They seem to do the show switching around often. . it's kinda sad for those who haven't seen the series, but not so much for those who have.

Bah I wish they would of kept it on so I could of actually got into it. Were they not getting good ratings with it or something? I mean they've had Bebop on forever and taken it off a few times only to have it come back by popular demand.

I haven't seen it but it has looked interesting to me.

From what I've understood, the box set is coming out later this year.

Hum,

What can I say, I don't trust it. Why, well, recently I've taken a few courses in the occult, witchcraft, studying the enemy so to speak. And when I saw the opening credits as well as the ending credits and all the symbolism a lot of little red flags went up everywhere, not just educationally but it was a gut feeling as well. And I've learned to trust my instincts.

Also, when it comes to the subject of witchcraft, I'm always very very very weary. And there was just too many questionable things.

As for the original opening to the series, it's actually a mimic of an already existing music video, it's called "Take A Bow" by Madonna (yes, Maddona believe it or not), I'll post a link so you guys can see for yourselves.

then there is the end credits, and the little medallion that twirls around. I have to double check, but it's a cleverly designed upsidown cross. I was somewhat impressed with it's sutilty, but yeah, theres a fun fact for you.

Anyways, all I suggest is that people do their homework before they go rushing to buy anything. I'll post more once I've done some more research.

God Bless

First of all before I look at what you said, I am going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that you were just typing fast and know how to spell. I do misspell sometimes too. . :) That said.. .

A few courses, does that mean self-study, entrance into them, or actual courses at a school? Curiosity mostly, what kind has no bearing on what you say or what I say. . . Simply having courses makes you look for it more often. I like to study the threat the occult poses too, and am well aware how paranoid/attuned it can make one.

There are three things I constantly pray for. The one that has bearing here is for an immediate reaction to occult powers. I have had a reaction thus far to only two things. Tarot cards (evil, duh...), and the 5th hp book(no comments please.). This reaction manifests in a sharp chill down my spine. I actually dropped the tarot cards/book when I picked them up because of that shiver. WHR has not given me any reaction, nor gut feelings. Sorry.
Archan wrote:Also, when it comes to the subject of witchcraft, I'm always very very very weary. And there was just too many questionable things.
Yes, I am wary of the occult, but this lacks a lot of the key elements.
There are no demons really in this, and the witches turn out to be the DNA superiors. Kinda-like a witch version of X-men.
Archan wrote:As for the original opening to the series, it's actually a mimic of an already existing music video, it's called "Take A Bow" by Madonna (yes, Madonna believe it or not), I'll post a link so you guys can see for yourselves.
Could you clearly state what you are trying to tell me. I got confused. . I understand Madonna is definitely one to pity/shy away from, but the mimicry? I, personally, like the opening vid because I knew it to be a clean version of Madonnas. . . so the mimicry didn't bother me..

Archan wrote:then there is the end credits, and the little medallion that twirls around. I have to double check, but it's a cleverly designed upsidown cross. I was somewhat impressed with it's sutilty, but yeah, theres a fun fact for you.
That or a claw. . . . (subtle either way.. . . ) You know that if you look for it you will find it, right? I had a friend tell me a while back that about every other sentence can be interpreted to mean something crass(he actually used a different term, but it would be R-rated at least.). Yeesh, that was not a thought I wanted. It's true, but does that mean that the phrase is really something crass? nope rather your interpretation is. .

Archan wrote:Anyways, all I suggest is that people do their homework before they go rushing to buy anything. I'll post more once I've done some more research.
umm, trust me I do a lot of research. I can't really see this one to anywhere near as much of a threat as Harry Potter might be.
No!!! Don't anybody start argueing about HP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, I understand your reason for worries as the devil definitely wants to catch us off guard, but on the other hand the occult can only have power over us if we are apart of it, or out of grace. When out of grace we can be targeted more and more blatantly.

umm. . . hopefully I didn't tick you off by picking apart what you wrote. . . sorry.

I for one completely agree with you and understand what you mean about this series. I've posted about this before so I won't rehash it all, but when people say, "oh it's fine it's just about mutants with different DNA" I have to cringe because I myself got WAY more occult vibes than scientific DNA vibes from this show. Well Archan, thanks for the warning, but as you can see, we're in the minority on this one. ;)

A warning has been issued regarding the series. Please do not argue on the subject, as awsam007 has suggested. I would, however, be interested in viewing a link to his thoughts formerly posted on the subject.

Also, kindly avoid the topic of Harry Potter in this thread. I cannot see how it would help the discussion. I would, however, formally ask that Xavier249 PM me his thoughts on Harry Potter.

Hey, replies....

Xavier249:

Nice ta meet you! ^^ I'd just thought I'd formerly introduce myself before anything else, you know, just to be proper :thumb:

Anywhos thanks for giving me the benefit of the doubt with the typing thing, I do type really fast and am usually being rushed so i don't normally have time to check for spelling errors, even so I'm sure you'll still find some in this post huh?

