Canada Day!

Postby Technomancer » Thu Jul 01, 2004 4:28 am

On July 1st, 1867 the Dominion of Canada achieved its independence from Great Britain.

In days of yore, from Britain's shore
Wolfe, the dauntless hero, came
And planted firm Britania's flag
On Canada's fair domain.
There may it wave, our boast and pride
And join in love together
The thistle, shamrock, rose entwine
The maple leaf forever.

Chorus
The maple leaf, our emblem dear
The maple leaf forever
God save our King and heaven bless
The maple leaf forever.

At Queenston Heights and Lundy's Lane
Our brave fathers side by side
For freedom, homes and loved ones dear
Firmly stood and nobly died
And those dear rights which they maintained
We swear to yield them never
Our watchword ever more shall be
The maple leaf forever.

Our fair Dominion now extends
From Cape Race to Nootka Sound
May peace forever be our lot
And plenteous store abound.
And may those ties of love be ours
Which discord cannot sever
And flourish green o'er freedom's home
The maple leaf forever.
The scientific method," Thomas Henry Huxley once wrote, "is nothing but the normal working of the human mind." That is to say, when the mind is working; that is to say further, when it is engaged in corrrecting its mistakes. Taking this point of view, we may conclude that science is not physics, biology, or chemistry—is not even a "subject"—but a moral imperative drawn from a larger narrative whose purpose is to give perspective, balance, and humility to learning.

Happy 137th, Canada! ^_^ I was supposed to work today, but ended up sick. I'll be "celebrating" at home all day instead.

Go Canada! No school for me! (Or at least...there WOULD be no school if school wasn't over already...)
I'm back to make a post or two every couple years...

Canada is one of my favorite countries. Their model of independance is one that could teach much of the world a great deal. Standing army of 60,000... longest unguarded border in the world... all in all a good place.

So hail to all members of CAA from Canada.

Just a bit more Canadian stuff (Northwest Passage by Stan Rogers)

Chorus
Ah, for just one time I would take the Northwest Passage
To find the hand of Franklin reaching for the Beaufort Sea;
Tracing one warm line through a land so wild and savage
And make a Northwest Passage to the sea.

Westward from the Davis Strait 'tis there 'twas said to lie
The sea route to the Orient for which so many died;
Seeking gold and glory, leaving weathered, broken bones
And a long-forgotten lonely cairn of stones.

Three centuries thereafter, I take passage overland
In the footsteps of brave Kelso, where his "sea of flowers" began
Watching cities rise before me, then behind me sink again
This tardiest explorer, driving hard across the plain.

And through the night, behind the wheel, the mileage clicking west
I think upon Mackenzie, David Thompson and the rest
Who cracked the mountain ramparts and did show a path for me
To race the roaring Fraser to the sea.

How then am I so different from the first men through this way?
Like them, I left a settled life, I threw it all away.
To seek a Northwest Passage at the call of many men
To find there but the road back home again.
