Kawasaki disease

Postby Sammy Boy » Thu Sep 13, 2012 2:36 am

Hi everyone, the daughter of two good friends from our church's fellowship has high fever and rashes all over her body.

She is only nine months old.

Initially the doctors thought it was hand foot mouth disease, but they think now it could be Kawasaki disease (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kawasaki_disease).

As a dad I know it is a terrible feeling not knowing what is wrong with your child, or how to treat / cure it.

Could you please pray for this little girl, her name is Sophie.

Thank you.

Praying! My little brother had that disease a few years ago. It started with high fever and went on to blood poisoning, unnatural growth of the heart and rashes. I'll pray the Lord will save her just as He saved my bro!

Thanks! Sophie is now better, but her parents will need to take her to the doctor for follow-up checkups to see extent of damage done to blood vessels near her heart.

Kawasaki can be really nasty stuff. I had to admit one of the kids I was taking care of with it. Hopefully they got lots of aspirin down her and there is no lasting coronary vessel damage.

Won't the aspirin lead to Reye's Syndrome?

Hi everyone, Sophie's parents had to take her to the hospital again - fever going as high as 39.6 degree celsius.

It looks like Sophie is having a relapse of this disease.

Could you please continue praying. Thank you!

Just an update on Sophie.

The treatment used previously is no longer working on her - she is not responding to it. So they have to put her on high dose steroids now.

Continued prayers would be most appreciated. I feel really desperate for her.

Reye syndrome is certainly a concern, but it's linked with certain specific viruses. For Kawasaki, aspirin is actually part of the preferred treatment, the primary component being IV immunoglobulin, to reduce the inflammation. However, it seems like that is no longer sufficient. :( Steroids are a semi-desperation measure; they're worth trying, but there haven't been encouraging studies on their efficacy.

So young to go through something like this, and now to be put on steroids. :( Praying. Trust in Jehovah-Rapha, everyone. He IS healer and is working even now.

Thank you all for your prayers.

The immediate danger for Sophie is over as high dose steroids seem to have worked.

Her parents will need to see a cardiologist tomorrow to check whether there is any long term damage to Sophie.

Sorry to bother you all.

Despite being discharged, Sophie's mum got an urgent call from the hospital asking her to take her baby back.

Continued prayers would be most appreciated, thank you.
