Smurfs: the movie

Postby rocklobster » Fri Jun 10, 2011 5:01 am

In case you didn't know, there is a Smurfs movie coming this summer. I'm not sure how to feel about this. I liked the Smurfs, but...there are so many bad adaptations of cartoons out there. What are your thoughts?
Oh, here's a trailer: click here

From the trailers I've seen this movie looks absolutely horrible.

1. Why does this movie exist?

2. Why is Neil Patrick Harris in it?

When I first heard about this movie, my thoughts were "Hey, the cast looks really good, and so long as they stay true to the source material, this should be a fun little movie."

Then I saw the trailer and...sigh. Because yeah, the Smurfs really needed poop jokes, that's totally what was missing from it. And also putting them in New York, because there's obviously not toilets in Smurfville.

This movie looks awful.

For once, I agree with you Nate. Smurfs was a good, wholesome cartoon that I thoroughly enjoyed (even with the addition of Johann and Peewee.) This is a travesty. Hollywood, why must you continue to trash our collective childhoods just for quick bucks?

Please do not use that word. That really, really offends me.

Which word? oh wait, I think I know.
OK how about this:
Hollywood why must you constantly trash our collective childhoods in an attempt to make a buck?
I guess that word is a bit strong. I apologize.

Thank you, but then edit it out of your post, please. "Ruin," "destroy," and "trash" work equally as well. If you are truly sorry for your actions, you should make an effort to correct them, and editing your post to remove the word would be the best way.

Done. I will no longer use that word on this site for that purpose.
But really, I hate how Hollywood thinks that making us sorry we ever watched certain shows is a good thing to do.
Yes, there were great adaptations like GiJoe: Rise of the Cobra and Speed Racer, but those are few and far between.

I just don't get the logic behind why they made the movie like it is. I mean okay, I think that the concept of the Smurfs going to New York City isn't inherently bad by itself. It could work, on some level. But again, I feel like they only did it because you can't do poop jokes if you set it in Smurfville...which irritates me.

This had the potential to be an excellent movie, given the cast. And they took that potential and squandered it. I really wish people who actually watched the old shows and enjoyed and loved them would be allowed to produce these kinds of movies instead of heartless Hollywood corporates trying to make a quick buck.

Heheh. Funny you should mention them. Johann and Peewee were the original stars of the Belgium comic book from which the Smurfs came, but when the Smurfs were introduced as one-shot characters in the comics people ended loving them more than the original characters, much to the chagrin of the author, Peyo, who ended up hating them. Eventually the original TV series was made, and the it became popular in the US.

Its one of the few series I'm actually nostalgic about. :)

Unlike most other 80s kids, I never liked the Smurfs, so I've no nostalgia for it whatsoever.

This movie looks bad. Not worth the money.
I liked the Smurfs as a cartoon, but this movie, especially that they are set in NY, which is the most overused place of movies, I'll so pass.
I don't understand why Hollywood can make original movies instead of loads of remakes and things based on shows. It doesn't usually goes well with the concept of it.

Let's wait until we hear this movie getting bad reviews.

I know you all hate it. I probably will once I actually watch the smurfs. But I've never watched the original, so I wouldn't have anything to compare, but this looks hilarious! I wanna watch it!

Like a lot of people here, I don't really care for them.

But with this movie coming out, it looks like it will stay that way.
