Do YOUR Parents Preview and Restrict Certain Animes?

Good point, Osaka: there are plenty of manga/anime that don't have those kinds of drawbacks, and not just stuff like Pokemon or My Neighbour Totoro. Also, a good self-analysis of where your stumbling blocks lie is helpful as well. For some, even the mildest fanservice is a bit much; for others, blood gets a thumbs down. Learning to self-censor is an important part of self-control.

my parents used to restrict that and even how many hours of tv a day i watched and which shows on cartoon network or nicholodeon i could watch.
bleh, i'm older now, and much wiser from it. so it's a good thing in retrospect and i will do the same with my kids, even though they will complain about it just as much as i did.

Uhm... ok... I know no one is really expecting this but....

I make my parents watch/read most of my stuff. xD Well... o.o Not make exactly. I just casually sit them down in front of a TV or on the bed with some coffee, and casually hand over a manga book or plug in something. Like Kenshin.. Saint Tail... Tokyo Mew Mew... WISH... Uhmm.. what others? Oh! s-CRY-ed. Some other stuff I had.

They're always like... "*exaspertaed mushroom sigh* You do not, I repeat NOT, have to do this hun." Me: "But.. don't you want to watch it? ;-;" Them: "NO! >>;;" Me: "but... but.. don't you have to check it?" Them: "We trust you hun... now please turn it off... ::begging voice::"

I'm always like.. >_>!! Why must you trust me so much?! I mean.. I'm not going to go off and get stuff thats *ahem* you get the idea... -.- ...

So yeah.. thats how it goes in my realm. I always judge stuff before my little sister can watch it though.

I have not been monitor on the anime I watch (19 YO, dont live at home 1/2 the time) but I monitor myself and uses reviews here and in other media outlets to determine what I watch. I never had TV when I was young enough to have the TV show checking problem matter. I will check what my children watch when I have kidds and preview it before they see it.

My parents don't REALLY care what i read/watch. My mom actually likes helping me make choices on which book to buy. She likes to see all the diffrent ways people draw anime.

I wish my parents censored stuff more ... it strikes me as sad (sad sorta ironic funny) that I am generally the one who gets online to check reviews on pg or pg-13 movies to take my younger siblings to. And most of the stuff targeted at small children is just upsetting. Very little makes me madder than watching a show for 7 year olds on nicklodean and seeing innuendos every five seconds... that was sort of off topic. At this point I mostly self-censor or talk to my friends who have seen a series to get a better idea of whether its a wise choice.

Many of you are very fortunate. I personally do not own ANY anime or manga.

Why? Because my mother will find SOMETHING in EVERY anime or video game that she doesn't like (okay, she's cool with Mario.) We watched an episode of Rurouni Kenshin, the ep. where Sano fights Anji, and Mom complained about all the "Buddhist philosophy" in the episode. Hooray. Anji's a monk. So freaking what. If I buy a new video game, Mom confiscates the strategy guide overnight (sometimes more) and then proceeds to point out everything she doesn't like. Sometimes I feel like I live with the Gestapo. My dad's laid back about it. He trusts me. At least someone does.

mu suggestion Raiden: She's only trying to protect you. Keep that in mind. Build up trust with her an dlet her know that she can trust what you buy. And tell her that you don't take it seriously, what's isnide a agme or anime or movies.

Give your view point on what she's has a disagreement about and if that doesn't work out, tell her to get a chill pill (all in a joking and loving manner of course ).

What I do sometimes is have my parents watch my anime or look at a video game voluntarily. If you do that with her, she may see that you knwo whts in the anime and you dont find it bad or offensive enough to have her watch it. But then again she watched RK which is one of the most harmless (in some parts that is) anime out there, and she didnt like the whole Buddhist thing.

Thats my advice and good luck (and dont buy players guides anymore, cause 1) she cant read em and 2) figure the gam eout yourself. Go to GameFaqs which is like a players guide bu tonline and for free.)

It's kind of ironic...I'm really quite young to be doing my own checking. Most of my anime is watched by me alone, my parents knowing as little as "Oh yeah, I got some anime today...gonna go watch it...Bye!"

But I usually check a review (I learnt that the hard way T_T) first, then get a little bit...and if it's good...I get it all. I'm okay with violence...but too much blood doesn't make me go on a killing rampage, it makes me sick. Swearing is meh for me, while excessive nudity will instantly turn me off the show.

It's funny because a lot of the guys at my school go as far as reading the manga JUST for the sexual content...and that really irks me...I usually skip over that kind of stuff.

And I agree, it seems that parents always walk in at the wrong moment or flip to the wrong page, but I guess it's better to know the worst then to have a false security...somehow I don't think that's coincidence.

My mom is really restrictive when it comes to magic (She's like "Are you sure that's okay for you to watch?" and when I say yes she sighs heavily, and although she doesn't like to admit it, she respects my descision)...and my dad just isn't into anime...although he admitted he enjoyed Trigun.

My parents don't really restrict what I watch, but I don't want to bring anything that they would find offensive into the house. You could say that I, like a few people here, monitor myself. That, and the fact that I'll be 18 soon, they trust me to use my best judgment and not bring, like, say something pornographic into the house.

So, no, what I watch doesn't get restricted.

My parents don't monitor anything we watch or video games we buy and they never have. I'm not sure whether it's because they trust us or they are just ignorant to the kind of lives we (my brother and I) live. But I wouldn't say they don't care. I stay away from "MA" or "R" rated material anyway. But there are certain shows I wouldn't watch while my parents are around because I know they're not used to that material or they don't understand it.

