What Old-School anime have you seen?

Postby rocklobster » Sat Oct 22, 2011 5:36 am

I like to occasionally look at old-school anime titles because I feel it's a great way to see how the medium has evolved. I was wondering if I have any company on here. What are some of the titles you've seen.
For the purpose of this thread, "old school" means pre-1990s, when Sailor Moon debuted in the states (I was going to exclude Dragonball, but since it was actually airing in Japan in the 80's long before it came here, I changed my mind)
Here's my list:
Astroboy
Speed Racer
Captain Harlock
Galaxy Express 999
Mobile Suit Gundam (original)
Voltron
Maple Town (some of it)
Flying House
Superbook
Nausicaa
Grave of the Fireflies
My Neighbor Totoro
Kiki's Delivery Service
Castle in the Sky

If you're talking about ]this Maple Story, that aired in 2008- most definitely not 'old school'.

Anycase, I've seen

Nausicaa
Kiki's Delivery Service
Grave of the Fireflies
Castle in the Sky
the first episode of Super Dimentional Fortress Macross (really want to continue because I thought it looked great)
Over half of Rose of Versaille

and will soon be watching
Candy Candy
Chie the Brat
Legend of the Galactic Heroes
Future Boy Conan

Spaceship Yamamoto. Probably the coolest thing I've ever seen. And everything else that everyone has already posted.
Derek -The Daring Pokemon - A cool, totally awesome Pokemon that uses his power of song, medical skills and powers of cool to make others see things differently. He is not temperamental, but he likes to pull pranks and grins when you fall into his traps. Usually, he styles a fedora and prances around on all fours, he's all black with a white belly.

"Although I look into infinity. I only see the lords eyes, always shining upon my face and smiling in my heart. He will always be with me, no matter where I may go. Always watch over me lord. For I shall be eternal in your light."-Derek.

Hm, lets see. The Japanese dub of Transformers:G1 (I think it's "Fight! Super Robot Life" or something), Head Masters, Master Force, Victory, and Zone, pretty much all pre-90's Transformers stuff. I've seen bits and pieces of The Cockpit, Mobile Suit Gundam, and Cowboy Bebop (Don't know if this really counts, there's some people who consider this "old school"). Oh, and the original Area 88 OVA.

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters. He restores my soul; He guides me in paths of righteousness For His name's sake. Even though I walk though the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff, they comfort me. Thou dost prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; Thou hast anointed my head with oil; My cup overflows. I've seen some scenes of Speed Racer, Voltes V, Daimos, and World Masterpiece Theater.
Whatever the season in life, the RIGHT attitude makes all the difference.

Oh dear... how much space have we got? In no particular order:

Astro Boy, Superbook, The Flying House, The Castle of Cagliostro, Akira, Nausicaa, Macross, Dragon Ball, Gigantor, Neo-Tokyo, Robot Carnival, Angel's Egg, Gunbuster, Megazone 23, Southern Cross, Mospeada, Voltron, Amon Saga, Black Magic M-66, Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, Appleseed, Dominion Tank Police, Gall Force, The Humanoid, Lensman, MD Geist, Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water, Outlanders, Prefectural Earth Defense Force, They Were 11,

Man, I had to do a LOT of double-checking for this. It's weird how many things were actually newer (or older) than I initial thought. Even after all that, I'm pretty sure one or two slipped through the cracks.

Just starting Star Blazers. It looks great for it's time. It has a nice Star Trek/Buck Rogers feel to it. And the outfits remind me of sentai. Good ol Leiji Matsumoto. You deserve more fans.

Some of you guys are listing 90s shows as "old school". Gundam Wing isn't that old; it came out in like 1995. I thought we were listing pre-90s stuff only.

Anyways, I've seen:

Andersen Douwa Ningyo Hime (AKA The Little Mermaid) - 1975
Choudenji Machine Voltes V - 1977-1978
Mobile Suit Gundam TV series - 1979
The Castle of Cagliostro - 1979
Space Runaway Ideon - 1980-1981
Sekai Meisaku Douwa: Hakuchou no Mizuumi (AKA Swan Lake) - 1981
Mobile Suit Gundam movies - 1981-1982
Hyakujuu Ou Golion - 1981-1982
Ideon: Be Invoked - 1982
Super Dimension Fortress Macross - 1982-1983
Armored Trooper Votoms - 1983-1984
Zeta Gundam - 1985-1986
Double Zeta Gundam - 1986-1987
Akira - 1988
Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack - 1988
My Neighbor Totoro - 1988
Yoroiden Samurai Troopers (AKA Ronin Warriors) - 1988-1989
Mashin Eiyuuden Wataru - 1988-1989
Hades Project Zeorymer - 1988-1990

And I've seen parts of:

Mazinger Z - 1972-1974
Yuusha Raideen - 1975-1976
UFO Robo Grendizer - 1975-1977
Muteki Koujin Daitarn 3 - 1978-1979
Akage no Anne (AKA Anne of Green Gables) - 1979-1980
Uchuu Senshi Baldios - 1980-1981
Super Dimension Century Orguss - 1983-1984

I've also seen the 70s-80s anime they used to air on Nick Jr., like Grimm's Fairy Tales and Maya the Bee and shows like that. But it's been so long since I've seen them that I don't really remember what they were like anymore.

I guess I can post my very short list of pre-90's stuff, which reminds me that I really need to go see Macross. Anyways.

Area 88
Laputa: Castle in the Sky
Kiki's Delivery Service
Legend of the Galactic Heroes: My Conquest is the Sea of Stars
Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro
Macross: Do You Remember Love?
Mobile Suit Gundam I
Mobile Suit Gundam II: Soldier of Sorrow
Mobile Suit Gundam III: Encounters in Space
My Neighbor Totoro
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
Patlabor: The Movie
Aim for the Top! (aka Gunbuster)
And I am currently watching the original OVAs of Legend of the Galactic Heroes.

Unfortunately not as many as I probably should have. I still need to see Macross, Votoms, The Wings of Honneamise, and the rest of UC Gundam, along with some other stuff.

Kiki's Delivery Service
Ginga Nagareboshi Gin
Kimba the White Lion/Jungle Emperor
Speed Racer
Dragon Ball
My Neighbor Totoro

That would be my very short list of pre-90's anime I've seen.

Probably the most old-school I've seen was Sailor Moon when I was younger and Ranma 1/2 more recently. I haven't seen as many anime as you guys lol

EDIT: Oh wait, My Neighbor Totoro and Kiki's Delivery Service count? Okay those too. :D

I liked Gunbuster, though the content is, uh, well, it's Gainax, isn't it? ^_^;;

Add to that Urusei Yatsura, Maison Ikkoku, Megazone Two Three :eh:, Kimagure Orange Road, various Lupin III and Macross. I just have this thing about Takahashi Rumiko.

Ranma 1/2 is probably getting regarded as old-school by today's audiences, sigh.

Oh I LOVE Old school stuff! Gundam 0079, Harlock, Mazinger, Saint Seiya, Star Blazers, and of course my All time favorite anime Fist of the North Star. The classics are the best! I really wish there was an easy legit way for me to watch Saint Seiya, the uncut dvds are out of print and only went up to episode 60ish. It would take alot of time if I tried to name every old school show I like though, I should just take a picture of my anime DVDs and Manga majority of them are pretty oldschool especially the CPM and ADV Titles.
