Sushi/Green Tea Poll!

Postby Xavier249 » Tue Jun 08, 2004 5:35 pm

First of all, this is to find out how many of you like green tea and sushi.
Personally I love both, especially in combination!

Green tea: any kind of green tea is fine, I just request that this doesn't turn into a "What is green tea" thread.

We all know what Sushi is though, right? Of course it is Raw fish, right?
Nope!
Sushi is a japanese food that sometimes involves raw fish, but the raw fish is not what makes it sushi. The way the rice is prepared is what makes it Sushi. They make the rice as normal, but before molding it the odd ways they do for sushi, they add vinegar.

Yup, its the vinegar that sets sushi off from other japanese foods.
I'll list off some Sushi I had last time I was at Sushi Ichiban(a local Suchi restaurant, the name means "The best Sushi"). This was a week or 2 ago.

Start with the rolls:

Rolls: In general they round, have seaweed on the outside holding in the rice, and having the main ingredients in the middle.

California roll: Your basic American roll, you will not see this one in Japan. It has as a main ingredient: imitation crab and some vegetables.

Inside out California roll: Same thing as the previous except the seaweed is wrapped on the inside of the rice instead of the outside.

Crisp California roll: Same as inside out one, except for they dip it in the hot oil to deep fat fry it just enough to make the outside a little crisp.

Kappa roll: only main ingredient is cucumber. Cucumber is in the middle. I am told this one is mentioned in the Saiyuki manga.

Spider rolls: Some odd vegetables and deep fat fried softshell crab. They arrange the crab legs so that some is poking out the sides like a dead spider. This one is a very special roll and a personal favorite of mine.

Rock and Roll, roll: If I remember right, this one had mango in it and some other odd veggies.

Oyster roll: This one has oyster in it and roe(fish eggs). Tasted good, but I am not a fan of roe.

Nebraska roll: This one you will only see in NE. It has cooked steak in it. Yum!

Now for the real sushi:

real sushi: This is not what they call it, its my personal joke, its just that these aren't rolls. They have a little rectangle of rice with some sort of seafood on top.

White fish: a slab of raw white fish.

Tuna: A slab of raw Tuna, this one is the most tolerable by americans as we are so used to tuna anyway

Eel: A slab of eel held on be a string of seaweed and covered in soy sauce.

Squid: YUM!! A piece of raw squid. Very chewy, you have to really like sushi to enjoy this piece because it won't be leaving your mouth anytime soon.

Salmon: A true test of a sushi goers mettle. Salmon is so foreign to us that it is hard to handle.

For any of you thinking of an excursion out for sushi. Go with friends. that way you can get more variety as the rolls come in groups varying from 4-10. Start with rolls as they are easier to eat. If you have a group that you all know can really handle sushi, go for the more adventersome things like squid.

The reason their is such a variety is that 8 of us went together last time. 5 of us could handle sushi, and we still got a large variety.

I have only been out for sushi 5 times in my life. First time I only ate one piece of sushi and went and threw up in the bathroom. So, it is an aquired taste. Try and try again.

One last thing is: Sushi is EXPENSIVE!!! Expect to drop at least 25 dollars for a decent meal of sushi, even when splitting. I spent 30 last time.

I've had some Eel and Tuna Sushi. I kind of liked it. I think I'll travel the world just to eat different types of food. I've had some Arizona Green Tea, but I dont' know if it counts as the 'real thing' concerning green tea.

oh I forgot 2 things.

It is a multiple choice poll. You can vote for both Green tea and Sushi seperately.

Also Arizona's green tea works, if it's the only kind you have had.

I prefer mine straight and strong. :)

I love sushi, but alas, can rarely afford it. A good meal isn't that expensive however. I know of a couple of places here in Steeltown where a decent dinner can be had for around ~$10 CDN or less. My personal favourite so far is the spicy eel roll, but I haven't tried everything on the menu yet. There are also some pretty good Korean variations that don't incorporate fish.

What I really want to know is where I can buy a bottle of decent plum wine.

Yeah thats true about the decent price at some place. Sadly I have become loyal to a certain place because I know that the chefs there are Japanese so I'll stick with their prices.

Plum wine? umm I am underage, can't help you there. :)

I had some really good stuff out once, and have been looking for it ever since. Unfortunately, what's available in the local stores tastes like a mix of plum juice and cheap whisky.

