In a URL why is the .com/.org/.net needed

I'm just curious i.e. the url for this site http://www.christiananime.net why do we need .net?

That part of a URL is called a "Top Level Domain", and describes the type of entity/owner who owns that site name, as well as defines the purpose of that site.

Very generally speaking....

".com" sites are operated by commercial/business entities.

".org" websites are run by organizations, usually non-profit.

".net" sites are usually hosted by network providers, like website hosts, for instance.

.gov for government sites

.edu for universities etc.

And so on.

Maybe we should apply for a ".odd" address. :P
