Silly question ...

Silly question ...

Postby Aijou » Sun Jun 06, 2004 9:29 am

Does anyone know of any good "how to draw anime" books? I haven't been able to find any in bookstores. I mean, I know that's where they are supposed to be and all, so it sounds like a weird question, but I haven't found any. I probably just didn't look well enough, but oh well, I thought I would ask anyway.

This isn't a silly question. ^^ Though it might fit better in the art section.

I've personally found the "How to Draw Manga" books pretty helpful, yet not extremely detailed.

Where did you get it from? :/ I know that sounds really stupid. Maybe they have them at Media Play or something.

I didn't know there was an art section ^_^;; hehe.

When I went to disney world I only got to spend a regrettably short time in the big japanese store at epcot! They did have a couple of HTDM books there though :)

So, uh, if you ever happen to stop by disney world you can get one there.. otherwise, try b&n (bn.com)!

My kids have the How to Draw Manga series Volumes 1 - 8 plus extra issues that cater to certain topics, such as Bishoujo drawing and anatomy and such. They are very worthwhile and I believe it's in the UCLA curriculum as a manga drawing course - not absolutely positive since I heard about this from someone.

I bought them from various anime stores, online, Waldenbooks and other book stores in the art section. I'm sure someone has already stated this, but I just felt like typing here.

[size=84][color=seagreen]YOU SEE

You see into the deepest part of me ---

beyond the fog I hide behind.

You cast your light upon the shadows

that stretch like cobwebs in my mind.

You ease the pain when I am hurting,

and morbid visions from my past

pierce into the realm of Reason

as though I danced on blades of glass.

You grant me strength when I have fallen

and, once again, I've lost my way.

You take my hand in Yours and lead me

into the promise of a brand new day.

You bring order to all my chaos,

yet set my well-laid plans awry.

You place me on a firm foundation ---

then give me wings so I can fly.

You sand away my roughened edges

and polish all the dullest parts

until I stand before Your presence...

a newly-sculpted work of art.

You see into the heart within me,

right through my motives and selfish will.

And yet, in spite of all You see

You say You love me even still.

There are alot of "How to draw anime/manga" books out there. You should be able to find them in your local book store's art section or manga section. I would warn you, though, to be careful and look through the book before you buy it. Often many of these books get carried away in teh fanservicey area when teaching you to draw people. So-- umm, Ye be warned.
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

We used to have a thread on this, but I can't find it ... hmm.

Anyway, I own the How To Draw Manga series, which is good, except that some of them have instructions on how to draw "more revealing" poses ... something we don't really need to know (this was, unsurprisingly, in the Couples book). They can be somewhat fanservicey, so check the book first before you buy it if this is going to be an issue for you personally.

I also have The Art of Drawing Manga by Ben Krefta which is a nice volume on face work, although his art style isn't always appealing to me. Barnes and Noble also sells it in a gift set with some cheap-o art tools, a nice package if you just have a pen and paper and need a little help getting started (or you can buy the book by itself).
