Board Gamers Out There?

CAA has a site for Computer Gamers, but...

I'm an avid Boardgamer. You remember, you get out the board, put the pieces on it, play other living human beings.... you do remember, don't you?

Anyways, the type of games I play are sometimes called "Euros" or "German Games", although they aren't always made in Europe. Here are a few examples, let me know if you've heard of these:

Settlers of Catan
Carcassonne
Euphrat & Tigris
Puerto Rico
Lost Cities
San Juan
Rail Baron

..and so on. Check out boardgamegeek if you'd like to see a database of almost every boardgame ever published.

I don't play much Monopoly, Scrabble, Clue, or other "mainstream" games (nor do we do so in the clubs I play in), usually because the level of strategy in the Euro games is so much higher. (Or else because we don't memorize all those obscure words that are perfect for the triple-word score!)

I do play Go, though I'm kind of rusty, and probably would rate at around 18 kyu right now.

I also play wargames (games that simulate combat to one degree or another), but much less often than I used to because of time considerations.

So... just an invitation for people who've played boardgames to throw around some opinions on new titles (for example, did "Ticket to Ride" really deserve the 'Game of the Year' (Spiele de Jahre) award?) or just talk about the Good Old Days (remember when you could still play Civilization for 17 hours straight?).

One of my favorite games is Sorry. "Kid's game," you say? Oh contrair moefer. (I don't speak or write French). It has tons of strategy, especially when a bunch of cut-throat people play it. Great fun.

But, my favorite game is the king of all board games, Axis and Allies. I love the new edition that just came out a month or so ago.

I recently played Axis and Allies: D-Day. Nice use of the A&A system, though I was frustrated by the interdiction rules (I was the German player). I really like A&A: Pacific as well.

When i was younger i used to like Chess, Risk, Stratiego, and with certain people i can play monopoly. I recently learned to play Parchiesie(spelling?) from the description above its much like sorry,when people are playing to win, all kinds of things can happen. It was great fun.

I haven't played the other A&A's, but I'm interested. The new edition rules incorperated some of the rules from the others - like Destroyers and artillery, and I like the new pieces!

I've never played parcheesi (sp courtesy of my spell checker), but it sounds very interesting. I'll have to con someone into playing with me.

My siblings and I used to play Monopoly and Parcheesi. I'm a bit tired of those games though.

Our friends play the game Taboo a lot. It's realy fun.

That's a subject of pretty intense perennial debate. The answer is that, while interest in board games is definitely lower than it was, say, 30 years ago, it is not in any danger of dying out, and is still more popular worldwide than certain sports (like, curling or lawn darts...).

However, the advent of PC and PS-2/X-box/Nintendo and the like has displaced a lot of "analog" interest. Board games will likely never reach that level of popularity again unless oil prices go to $200 a barrel and electricity becomes scarce. One can always hope....

Settlers of Catan now that is a fun game i play board game fairly offten when i can get plp to play with me. i also play hero clixs now that is fun statagy game.

That's the most daunting aspect of board games today, I think.

I did find a pigeon, er, a friend to play Axis and Allies with me tonight, though.

And the reason that many boardgames are now making the jump to the cyber world. Lots of sites are popping up where you can play - interactively, real-time or delayed turns - board games. I've played Euphrat & Tigris, Settlers of Catan, and Web of Power online recently.

I've read the manga, and although I haven't finished the anime series, Azumanga Daioh is quickly working its way into my heart... and though I like Kamineko, I'm probably more like Osaka in person....

There's just something about having you opponnent sitting acros from you and roling the dice and moving the peices. It's a good feeling.

I got to play Axis&Allies last night with a friend. The game went long and we couldn't finish, but still, I had a lot of fun.


Azumanga Daioh is quickly working its way into my heart as well.

I don't get to play board games too much, but me and my Mom try to play a game or two when we can (she got me a game that was made for my home town of Allentown called the "All About Allentown Game.") I plan on getting Settler's, however the $40 pricetag is holding me back a bit.

I've been playing a colletable figure game called HeroClix with friends of mine from EB Games.... the game is basically a variation of the old war-figure games, but they've simplified the game by putting the tables and charts into a dial in the base of the characters. Often much trash-talking goes on, and it's quite fun.... it's often as much getting the others to do something dumb by goading them into it.

It's sad that boardgames aren't as popular today, and I'm almost surprised, esp. with technology today that more boardgames aren't being converted to online versions that can be played against other people via the interent or even computer AI people for some practice.

The Clix "revolution", although not quite making inroads like Warhammer 40K did several years ago, is still moving along. I don't play HeroClix, but I do play SportsClix (Major League Baseball -- go Ichiro!) as well as Mechwarrior. Lots of fun, and more smack talking than you can shake a measuring tape at.

Actually, you can play Settlers of Catan online -- I used to, but don't much right now, and no longer have the site bookmarked -- but on boardgamegeek you can both play some games online (Euphrat & Tigris, Auf Heller und Pfenning) as well as find links to other games online (just look up the game, and go down its page until you find "Related Links".

Anyhow, I like Risk if I've got a LOT of time to waste... That game is fun once you get into it. It's not quite the same, but I would also like D&D provided I had a good DM.
