1/28, patron saint day. Who's yours?

Postby SierraLea » Mon Jan 28, 2013 6:26 pm

Today, January twenty-fourth, is the day to celebrate your patron saint. Who is yours and why did you pick them?
I have St. Thomas Aquinas for mine, since the dude was a genious and very likely had the same brain condition I do, which makes him a great patron for me.

Today is the twenty eighth, and I think you meant "genius".

I'm not Catholic, but if I was I think I would have Joan of Arc as my patron saint, because she's cool.

If there's a patron saint of nudity then I pick that one.

If there's not then I want the patron saint of food or video games.

How about the patron saint of proper spelling while we're at it?

Actually, I've decided my patron saint is whoever the saint of patron is.

Ugh Tequila is so gross.

St. Augustine also brewed beer, so he gets my vote. Also Arnold of Soissons is the Patron Saint of Belgian beers and I love Belgian Trappist beer, so he also gets my vote.

Cursory search gets:
Food-
Cooks St. Martha
Bakers St. Elizabeth of Hungary, St. Nicholas of Myra
Butchers St. Anthony the Abbot
Grocers St. Michael

Computers-
St. Isidore of Seville

Alcohol-
Brewers St. Augustine, St. Nicholas of Myra
Wine trade St. Amand, St. Vincent of Zaragossa
Vintners St. Amand

But no patron saint of distilleries.

Presuming you mean proper spelling seriously, which I highly hope you did -
Teachers
St. Gregory the Great
St. John Baptist de la Salle

Guys, I meant this to be a more serious thread where people would share their stories. Are you intentionally making fun of this, or are you just being funny?

Can it be both? Because I can seriously, honestly say that I would want my patron saint to be the one of chocolate, but there isn't one, and that makes me very sad.

Don't see what the problem is with a patron saint of alcohol and merrymaking. Though honestly, I haven't drank enough to formulate an opinion on which drink I would choose.

Yeah well that's just like your opinion man.

I'm gonna go with St. Anthony the Abbot because I love steak and he's the patron saint of butchers so he probably could get me some really good steak.

I'm pretty sure they're just being funny for the most part, and here's why I think that. Most active members of CAA (probably over 90%) are not versed in this sort of tradition since none of the protestant churches really handle saints in any meaningful manner, and have NO idea how it works, and couldn't name a saint connected to a specific topic to save their lives. Rather than ignoring the thread or being rude, they're trying to be humorous since it's the best option for still interacting in an entertaining way. I had to search on American Catholic to even post the ones I did because I don't know off the top of my head either.

making things more serious, I don't have one particular saint, but I do have quite a few I look to for inspiration. One is St. Therese of Liseux, who suffered from tuberculosis. I'm also a big fan of Augustine, because he said so many wonderful things.

St. Augustine is apparently the patron saint of alleviation of sore eyes.

If you're listening, St. Augustine, little help here bro?

It is kinda interesting that both Protestants and Catholics claim "ownership" of Augustine.

The patron saint of miners (close enough to what I do) is St. Barbara; apparently she's who you call when a fire's giving you grief. I guess she mined asbestos?

I'm also a fan of Darren Sproles. Did you know, before he was a saint, he was a Charger? That's a miracle worthy of canonization if I ever heard it.

Saint Christopher, patron saint of travelers. As someone who has spent a good portion of their lives bouncing from place to place, I can appreciate the notion of the Christbearer; though as I am not a confirmed Catholic, I cannot lay proper claim, only an appreciation for the ideal.

Also St Joan of Arc, because if she was anything like Mark Twain described, she is my example of what a good person should be.

I'm a convert, so the name I chose upon First Communion and Confirmation was "Pius," or rather "Pio" in honor of St. Padre Pio of Pietrelcina. Oh wait this is an old thread...
