beaten path so to speak.

7. Liking original- If it is an adaption, it would be better if I liked what it came from first.

1) Action - because there seems to be little commerically produced comedy that I actually find humorous. I get my funnies from life and friends.

2) Violence - Indeed, perhaps because it is more easily justifiable in circumstances, or maybe because excesses in that area don't affect me personally as much as other areas do.

3) Questionable Judeo-Christian content - non-believers will be non-believers. We can't hold them to Christian standards, however, the Gospel is the Gospel and God is God, I hate it when truth is perverted, especially when so many people end up accepting that stuff as the actual truth.

4) Series - More room for depth and development.

5) Bookstore - because whilst I can look things up online, I rarely buy there. Prefer to see where my money is going.

6) Everyday life - that is, the way i see it, Christianity is all about the spiritual and the physical intermingling. Our spirituality is lived out in the day to day, not in some spiritual realm. The comic/series would be more able to have relevance and make an impact (beyond just escapism) if it dealt with 'real' people.

7) As long as the anime is good - I want what I'm buying to be good, not what it's based on. Having said that, if it's a replication of an original I'm very much in love with, they had better get it right! :)

Well....wow. O_o Um, I don't know how to answer these questions as there's no answers that fit what I think...the only anime/manga I won't touch is hentai and yaoi/yuri and that's because I just don't want to see the stuff. Other than that, mecha stories are the only kind I don't like and that's because they bore me. As for manga that draw on other religions...it's not like Japan was Christian from the get-go. They have their own way of seeing things, and I like that. Learning about other belief systems is fun for me. As far as anime that uses certain aspects of Christianity, I've only seen uses of bits of Catholosism (sp). And that'd be in Hellsing which rocks the house regardless.

And a little tidbit for the maker of the quiz.....though Christian, Tolkien ABHORRED allegory so it's not like any Christian undertones in his work are intentional.

I'm curious....am I the only one who couldn't really answer the quiz? Or the only one who, how do I say it...., chooses what to read based on my own likes? Ranma 1/2 uses a little nudity but it's nothing serious and it's humorusly done. Which is about what could be expected all things considering. I'm not going to stop reading it because of that. Nor am I not going to read Psychic Academy (funny! Though the fanservice is bordering on and sometimes crosses over into the too much) or Plannet Ladder.

Trust me, this is not a flame of anykind and definately not intended as such. I'm just curious. And curious about the whole "Christians aren't supposed to like anime" thing that I'd never heard before. A friend of mine who goes here told me about how some think that and it (like the quiz) just blows my mind.

I don't care about Explicite Language, as long as the main Christian guys/girls aren't throwing the F word around.

He's around, but I'm not sure if he voted. Actually, I believe someone previously stated in this thread that they would like to see a Christian take on horror. Myself, I don't really care about the horror genre in any way.

Heart of Sword's Rhapsody

Money, get away
Get a good job with good pay and you're okay
And all and all you're just another brick in the wall
Shoutin’ in the street gonna take on the world some day
But Bismallah will not let me go
Because I'll see you on the dark side of the moon

Tommy used to work on the docks
Union's been on strike
Bright eyes burning like fire
And exposing every weakness
However carefully hidden by the kids

Who will love a little Sparrow
Who's traveled far and cries for rest
Spare him his life from this monstrosity

I've seen a million faces and I've rocked them all
And if the band youre in starts playing different tunes
We will we will rock you
We will we will rock you!

[Pink Floyd fan listening to Queen and hugging trees which is also known as taking care of God's creation with a pair of headphones on listening to Nightwish as loud as possible while writing a novel on a computer in the middle of a field filled with Wolves.]
