Cool. XP is still working for me so I won't blow my money on it yet. Looks a lot like the Windows Phone interface. :)

Though the 'apps' thing DOES sound a little like they're trying to rip off android and apple.

After I just got 7 a while ago? Heck nah. XDD Maybe later on, we'll see.

I personally, so far, think 7 is the best. XP was pretty good, but let's not mention Vista. XD

This.
But unfortunately, it wasn't a joke. 8(

"Code named 'Windows 8'." Sooo, that's not the real name? XD;

It certainly has an interesting format. Whether it's more user friendly will be up for discussion once it's released. I'm not terribly excited about this twisted copy of iPad "app" layout, but we shall see.

It seems strange to me that they're so set on keeping the tablet and desktop OS together. Even stranger is that they're trying to build an interface for use with both, which doesn't seem like the greatest idea.

I actually really like WinPho Metro, so I'm quite interested in Windows 8 (and if it runs on ARM as promised, then I don't have to get an x86 system, against which I remain intensely bigoted: don't get me started on why). However, I agree with blkmage that it seems like there's going to be a real disconnect between "legacy" apps and the new hotness. On ARM there won't be any legacy apps, of course, but I wonder how they will resolve it on PCs.

That was my same reaction when I heard this was announced.

Wow, I thought windows 7 was a good improvement and update of Microsoft, but now windows 8?

Man, this is a bit too much. I just got this version a year ago... :/

A lot of us thought that, though I'm inclined to think it's only because there was such a large gap between XP and Vista. Historically, Windows releases were only a few years apart.

Just look at the release dates for Windows in the past:
Windows 1.0 - November 1985
Windows 2.0 - December 1987
Windows 2.10 - May 1988
Windows 2.11 - March 1989
Windows 3.0 - May 1990
Windows 3.1 - April 1992
Windows NT 3.1 - July 1993
Windows NT 3.5 - September 1994
Windows NT 3.51 - May 1995
Windows 95 - August 1995
Windows NT 4.0 - August 1996
Windows 98 - June 1998
Windows 98 SE - May 1999
Windows 2000 (NT 5) - February 2000
Windows ME - September 2000
Windows XP (NT 5.1) - October 2001
Windows Vista (NT 6) - November 2006 for business, January 2007 for home
Windows 7 (NT 7) - October 2009
Windows 8 (NT 8) - Sometime in 2012 is projected

Windows 2000 is actually a part of the NT stream and is considered NT 5. Internally, you'll find that XP is often referred to as NT 5.1. So the consumer stream actually goes 95, 98, ME, XP, while the business stream goes NT 4, 2000, XP.

And actually, this talk about tablet and desktop reminded me of one of the things that I was not too hot on in OS X Lion, which was the reverse-importing of various iOSisms into OS X.

You are right, I messed that up and will be correcting my post to reflect this.

I'm glad I'm not the only one thinking this way. I really like my application folder the way it is. I don't want an app springboard on my computer. Operating Systems in general seem to be moving in a direction that I don't at all like.

I have a question. I see many ads for Windows Azure. Since Windows was supposed to be a codename, is Windows Azure Windows 8? Thanks and God bless!

Negative. Azure is a cloud-based application development platform, it's not an OS. For more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Azure_Services_Platform

Yeah like pretty much anything from Apple nowadays XD

Not that I hate their stuff, but I'd imagine if I paid retail price for an iPad (like most people probably do) and at the rate they update them, I'd flip out a little X)

I wouldn't be surprised if the final name for this OS is something like "Windows DT (Desk Tile)"....or something corny like that.

What I've found with Windows is they take all the features from the other OSes that I hated and none of the features I liked. Or, rather, it's like 70% features I hated from other OSes, 20% things I liked, 10% that just plain didn't make sense and wasn't even stolen from another OS.

It's just that Apple is proactive in coming up with new features I hate, so at least MS gives me time to hate them less, I suppose...

Yay! I'm going to get fingerprints all over my nice screen (and screens hate the oils in my skin so you can never quite get it off). Also, I prefer the design that places all of my apps on the bottom. If you're running 1 or 2 apps, that works great, but run 8-10 programs at the same time and flipping through the "pages" to look for them would get to be an annoying hassle. Besides which, my mouse-eye coordination and hand-keyboard coordination are perfect - these things are like extensions to my body by now! I don't even think! See, yadda yadda yadda! I can even type random silly things without concern because it's so easy - why ruin that?!

One pro for this system however, is for those of us with cats, it will reduce cat induced computer usage as they use your keyboard to sleep or look out the window XD. But given that it gets rid of the mouse, who really wins? The cat or the mouse? But yeah, I think it's far from purrfect :P.

Difference between iPad and iPad 2: Cameras. Why didn't they just put the cheap camera in the first one? XD (working in electronics retail, I'm starting to dislike Apple... Not to turn this into an anti-Apple thread...)

At least with Windows, well, I'm assuming I can just buy an update- like they did with Vista and 7. But between XP and 7 there was a good ten year gap. Why so soon with Windows 8?

I'm also still using Windows XP after all these years, but I'll be getting a new PC soon with Windows 7 on. I'll probably stick with it unless I HAVE to get 8 or 8 blows my mind in such a way that I really want it instead of 7 (the latter I highly, HIGHLY doubt).

There was a list posted before, but it's because that's an abnormally large gap. Releases between major versions of Windows have always been approximately three years apart, other than XP to Vista.
