I heard this one on a radio show, though I'm not sure who originally said it: "Nails didn't keep Christ on the cross, love did."

An excerpt from Tennyson's "Ulysses"

The long day wanes; the slow moon climbs; the deep
Moans round with many voices. Come, my friends.
'T is not too late to seek a newer world.
Push off, and sitting well in order smite
The sounding furrows; for my purpose holds
To sail beyond the sunset, and the baths
Of all the western stars, until I die.
It may be that the gulfs will wash us down;
It may be we shall touch the Happy Isles,
And see the great Achilles, whom we knew.
Tho' much is taken, much abides; and tho'
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are,--
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.
The scientific method," Thomas Henry Huxley once wrote, "is nothing but the normal working of the human mind." That is to say, when the mind is working; that is to say further, when it is engaged in corrrecting its mistakes. Taking this point of view, we may conclude that science is not physics, biology, or chemistry—is not even a "subject"—but a moral imperative drawn from a larger narrative whose purpose is to give perspective, balance, and humility to learning.

Neil Postman

one of my favorite quotes from Ernest Hemmingway,

"They wrote in the old days that it is sweet and fitting to die for ones country, But in modern war, there is nothing sweet nor fitting in your dying, You will die like a dog for no reason".

heres a contradictery quote from the marines,

"pain is weakness leaving the body"

Another saying that I don't know where came from is "What does not kill you make you stronger...." This is a saying I say to myself with my walk with Christ.

"Miniver Cheevy" by Edwin Arlington Robinson

Miniver Cheevy, child of scorn,
Grew lean while he assailed the seasons;
He wept that he was ever born,
And he had reasons.

Miniver loved the days of old
When swords were bright and steeds were prancing;
The vision of a warrior bold
Would set him dancing.

Miniver sighed for what was not,
And dreamed, and rested from his labors;
He dreamed of Thebes and Camelot,
And Priam's neighbors.

Miniver mourned the ripe renown
That made so many a name so fragrant;
He mourned Romance, now on the town,
And Art, a vagrant.

Miniver loved the Medici,
Albeit he had never seen one;
He would have sinned incessantly
Could he have been one.

Miniver cursed the commonplace
And eyed a khaki suit with loathing;
He missed the mediæval grace
Of iron clothing.

Miniver scorned the gold he sought,
But sore annoyed was he without it;
Miniver thought, and thought, and thought,
And thought about it.

Miniver Cheevy, born too late,
Scratched his head and kept on thinking;
Miniver coughed, and called it fate,
And kept on drinking.

Its a nice cautionary tale for me. As it is for any obsession.

You asked for quotes... You'll get a page full! :grin: These are some of my favorites:

"I went into the woods because I wanted to live deliberately. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life. To put to rout all that was not life, and not when I had come to die, discover that I had not lived."
~~ Henry David Thoreau

"Above me I saw, beyond the pale blue sky, bright beams of starlight, fixed and frozen in their empty firmament. The stars shone down, shedding their light upon us by day and night, untouched and uninfluenced by the deeds of men. What are men, after all? Frail creatures, frail as the grass that grows green one day and withers the next, blown away on every wind.
God help us, we are mingled starlight and dust, and we know not who we are. We are lost unless we find ourselves in you, Great Light....
Look you! We are not abandoned, nor do we strive with our own strength alone. Call on your Creator, O Man, cling to him, and he will carry you. Honor him, and he will establish guardian spirits round about you. Though you walk through flood and fire, you will not be harmed; your Redeemer will uphold you. Bright armies of angels go before us, surrounding us on every side if we could but see!"
~~ Pendragon, by Stephen Lawhead

"To be alive to the wonder of the commonplace, I thought, that is the very gift of a wildly generous Creator, who ever invites his creatures to contemplate the exuberance of his excellent handiwork. There is a deep and abiding joy at work in this worlds-realm, and we who toil through our lives do often forget this, or overlook it. But look: it is all around! Ceaseless, unrelenting, certain as sunrise, and constant as the rhythm of a heartbeat."
~~ Pendragon, by Stephen Lawhead

"This, I believe, is the spirit's highest consummation -- holding fast to faith by dint of will alone when the fire of certainty has grown cold. For when the fire-wind of ardor gusts high, even the weakest soul can fly. But when the fire dies and the wind fails, the real test of a soul's worth begins. Those who perservere through all things gain strength and find great favor with God."
~~ Pendragon, by Stephen Lawhead

"Preach the Gospel at all times, and if necessary use words." ~~St. Francis of Assisi

“I, who live by words, am wordless when I try my words in prayer. All language turns to silence…â€
"All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us."

Wow guys these are some very cool stuff. :thumb: Another one I thought of right now is from Outlaw Star. "A boy have the right to dream.... There are endless possiblities in front of him.... What path will you choose?...." *I think thats how it goes. If I am wrong please correct me*

Terminator "Hasta La Vista Baby"
Simpsons "Eat my shorts!!!"
Unknown "Every person deserves a second chance, EVERY PERSON!!!"

Welcome to The Chesterton Quote Centre!

"The importance of fairy tales is not to show that dragons exist, but that dragons can be slain." - GK Chesterton.

And another one:
"Only a dead thing goes with the stream." - GK Chesterton.

"The riddles of God are more satisfying than the solutions of man." -GK Chesterton

Serious Quotes:

"A friend is one to whom one may pour out all the contents of one's heart, chaff and grain together. Knowing that gentle hands will take and sift it, keep what is worth keeping, and with a breath of kindness, blow the rest away." -Dinah Mulock Craik

"Few are those who see with they're own eyes and feel with they're own hearts" -???

Silly Quotes:
"Even though he was an enemy of mine, I had to admit that what he had accomplished was a brilliant piece of strategy. First, he punched me, then he kicked me, then he punched me again." -Jack Handy

"Instead of a Seeing Eye dog, what about a gun? It's cheaper than a dog, plus if you walk around shooting all the time people are going to get out of the way. Cars, too!" -Jack Handy

"later" -kaji
Depend on it. God's work done in God's way will never lack God's supply. He is too wise a God to frustrate His purposes for lack of funds, and He can just as easily supply them ahead of time as afterwards, and He much prefers doing so.
- J. Hudson Taylor
I remember that one fateful day when Coach took me aside. I knew what was coming. "You don't have to tell me," I said. "I'm off the team, aren't I?" "Well," said Coach, "you never were really ON the team. You made that uniform you're wearing out of rags and towels, and your helmet is a toy space helmet. You show up at practice and then either steal the ball and make us chase you to get it back, or you try to tackle people at inappropriate times." It was all true what he was saying. And yet, I thought something is brewing inside the head of this Coach. He sees something in me, some kind of raw talent that he can mold. But that's when I felt the handcuffs go on.

These are some of my favorite Bible verses that have been echoed by secular musicians (Bob Dylan had a visit into Christendom, but has since moved on. His quote comes from that journey)

"Of every Earthly plan that be known to man, He is unconcerned."
--Bob Dylan

"All the nations are as nothing before Him, they are regarded by Him as less than nothing and meaningless."
--Isaiah 40:17

"God only knows. God makes His plans. The information's not available to the mortal man."
--Paul Simon

"The secret things belong to the LORD: but those things which are revealed belong to us and to our children...."
--Deuteronomy 29:29