Sushi is utter nastieness. Green tea is something I want to have, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

Green Tea is excellent for me, and especially after dinner, as the evening progresses. In regards to Sushi, I can't say that I've had any yet, because I only know one person that likes it that I could possibly go with at this point, and she's a girl. Now going to get expensive Sushi with one other girl and myself - sounds kinda fishy to the general public. I've made it a resolution though, and will try and get some no later than the beginning of next semester with one of my English teachers back at college. :brow:

Fishy? You dare use such a bad pun on my thread? :wow!: COOL! I love it!

Yeah I agree, that might not work. You could try daring some friends to go with you, and then drag her along too. Either way, I hope get to try some soon.

Green tea is great at any time, but your times sound so appropriate. :)

I love sushi. Salmon sashimi is my favorite, if it's fresh. (sashimi = raw) Mmmmmm... I could be a happy, happy grizzly bear. :) (You must not have had good salmon if it was hard to handle. But it could just be personal preference.) Yellowtail sashimi is also good.

I usually order the chirashi sushi... that's basically "assorted." That way I get a little bit of everything. And of course, it wouldn't be the same without the steaming cup of green tea. *happy sigh*

I don't get to taste Green Tea much...since there is some lacking in the house. On the other hand, Sushi is really good. I like the kind with rolls and rice in the middle, the seaweed is just so good. Raw salmon is delicious, I love the pieces along with that green sauce...heh I forgot what its' called. Oh and well Eel is just pleasent; I think I can eat most of Sushi. With the exception of squid, it's just so nasty and chewy--it never goes down.

Yeah, I forgot to mention Sashimi.. thanks for bringing it up. :)
Sashimi is basically just a slab of raw seafood, typically fish from what I understand. Haven't actually had it yet, but its probably good. :jump:

Oh, Salmon, its a personal favorite too. I haven't ever had a problem with it, but I have been told that it is a good "litmus" test for if you like sushi.

Yellowtail. . haven't ever had that one, sounds nummy. :)

Chirashi sushi is the way to go, if you're alone. I've only had sushi on my own once. It was in the Galleria Mall in Texas. My fellow choir members were going for Ice Cream, so I went for sushi. There I had 2 salmon and 8 california rolls. oh, and scared the waitress by thanking her in Japanese.
(She had brought me training chopsticks earlier, thinking I had no clue what I was doing. I kind of didn't though since it was the first time for me reading the menu alone, and ordering solo. )

You seem to know that the two go hand in hand. :thumb: Sushi/Green Tea that is. Last time I was out for sushi I had about 5 cups of hot green tea. Really good stuff.

Oh thanks you guys. :) It seems that a lot like sushi.

hmm. . . though it is ever occuring to me that I cannot be complete when it comes to telling about sushi. I forgot to mention the green stuff, wasabi.
It is customary to dip sushi into a mixture of soy sauce and wasabi using either your hands or chopsticks. Hands are acceptable because sushi was originally designed to be "finger food" or so I am told.

Wasabi: A japanese horseradish ground up into a kind of paste. Has more of a nasal burning sensation than a fire sensation like the kind that you would get from jalapenos.

Pickled Ginger: Pink stuff in strips that was ginger at one time. Has a very strong flavor so it is good to use to as a palette cleanser between sushi's. They pickle it by covering it in salt mixture for about a week.

Squid was my litmus test. I think I just about can stomach any sushi now. If you don't like it and you stick it in your mout, Good luck, you are so going to need it.

Apparently, wasabi is supposed to kill any evil germs that reside on your uncooked fish, but I can't eat anything with a morsel of wasabi anyway.

Yes, sushi is extreme tastiness. It depends on where you live of course, but being in Toronto and having Asian malls everywhere makes it easier to find and it makes it cheaper. The last time I had it, I went out with my friends and we only spent about $10 per person (including drinks), and we weren't even able to finish the whole platter. I also regularly go to a nice Japanese restaurant that has sushi, but I have yet to try it because the ramen wins me over.

About Korean stuff: the only Korean thing I have had is some Korean BBQ. That stuff is awesome.

I've never had sushi. It sounds scary. o.o But I have had Hibachi chicken...mmmm. So much better than nasty greasy Chinese food.

Green tea is the best...I like to drink it hot during the winter a lot. It even tastes good with no sugar in it. o.O But sometimes I sweeten it anyway ^_^;

Hmm, I had never heard that before. Thats kinda cool. I like a little wasabi, but only just enough to give me an excuse to drink more green tea. :)

You are so lucky! The reason sushi is so expensive where I am is because of the location. It's hard to get fresh fish in NE.

