Acupuncture

Postby Aka-chan » Fri Aug 06, 2004 7:50 pm

I was visiting my uncle, who is a doctor and also knows acupuncture, and got to try it out (I love needles.) I found out that there's more to its effectiveness than just ideas of flows of chi and whatnot and that certain points affect the brain's reactions in parts of the body. I thought it was really neat, and it seemed to work pretty well for my cough. Has anyone else tried it?

you had acupuncture for a COUGH??? :wow!:

Supposing you started coughing uncontrollably when the guy was putting those needles near your eye! :forehead:

x_0 Owies. That would be bad, but he's done this for a long time. Besides, it wasn't a bad cough (I actually got the treatment just because I wanted to see what it was like -- and for the needles -- more than because I needed it) and the needles went in just below the collarbone and above the lobes of the ears (which really surprise me; who knew a point in your ears affected your lungs??).

It sounds cool. It would make a cool fighting style for an anime. Using well-thrown darts or spiked fingers to hit specific points, disabling your opponent with minimal force...cool...

Needles. *passes out.*
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

I took an alternative medicine course as a medical student where we attended, and had performed on us, acupunture and acupressure. I really don't know what to say about acupuncture as a method of general medicine, although I will say that as alternative methods of pain control, there are many people I have encountered who have had great benefit from them.

Acupressure, btw, hurts. *shudders* But it felt soooo good when he finished!

Eh...I had to get a flu shot last December and was cowering in the corner, screaming "LORD JESUS CHRIST, please my God, please HAVE MERCY on me! Please Lord, please Lord, don't let them do this to meeeeeee!"

I got hauled out of the corner and got the shot. And guess what? It didn't hurt!

No way would I ever get acupuncture.

Two of my uncles used to have regular acupuncture sessions and one of them accidentally once forgot that he still had a needle on him when he got home. And I do rub the pressure points between my thumb and my index finger when my stomach starts acting up. It does stave off the pain for a while, but I'll eventually have to go to the bathroom afterwards.

The acupunture needles don't really hurt much if they're inserted properly. I had two connected to my leg, and then an electronic stimulator attached to that. It was more of a deep ache sensation -- the needles don't really bother you.

There are also small "thumbtacks" that can be used for pressure point stimulation in places like the ear. I was so fatigued once that I tried one on my earlobe, supposedly for energy (this was after being up all night on call). It worked, although I can't say whether it was because it hurt or because it was actually doing something, but it DID work! ^^

Nevertheless, as an MD, I'm still hesitant to advocate acupuncture/pressure as a universal cure. That being said, I do think it has definite applications, and for someone where conventional therapy has failed, why not?

Getting back on topic (ahem),

> I never really understood the principle behind it.

Neither do I ;) but as best as I was told, the idea is that there are energy points and channels in the body, and the pins are placed in these points and channels to redirect and funnel the body's energy towards healing processes.

Something like that, I think. It feels really weird, though; it hurts only a little when they put the needle in, and by the time the pain has actually registered it's gone. It feels even weirder afterwards, though, because you know the needle's in you, but you can't really feel it.

Depends on what you're after and the technique of the operator, but not more than half an inch or so.

I believe that touching (or putting a needle into) one part of the body can affect another part entirely. Sometimes, for example, I feel a twinge in my back if my arm gets poked or pinched. It's happened too often to be a coincidence, in my mind. I'd probably try acupressure or acupuncture... not as a first resort, but I would try it.
