Japanese Pen Pal?

I've been strongly considering a Japanese pen pal online, but, I'm curious on how safe it would be. After all, you really don't know if those you are talking to on the internet are actually legit. Now, while I am perfectly capable of handling myself, I like to be cautious anyways.

Opinions?

Well, I think about a year ago I decided to be pen-pals with Saki, my Japanese penpal/friend. ^-^ I discovered her on a website that was specially for Japanese people who wanted penpals. The people also had a choice whether they wanted to be "swappers" (which exachange only by email) and penpals(by real mail.). Sadly when my computer blew up I lost that file, I had it in my favourites. Maybe I could go look for it?

What I did was I first talked to my correspondence by email for awhile. I simple talked to her about interests and such? So I suggest you do that too. You are safe any way because you wantto swappers only right? So you don't even have to exchange addresses or things! Just get to know about the person first right~ ^-^

I would like to have a penpal from another country too. But I share the same concerns. What is this website you speak of RoyalWing?

Visit a local college and meet some of the students that are from Japan. Then become penpals with one of them, that way you have a face attached to the person.

Now, my only problem is how to keep in contact with all the friends I have made.

ive had 2 japanese penpals but just last month and 3 months ago they both went to a university and i havent heard from them since and i found a different website with a bunch of people that want to be pen pals online from japan but i dont remember it off the top of my head if you want it just ask and ill find it

I'm sorry, I guess maybe the boys there do not like to write letters? (_ _) Actually, I have never met a boy that like to write letters! But I don't know that many boys?

Hmm...I don't remember meeting any Japanese students at my campus. Then again, I don't go to any of the multicultural type meetings :sweat:

I should try that this year.

Best way is to contact the arts and sciences department, and let them know you are interested in foreign studies. Not necessarily studying it, but helping with it. Even if you aren't aiming for a major or something in that area, the experience dealing with other countries people is extremely helpful for ones people skills.

Most colleges have exchange students even if they don't have the language programs in place for the area they are from.

I'm truly uncertain as to whether I want to pursue this or not. On one hand it would be somewhat nice to discourse with a person from Japan or of Japanese nationality. On the other, based upon what I read on the site, chances are we would have very little in common. There is always the cumbersome aspect of time, as well. But we will see.

The one thing I have found is that it is really hard to find something to talk about with the japanese exchange students I am helping with, well for me anyway. They just aren't interested in talking about anime for some reason.

So, I have had to branch out to talking about different things. It is quite fun though.