As for my own research into the occult, it's both self-study and courses at college, in fact I'm currently taking a Magic and Ritual class as we speak, now there's something that would make for an interesting thread. It might just end up being closed later on though so I might not even go through the effort, oh, but, anyways.....

Sensitivity to the...(sprit world shall we?) varies greatly from person to
person, however I'm in no way trying to single out anyone, but being a verteran here (Think I'm going on 4 years roughly...I'll have to ask Ash to check on that for a fun fact) many new members come and join whom are MUCH more sensitive then alot of other people (me included) to violence, suggestive sexual material, and witchcraft, and are confused sometimes when questionable anime dealing with this subject matter is seemingly fully supported here at the forums but uneasy with them. So i just like to question the questionable so to speak.

But then again, I don't speak for anyone else either, nor do I claim to, so I'll just stick to....."I don't trust it." That is enough for me personally.

As for the Madonna thing (LAUGHS), I just thought it was something to point out being this thread is on Anything WHR right?
Although, even from the stills, Robins rather suggestive gestures and such are still something to note.

As for the medallion, I've searched everywhere for images of it, but can't find any online irronically, I wonder why.......... (for those of you wondering, yes I'm writing crypticlly on purpose, call it boredom if you want a motive  )

As for the occult in general, well, there are many things spiritually (on both sides) which still remain a great mystery to us. The Bible tells us who is on who's side, and gives us the tools to fight an ongoing war in with an unseen enemy. But just because we aren't consciously attributing to one side, doesn't mean we aren't unconsciously. Yes, I believe spirutual influence (from either side) is that strong, I've witnessed it first hand. But I don't want this thread to swade from anime to personal testimony, but I hope you understand somewhat why I'm ALWAY on guard when it comes to subject matter dealing with dark spirits and witchcraft straight forwardly.

Tick me off? (Laughs)You a good guy, and I actually commend you for picking apart my post, I do it all the time. I'm surprised more people don't do it, I find it kind of healthy when it comes to controversial subjects. I hope we can do it again some time, and thanks for you intellectual response, it means alot :)

Awsam007:

*Laughs* I LUV being the minority, guess I'm just weird huh? But anyways, from what I'm reading a WARNING has been posted on the anime, so I guess our efforts weren't all in vain huh? :thumb:

UC:

Hey! Are you back from WACCO already? Wow, time flies by really fast. I'll ask you about your trip on another thread though.

Hum, so are you saying the thread is closed? If so I'm sorry about posting full heartedly, and I wasn't trying to provoke anything being I'm slowly learning of the forums new guidelines. Eh, what can I say? Sorry again? :hits_self

The thread will remain open for discussion of the anime in question.

Regarding questions about my trip: view the General forum and find a thread created by me. The most recent one will include a brief overview of all that took place in Waco.

Yeah, there are some, but I am also one who messes words up occasionally too. My perfectionist side of me can't stand misspellings though. hmm . . need to practice more temperance.

Wow! All of mine is self srudy, but you have to understand I am approaching this from a catholic perspective. I really like to study stuff related to "speculative theology" in relation to demons and angels, and also the works of Gabriel Amorth the current head excorcist of Rome, who is on the head of the spiritual front.

One question, is it a christian college where you are taking magic and ritual?

Makes sense. :) Lets see, what are your specs then? I am rather tolerant of violence, but nudity of anysort is a real turnoff when choosing animes. Also, the more creepy/ the more an anime makes me think the more I like it. I think that is how I currently am.

Archan wrote:But then again, I don't speak for anyone else either, nor do I claim to, so I'll just stick to....."I don't trust it." That is enough for me personally.

I agree with you completely. Although for me to not want to see an anime it practically has to have yuri or yaoi attached otherwise I seem to not care. . . (Saw, X/1999, EVA, Vampire hunter D etc....)
Yeah I think I need to work on that a little.

It has still frames from the DVDs, opening and endings too. :)

Let me just say, that I think spiritual forces do have sway also. I request my guardian angels help, quite often. Good book is the "Screwtape letters" by C. S. Lewis. :)

If you wish to discuss personal matters further, perhaps a PM would be the best route to pursue the conversation. I would like to see this discussion be finished, but this may be the incorrect means of doing so.

WACCO was an extremely version of Waco, ie a medium sized city in Texas. I went there for a mission trip.

You should feel no need to hurry with the PM.

I visited the site before and could have sworn there wasn't a gallery. And I guess thats it for the moment on anything strictly WHR. When I find more though I'll post it, just give me enough time and I'll decypher all of Robins little cryptic messages, MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

Angel Sanctuary
Bible Black
Gravitation
FAKE
Yami No Matsuei

You misunderstand. This discussion (not thread) is being closed because it has no more place here (particularly in a fan thread) and is a private discussion, not because it is on the do-not-discuss list. Were the latter so, this would have already been closed long ago.

