Anime DVD Suggestions

Postby Towi Wakka » Mon Sep 13, 2004 12:32 pm

I have seen a lot of anime, but I actually own very little of it. Can anyone suggest what DVDs I should buy? There really isn't a specific style I like. I just want it to be appropriate. :) I am waiting to find the boxset for Gundam Seed, but I have only seen the import on e-bay.

If you have a lot of money, I'd recommend the Rurouni Kenshin series. I believe they have a couple of boxed sets. Plus, that kind of stuff can be watched over and over.

You're eighteen. Define "appropriate." No one on this site is going to recommend a hentai title, so I don't think you need to worry about that. But I need to know what you define appropriate.

For example, on another thread I suggested Ai Yori Aoshi, and the person said it was a little too mature for them. Granted the person was 15 (I didn't know that), but everyone has certain things they don't want to be exposed to.

By the way Tails is the man. Er...fox.

Well, if you're going to buy anime, presumably you will want to re-watch it and share it with friends.

Titles I've found that go over well with some Christian friends I have include Cowboy Bebop and Azumanga Daioh. Both of those series are reasonably short (6 DVDs for both, although AD is still coming out). A nice 4-DVD set is Haibane Renmei, and I'm helping another person develop a study guide for a Christian exposition of it (called Faith in Films). Still another 4-DVD set that seems to be popular is Kino no Tabi (Kino's Journeys), not one of my favorites but appears to be fairly highly regarded.

So, those are some reasonably short series that go down well with others (especially Christians) and have good replay value -- something I look for when buying anime.

Well like kaem said you should tell us what you want in your animes so we can give you better suggestions. Also I'd avoid buying anime on ebay unless you're experienced in looking for it, because alot of the anime on it is bootlegs.

You must have Rurouni Kenshin in your collection, period.

Other good titles within a reasonable budget would be:

AD Police TV (Clean, entertaining, and you can't go wrong for $20 for all 12 episodes; just don't get the TV series confused with the AD Police OVA, which, based on what I've read about it, is definately NOT clean)

Generator Gawl

Cowboy Bebop

Gundam Wing

Essentially, just stick with the 'classics' and you'll be fine.

Another thing: I HIGHLY recommend avoiding eBay when buying anime, as at least 90% of the anime sold on eBay is bootlegged.

Try http://www.dvdpricesearch.com when attempting to buy anime online.

http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com is my personal favorite store to shop online for anime.

you can find the Gundam Seed box set on Amazon.com (well, the box w/first disc + OST, anyway; the box w/all the discs isn't for sale yet).

I recommend Cowboy Bebop, too. It's a good show.

Noir is another excellent show (in the film noir style); look for the review on this site.

Yeah, I know I will definitly get Kenshin sometime. Its just a matter of money. :) I have seen very little Cowboy Beebop, so it is good to know that I should consider it. As for Azumanga Daioh, I have read a few Manga and it looks funny, but I'm not sure if it would interest me. Is it as girly as it seems? ;)

I don't think it is "girly" -- not like Sailor Moon or say Boys Over Flowers -- though the main characters are girls. It's humorous, sort of an anime version of Seinfeld if you will. Not really very deep at all, but good for a change of pace.

I highly, highly, recommend .hack//sign. The graphics and sound-track are wonderful!

There really is no objectional conflict. There is a review on the review section of CAA if you want to know more.
