I don't like singing. I can't sing well. I don't want to get up infront of alot of people and sing. How can I tell her no, though, without hurting her feelings?

Talk. Beg for mercy.

It's either that, or during your first concert, throw up all over the place.

No, I'm sure if you sat down, and talked it through with your mum, she'll understand. Or do what my sister does all the time; make a list of pros and cons of doing it. Sounds stupid, but it really helps sometimes.

lol. You guys just aren't right in the head.

How about telling her how you feel. And don't be screaming or angry when you do it. Maybe she has a good reason for wanting you to join (maybe she's nervous and thinks your presence will help her out). If you listen to her side and calmly explain your side, your answer should become clearer.

If you end up doing it, even if it is just for your mother's sake, you may be surprised. You may get something out of it yourself.

Funny, here's my children's sermon for tomorrow morning:

Scripture: Speak to one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Ephesians 5:19-20 (NIV)

I think that one of the greatest gifts that God has given us is the gift of music. Have you ever heard of a composer by the name of Johann Sebastian Bach? Bach lived about 250 years ago and he is considered by many people to be one of the greatest composers who ever lived. You might be surprised to learn that some of Bach's music is still in our hymnals today.

Whenever Bach wrote a piece of music, he always wrote the letters S.D.G. at the bottom of the music. Those letters stand for the words Soli Deo Gloria which means "To God alone be the glory." You see, Bach realized that his music was a gift from God and that he had a responsibility to use his gift to the glory of God.

Music is a very important part of our worship. The Bible says, "Speak to one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your hearts to the Lord."

Some people come to worship, but they never sing. They have a lot of excuses for not singing. Here are some of the excuses I have heard over the years.

"I can't carry a tune in a bucket." Sorry, but that excuse won't hold water. The Bible doesn't say, "Sing to the Lord with a beautiful voice." It says, "Make a joyful noise unto the Lord."

Another excuse I hear is, "I don't like the songs we sing." That excuse won't work either. Why? Because the songs aren't for us, they are for God. Since God created the gift of music, I think He probably likes all kinds of music!

Here's an excuse I've heard many times. "I don't know that song." The Bible says, "Sing unto the Lord a new song." How can we sing a new song to the Lord, if we won't even try to learn it?

Do you know what I think? I think it is time for us to stop making excuses and use whatever musical gift God has given us to glorify Him. Soli Deo Gloria! To God alone be the glory!

So, don't do it because your mom wants you to, do it because you want to glorify God. Just ask to be on the back row... :thumb:

We don't have a back row. Our church has an enrollment of 42...about to be 44, and most of them don't show.

In general I would have to agree with rev. doc. It isn't the congregation or whoever you'll be singing to ... you've got an audiance of one and He doesn't really care if you forget all the words and start humming row row row your boat out of tune, He just wants you to glorify Him. If you really don't want to do it I would suggest praying about it though. Even if it doesn't get you out of singing it might get you to a place where you can do it for God. (besides the more you sing the better you'll get ;))

Yes, I think Rev. Doc summed it up nicely. You're not in church to entertain man, you're there to praise God. If it's entertainment people want they should stay home and watch television.

As a former youth choir member, it's funny how I use to not like to sing when I sat in the audience. It was probably because I was worried what the person next to me would think of my singing (when I sing low I tend to get off tune). But now, I sing all the time because I realized it's not how you're singing but what you're singing and who you're singing to. And it helps me to think about what the songs really mean to me when I sing them.

Do you have any other musical talents such as playing the piano or a guitar? There are other ways to make a joyful noise to the Lord. Do you have a church band? Maybe you could play an instrument instead if your mom really wants you to be involved in the service. Whatever you decide talk about it.
