Nicaragua was settled as a colony of Spain in the 1520s, and gained its independence in 1821. And they speak spanish.

8.3% speak English/Creole
4.7% speak Amerindian
and 0.3% speak Chinese or other Languages. Only 66% of the population are literate.

Originally, Nicaragua was to be the sight of the canal that now goes through Panama. While trying to decide on which site to use, a volcano errupted along the path the canal was to take in Nicaragua. Panma canal supporters (President Teddy Roosevelt among them) used this to get support for the Panama site.
