Borders to Shut Down- Completely.

I have a borders and a B&N somewhat nearby, in opposite directions. I at least go near the borders sometimes, the B&N is always out of the way. I'll miss the Borders.

The welcoming atmosphere thing must vary store to store. I've never felt unwelcome in my B&N or Borders, and whenever I get to either one I hang out and read in lots of books.

Same. And hoping for a future writing career makes me mourn the loss of Borders even more, for the reasons stated in the article. :[

There's no Borders nearby, and I've only ever visited one in real life once.

So this won't affect me that much. It is sad to see them go, though.

This makes me nostalgically sad. Borders Rewards was pretty much the only reason my manga collection exploded from nada to an entire bookshelf between my freshman and junior years of college.

Though, I did stop going there while I worked at Hastings, having an employee discount removed any need to shop elsewhere, and after that, our local Borders closed down. I occasionally drop into B&N, but only if I'm already at the mall; I do stubbornly refuse to pay for membership in a rewards program, so they don't get much business from me.

Bummer. I like the tactile feel of physical books. I don't like anything that speeds the transition to digital book format being more readily available than physical book format. *sigh*

I won't miss Borders that much. Besides I get better discounts online at Books-a-Million due to my club membership.

I went to Borders today; they started their liquidation sale. Everything in the store was between 10-40% off. I didn't really find anything I wanted book or DVD wise. I'm positive that the discounts will be deeper as the days go on. It really hurt my feelings to see the little coffee shop shut down and all the chairs propped up. I loved my Strawberry Fruit Kaluas and would've loved to have had one more for the road.

The Coffee shop was the best part of Borders imo. It's sad that they didn't at least keep that open until the end. Most of my Borders memories are in the coffee shop.

Wow... I'm more of a Barnes N' Noble person, but still, wow! I can't imagine how much of an impact this is going to have on the book industry... :-/

A friend of mine found a news story that Books A Million will take over 30 Borders sites in a bid for those locations. One is Waldorf, Md which is the only book store in Southern MD which I had mentioned earlier.

The Washington Post article had the list of states and what cities and towns will have the change over.

Well the plan fell through. I heard this morning on the news. Books A Million backed out of the deal. We will now have to travel farther to get manga and other books or magazines.

The Walden-Books in the mall I work in closed down close to the beginning of last year. Then pretty much the entire rest of that mall died. Still, I've been a regular visitor to the Borders venders at the various anime conventions I go to.

This makes me sad. But hey, at least there will still be Books-A-Million, Barnes and Noble, et al.

I've been trying to figure out why I've never heard of Books a Million before this thread (or at least, have never taken notice to it) and went to their site, found their store locator, and came to find that there are none in Michigan. Well, that makes a lot more sense to me now. :lol:

With the Borders , Borders Express, and Walden Books in the area going to be shutting down that makes the closest bookstore (Barnes and Noble) about thirteen miles out. I can't express how much that sucks - because I literally only go there if I'm out that way in the first place, like to go to Old Navy. Which is like twice a year.

It's the same thing with our Walden Books - I never go there because, like Barnes and Noble, it's a good 20 minute drive to get there...

Thirteen miles is not a long drive though. XD For me, I have to drive at least a little bit to get to Best Buy, B&N, etc. so I really do not see the problem.

13 miles can mean a lot of different things to different people. Like to me, I spent 3 years commuting over an hour by car one way to work every day, so even making a 3 hour drive is no big deal. But to someone who maybe doesn't have a car, a license, perhaps a disability, or something else, 13 miles can be a very long journey. Just because it's easy for you and me to commute that distance doesn't mean it will be for everyone.

Hmm still though, anyone who has automotive transportation(Either getting a rid from someone or driving yourself) then it is not a far distance.

I will agree it is a far distance to walk or even ride your bike. But to drive? Not so much. Now if gas is an issue then that's something completely different.

I'm not going to dive into disabilities so you have that point.

I'm sorry, I just live in a very rural state where you do have to drive to get places sometimes and for me personally it isn't hard to do based on my circumstances. Now for others who have different circumstances, I can sympathize and understand it's different.

What I am saying is that from my subjective opinion, 13 miles is not far when driving there.

Yah, I don't even live in an area that ever had Walden Books or Borders, XD. The closest one was 90 minutes away, or 3 hours away.

Sooo I guess this isn't a huge loss for me.

I do sympathize for those of you who relaly depended on this company though. I just hope its not a huge sign of things to come... :/

Unfortunately, it looks like it. I mean B&N may last a while longer, but I think in the long run it may also be doomed.

It's almost like how Blockbuster and other video stores are dying. Netflix and Redbox are beating them because of convenience. People would rather instantly stream or walk out of walmart or beside a Gas station and select a movie fast than to go to a video store and look through the selection manually and then wait in a long line for it (And not to even mention those crazy late fees @_@). Now me personally, I like going to these stores and looking at the books and movies because they are physically there and I do enjoy seeing a good selection right there.

Not if stores like B&N keep up with market trends (e.g. The Nook), which they seem to be doing pretty well. That and -- unlike Borders who outsourced their online sales through Amazon.com -- B&N has their own website which they do sales from.

B&N is successful because they seem to have altered their marketing strategy while still having book stores. Borders didn't really do this. But who really knows what the future holds.

I think so. Things such as "the experience" I think will always be highly marketable (like Panera Bread!) Having nice decor and an atmosphere is always a great way to bring in revenue.

In fact, after businesses and the market gets over-saturated with things like technological convenience, I would not be surprised to see a resurgence of "old-fashioned" type of marketing, i.e. a nice and atmospheric bookstore as opposed to "amazon.com", to cater people such as yourself. Stuff like this tends to be cyclical.

I guess things such as company logos is a semi-good example. Current artistic design seems to be mirroring similar art-styles from back in the day (e.g. minimalism, etc). But you should ask someone who knows typography (Corrie) more.
