How come...

...no one ever uses the chat on here?

...because no one ever uses the chat here.

Catch 22. I really don't know what can be done about it.

One reason is that some people are for some reason intimidated by its MUD style. Beyond that, I am not sure why (though cbwing0 presents what is probably the true reason). I have made attempts to wait for other people, but never actually been online at the same time as anyone else.

As long as you have AIM, MSN Messenger, YIM, or (now) Skype, the CAA chat program is superfluous. There is usually a CAA chat room up on AIM in the evenings, and many people use the other programs. Skype is a voice chat program that may or may not catch on, although I hope that it will.

For more information on that, see the following thread:

I tried to use it once and asked someone else to go in as well. I couldn't see him and I don't think he could see me.

Well, if there's a general consensus that it's superfluous, I'll shut it down. I do have other things to do with that server.

I am rather disappointed that given the work that went into its testing and development, I received very little commentary on it from people here (let alone constructive suggestions for improvement that could be implemented other than 'it sucks').

Well, it wouldn't be superfluous if it completely took the jump toward MUD and had monsters and exp. Of course, I realize that would be a huge workload on you and a rather poor use of a server, but I like the concept of a CAA rpg.

For the record, I have tried to use it or provide as much commentary as I can. But I'm fine with it the way it is.

CAA has its own chat room? Here? I had no idea.

I guess I don’t do much exploring…

I remember that one fateful day when Coach took me aside. I knew what was coming. "You don't have to tell me," I said. "I'm off the team, aren't I?" "Well," said Coach, "you never were really ON the team. You made that uniform you're wearing out of rags and towels, and your helmet is a toy space helmet. You show up at practice and then either steal the ball and make us chase you to get it back, or you try to tackle people at inappropriate times." It was all true what he was saying. And yet, I thought something is brewing inside the head of this Coach. He sees something in me, some kind of raw talent that he can mold. But that's when I felt the handcuffs go on.

If you wish to do less exploring:

1) Be on the home page (easily accessable by the "home" option in the top bar)
2) Click the "Chat" link in the Quick Links box

I'd join you in it, but this computer doesn't have the proper technology to run it and installing such would make the school administration unhappy.

I had never seen it, so I got a name and all that. But I don't really know how to use it. Could someone give me a tutorial or something?

Thanks UC. It didn’t take me long to find it, but I couldn’t get on. Most likely because I am on my computer at work (as explained in the help section re:firewalls) and I do not think asking my system administrator to make the necessary changes so I can chat with friends, would go over well…

Oh-well.

Maybe some other time.

I was just in there...cool! Reminds me of my days in primary school playing the L-Game.

Would love to meet people in ther. I think it's just a lack of awarenes. Perhaps you should arrange a CAA event to get people in there, and make them aware. Maybe then they'll return more regularly.

Alright. I was in the 'fireside room' and someone named Galant was there. I tried 'say', 'whisper', 'yell', 'emote', etc., but got no response. Was Galant ignoring me or is it possible that my comp isn't working this end right?

As to a CAA MUD like Achaea or something...that would be wonderful.

That would've been me, but I don't recall seeing anyone, but then the layout was new to me and I might have missed it. Want to try again?

For XP and 2000 users, here's how to connect to the Chat via Telnet.
Anything in quotes, type it in, and press ENTER. Don't type the quotes.

Start > Run
"telnet"

You'll get a new window up. At the prompt,
"set crlf" (press ENTER)
"set localecho" (press ENTER)
(EDIT! For Windows 2000, type "set local_echo" (that's local-UNDERSCORE-echo))

Finally,
"open mud.floodgap.com 6785" (press ENTER)

Follow the prompts to create a character. Use whatever name you like.

I have two reasons from being absent in it.
1) AIM/MSN is easier
2) The CAA chat room won't let me in.... I'm a liability.

Jah, Jah, I'll go and copy the error message I get whenever I click on it.

Okay, here it is:
Your browser seems to have no Java support, or you turned it off. Please read the troubleshooting page.

And, I know that's not true. Java is supported, and on.

Be more specific about the web browser, operating system ...

Also, I'm pushing people to try Telnet instead. It's faster and works on many systems.

Sure. If I see you there again, I'll be glad to talk to ya! (I can't really arrange a schedule because I never know if I'll be able to get online...)