Never had it, but a scene in X where Sorata Arashi and Kamui sit down in a Korean restaurant has made me want to try some. :)

Yeah, thats a great time. Nothing like it really. I need to get one of those authentic Japanese mugs too. that would be really cool.
Can't wait till I am 21 and can have hot Saki on a winters night. oh well. Patience is a virtue.

It seems to me that people here really like Green Tea or Sushi, or just plain haven't tried either. Not too many don't like it. Thats cool. :)

You guys are going to kill me for this, but there's an Asian grocery store/restaurant near me. Yep. Unfortunatly, most of the stuff is Korean. Not that I have anything against Korea. The largest amount of Hello Kitty stuff I have ever seen. Oh, and people? I got a bento box. Ever since I read Cardcaptor Sakura, I have wanted a bento box.
Sushi and green tea are good. But hot sake and plum wine sound better. Xavier249 has 3 years to go. I have 9. Pity me.

I looked fom manga but all I found was a video section. The thing was, all the videos were in white cases. With white labels. And Korean writing. *twitch*

Yeah there is a Korean asian market place here too. Korean characters scare me, they have a lot of circles and ovals and such.

The japanese store also has tapes, but I would be afraid to get one because I have no clue what they'd have. *Wishes he could read Kanji really well. needs patience*

I'll try and get there soon to let you guys know what I found. :)

I LOVE sushi ^_____^ My favourites are the Spicy Scallop, Shrimp Tempura, Salmon, and the Dynamite roll. I like pretty much any sushi except for octopus and squid, because I find it tastes too rubbery when uncooked. I quite like Green Tea too, but I wouldn't deem it my favourite tea.
But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Arizona Iced Teas are great! Don't you love those weird elongated can ones?

Most of the time I don't have Arizona teas though, so I brew my own with whatever new variety is available at the Japanese Store. Recently they had these silk little baggies, that you could get 50 of and put your fav loose tea in. I promptly got gunpowder green tea. The tea leaves are all rolled up and dried into little balls making gunpowder teas really strong stuff.

I like my tea really strong, but I have been told green teas are supposed to be brewed lightly so you don't kill the flavor. Still I can't stop being who I am though.

I like pretty much any sushi except for octopus and squid, because I find it tastes too rubbery when uncooked. I quite like Green Tea too, but I wouldn't deem it my favourite tea.

What is in a dynamite roll?

YAY!! lots of people like sushi!! :)

Yeah the rubberiness can be a problem for some.

Do you like oolong tea better? or whats your fav?

Oddly, I dont really like much seafood. No Lobster for me please. However, I really enjoy Sushi. However, I cannont eat a lot of it. To much makes me feel really queezy. Fatty Tuna is great, and I like Eel. Though I dont know if I have had it on a string... :eyebrow:

If only my wife also enjoyed sushi, then I could have it more often. Oh well.

Green Tea is ok. Im not a huge tea drinker, but when I do, I prefer flavored tea's. Lemon, mint, that kind of stuff.
Depend on it. God's work done in God's way will never lack God's supply. He is too wise a God to frustrate His purposes for lack of funds, and He can just as easily supply them ahead of time as afterwards, and He much prefers doing so.

I remember that one fateful day when Coach took me aside. I knew what was coming. "You don't have to tell me," I said. "I'm off the team, aren't I?" "Well," said Coach, "you never were really ON the team. You made that uniform you're wearing out of rags and towels, and your helmet is a toy space helmet. You show up at practice and then either steal the ball and make us chase you to get it back, or you try to tackle people at inappropriate times." It was all true what he was saying. And yet, I thought something is brewing inside the head of this Coach. He sees something in me, some kind of raw talent that he can mold. But that's when I felt the handcuffs go on.

That makes sense. eel on a string? *Thinks for a second. . * Oh! Its more so a really thin strip of seaweed wrapped around the whole thing. Eel on a string sounds like one of those doughnut eating contests.

Sheesh you really are like Sora, already married. Cool! :thumb:

:sniffle: allergic to mint. :waah!:
But I have never had lemon tea before. Sounds nummy. :thumb:

I do like other teas than green tea, but Green tea was brought up because it seems to me to be more closely related to Anime. :)

What a shame, being allergic to one of the most natual flavorings. I'll :waah!: with you.

The eel I have had, is actualy cooked before being all 'sushied up'. Im not sure if you are suposed to eat raw eel.... Clarification?

Sora? *can only think of Kingdom Hearts* Sora Sora Sora.....

I am actually not sure whether the eel I ate was raw or not. Probably not would be my guess. I do know it was coated heavily in Soy sauce, so it didn't taste like much else. (I didn't coat it, it came that way.)

Sorata Arisugawa of the questionable X series.
