"Akira" mentioned in "Heart of the City"

I don't know who akira is -- could someone clear that up?

Anyway, I was pretty sure I'd heard the name used as having to do with a manga or something on this site, so the word caught my eye when I was reading yesterday's comics in the newspaper! In the strip "Heart of the City", it shows Dean holding a comic book (or in the case, manga  ) titled "AKIRA".

You can hardly see it in this pic, but in the first frame you can almost make out the letters on the manga Dean's holding ;)

I thought Akira was a character in the online comic "Path of a Fallen Angel".

Is that all? Funny that HotC would mention it if it was only in PoaFa. Is it really THAT popular?

More than likely it's the Manga of the Anime movie Akira... there is a review thread around here somewhere of the movie, I think.

The movie had an R rating, and it earned it as I remember, but the review can give you more info.

I know I've seen large-format books of Akira in the bookstores, but I never looked at it.

Yeah, I assume it's the manga based on the Akria anime (and yes, it does have an R rating). Akria mangas are complete graphic novels and pretty thick.

The manga is more graphic than the anime, believe it or not, plus the american translators fudged on the dialogue a lot... It's the "f" word every few panels... And, it's like 2000-3000 pages in total, I think...

Oh, wait, there is an "anime manga" on akira? I don't like when they do that... I dont' see the point...

i read the entire manga series of akira, well it was okay. I mean i enjoyed it, some parts were a bit profane, like the cussing. The violence wasn't too much for me to be honest. Haven't seen the movie though

This thread is over nine months old. May I ask why you dug it up out of the archives?

What always makes me wonder is... how do people find threads like this if they werent looking for through old threads in the first place?

It kinda freaked me out when I saw my name under the title of this thread... I'd totally forgotten about it!