The only kind of monitoring my mom does is checking how much time we spend on the computer/nintendo (around here we use the term "nintendo" to refer to video gaming of any sort). When mom thinks we've been playing around for too long (which to her means 30 min.) she'll come find us and say "Ya'll get off that machine and do some housework!" or "Get off that machine before you catch that 'computer disease'!" The last one I think is because she cares *shrugs*

My kid sisters usually watch anime with me though; so I'm very picky about what I watch because I know that they'll be watching it too. On more then one occasion, if it's a title that's raised a few eyebrows, I'll watch it before I let my sisters do.

you guys who have parents check stuff are lucky. My parents (non-christians) are like anti-monitering. They let me watch Predetor (R rated) with my brother when i was three and i had to wheedle out of watching Terminator 2 (R again) when i was 6 or so. The only thing close to a restriction they've placed on me is that until i was seventeen or so my dad didn't want me to watch *some* serial killer movies, like silence of the lambs or cell, or seven ect. and that was only because he didn't like the genre. yeah i'm surprised i managed at all, not to diss my parents i love them and they care about me they are just really liberal about things and i guess they don't see the impact that things could have. C'est la vie.

I like The Simpsons and Furi Kuri...

im gonna pipe in reall quick. I like furi kuri, chobits, love hina (borrowed two volumes), family guy, aqua teeen hunger force and the simpsons ect. I wish i could buy em all on dvd and watch em till my brain melted. i cant buy even after i move out on my own and hopefully my husband wont eiother.
this was all before i got into writing a pages out of my bible. proverebs psalms micah have all been wriiten out. on romans now.
Im not allowed to watch any of them.1) because my parents 2) I won't let myself cuz personally i dont prefere rude and crude comedy, i just want comedy [which is very hard to find] and 3) just becasue you can doesnt always mean you should. so i prefere not to taking fruitless risks. MY rule of thumb: if its not good my your younger siblings, how is it not be good for you?

well i hope you r parents restric certain animes, if not there's soemthing wrong. im happy if my parents find something wrong. i never miss it, but its comforiting to know that they even watch over me in even the most pointless of things. overall watching carttons is pointless, but that hasnt stopped me yet. its not like they're restricting something you need. think o fit this way, i rather ahve my parents over protective than the polar opposite. that would be real crappy

BTW gezze from what ive read, im surprised that FK is approved at CAA, and im really surprised that its not put on the do not discuss list.

Well, we try to restrict the "do not discuss" list to titles that have a long history of debate attached to them, not necessarily those that are well, less than polite. If we got too carried away with the list, we'd have just about every title on there.

And we do not "approve" of FK; we tolerate talks on it. Big difference.

I still feel squished. And not to start a debate, but, as you can see, I'm 12, and FLCL is my favorite anime. I taped the entire thing off Adult Swim and have both the manga and the soundtrack.

yeah i really liked FLCL too, i actually counted (cause i was checking it for a friend) the parts i had issues with and only came up with five. I could have forgotten/missed some but even so as one of my other friends said "thats five too many". I still enjoyed the series though purely for the fact that the first time i couldn't understand a single thing happening and the second i sadly could. I like being confused.

a lot of people dont understand FLCL until they watch it for the second time, or sometimes they have a sudden epiphany at the end of the series.

Hey guys...just a note from a mom on board that I find this thread really interesting! I have a 14 year old daughter and an 11 year old daughter. I'm going to tell the 14 year old about these boards; I think she'd love a place online where there are other Christian teens discussing anime!

I used to be very, very cautious over what my kids watched. But they're older now and they get some more leeway. I wouldn't let them watch "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" when they were little because I believed they would have a hard time distinguishing fantasy witches with real life practicing Wiccans. Well, now they know the difference, so I am ok with stuff like Sabrina and Harry Potter...just not a steady diet of it.

My younger daughter is watching "Princess Nine" on Anime Network VOD. Now, there are a few "adult" subjects here and there on the series of the nature that I like to discuss afterwards with her (like the two girls who find out they have the same father), but overall I think that's a good series for adolescent girls. We've seen the first episode of "Kaleido Star" together and I'd like to start getting that for her too. Notice that both these series are about teenage girls working hard to accomplish their goals; tthey are not magical series. We have also watched "Last Exile" off and on too, which also seems to be a fairly clean series for adolescents; although, again, there are serious issues that the show brings up that are good grounds for discussion. She also harbors a nostalgic fondness for Sailor Moon, which is only slightly below Sponge Bob in the annoying scale IMO.

My older daughter has really gotten into "serious" anime. She's more prone to like RahXehpon and Witch Hunter Robin then something light...but she does like His and Her Circumstances. Again, this is one that, because of the developments in the main couple's relationship towards the end of the series, merrited some discussion. But it's not like it made her more likely to make the same mistake, ok? Because she's got a good head on her shoulders about an issue like that, she sees the moral/sprirual reasons and the practical reasons to stay pure. At this point, she gets to see most anime she wants to see. I'd say there are a few exceptions...I don't want her seeing the RahXephon movie (as opposed to the series), or X/1999, or Angel Sanctuary, or the show that shall not be named here (grins, or "The End Of" movie). Two that I'm borderline on with her are Ceres Celestial Legend and Cowboy Bebop.

My older daughter has also started reading manga...she's reading Alice 19th and Boys over Flowers now. But I previewed Hot Gimmick for her and that one's getting sold on Ebay instead.