Okay! Umm. . how do we continue it then. . . I Pm every so often, but prefer more people to be able to read what I am saying. . . . .

Oh well.

I'll avoid argueing apples and oranges too much, but the pendant's thing looks more like a claw. If you look at shot #6 on the site, you can see that it's side things bend downward. BTW: glad you found the dvd screenshots, and it is "subtle.. . " The side things bending down removes a little of its cross like looks because. . . well you know what the crossbeam looks like on a cross. ok.. .even if it were a cross, I would still think it was cool .

Cryptic messages? Umm. . . needless to say I suppose, but if you seek you will find. The one who looks at the world in rose-colored glasses sees the world in pink, not blue.
On the other hand, I would agree that there are some blatant messages like the one that witchcraft is just misunderstood, but we know better anyway. Witchcraft is a "gift" from satan. AKU!! EVIL!!

Just to add to the weird commentary before saying something else about WHR. I have seen the first 4 on that list of non-discussable. . . umm yeah just a weird fact.

I really liked Robin's fire attacks. They seemed to me to be like a streak of flame each time. . . . um m yeah I am not feeling creative right now, sorry. Although the detail about it messing up her eyesight was kind of odd. I mean witches powers are supposed to be enhancing, so why would they weaken something . . but I guess the obvious answer is a drain on power. Eyesight being a power.

Mostly lurker here, I've posted just a few times, but since WHR is one of my favorite animes, and one I know better then some others, I wanted to add a few things to the discussion.

First, on Robin's pendant. I have the first soundtrack CD, which on the back shows a closeup of the pendant. I don't know how this would be considered an upside-down cross. From the front it appears as a cross about equal-distance top and bottom, with thet sides slightly curved at the outer edges. The sides then curve across across the back to hold the stone in place. Above the cross there is a piece to hold the pendant on the rope/ribbon or whatever it's on. This piece is wider then the cross itself. I wish I had access to a screen shot; but I don't. Maybe I can scan it if someone's interested. When the pendant twirls in the end sequence, you can see how it wraps around the back. I don't know if there's any symbolism in the curved edges of the horizontal part of the cross, but I did want to address this "upside down cross" claim.

Secondly, from a Christian perspective IMO the most problematic part of the series is the inclusion of runes. Runes, for those who don't know, are ancient alphabets. Some new-agers and pagans use rune readings today as a means of divination.

Individually, and in combination, runes tended to symbolize concepts. This is different then our own contemporary alphabet, where individual letters are generally just phonetic symbols.

In WHR, some witches use the runes, apparently as a means of focusing power or blocking somene's power. In the world of the series, they do apparently have some kind of magic power (you might be able to consider this "mechanical magic" however, since the power is tied in with the meaning of the rune letter). I'll add that not all witches in the series use runes, however.

As far as whether or not the witches are "mutants" or not...the series clearly returns again and again to it being passed through family lines. It appears to be a recessive gene or (combination of recessive genes)...not every child of a "witch" is one themselves. SOLOMON keeps a database of witches and their relatives, in order to check possible new witches against it. It's implied that Amon's father was a witch, and explicitedly stated that his mom was one and Amon is a seed himself (those who have the potential but not yet manifested powers) ...but his half brother Naigara is not a witch or a seed, having apparently a "normal" human for a mother.

There are, of course, different explainations given throughout the series for the origin of witches and what caused their downfall, but it's not that any of them are necessarily the total truth, as surrounded as they are by mythology, and interpreted by the belief system of those who relate the explaination.

As far as a warning about the series....well, any warning is proper, IMO, if there's SOMETHING in a television show, book, or movie that might be spiritually determental to an individual. That doesn't necessarily mean that it will be spiritually deteremental to the majority of mature Christians. I don't think this series would be. But in some cases it might. Such as those who are very susceptible to the lure of paganism-- it's really adding two and two together and making five, though, IMO. If you're already traveling down that path you may interpret WHR as supporting some of your beliefs and worldview...but the same claim can be made, for example, about Lord of the Rings...which also has runes in it, the books at least, although the exact usage of them escapes me at the moment.

Folks...over at Harry's (the WHR discussion board on usuyami no sekai, one of the main WHR fan sites), they've got a very interesting discussion about Robin's pendant.

Now, the conclusion that some of them have come to isn't obvious enough to totally sell me on it...but it does have possibilities that would make some sense in the context of the story. And that is...that Robin's pendant is designed to suggest the Catholic concept of "The Sacred Heart"

Take a look at http://usuyami.vauss.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=447&st=60 and the long post from "wandering spirit" dated July 31, towards the bottom of the page.

Thats an interesting thread, though I think it is more likely that it is a cross than a sacred heart. I am a catholic so I am quite familiar with the sacred heart, and I be more ready to think it is a cross than that... . . okay I've said my piece.
