Lord's Prayer?

Postby Taslin_Jewel » Sun May 16, 2004 4:44 pm

I have kind of an odd question. You guys all know the Lord's Prayer, right?

Our Father, who art in Heaven,
Hallowed be thy Name
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done
On Earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
Forgive our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory,
For ever and ever.
Amen.

Well, my church says a different version.

Our Father in Heaven
Hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come, your will be done
On Earth as in Heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours,
Now and forever.
Amen.

My question is, is it all right for us to say this version? I'm just a little confused...

o.O Sounds fine to me...seems like they probably just took it from a different translation of the bible.

Actually, almost every form of the spoken Lord's prayer is altered from the original we find in the Gospels. Two lines, I believe, have traditionally been added. However, this is not necessarily a bad thing.

The two versions you posted here seem nearly identical to me; all the differences seem nothing more than the same thoughts expressed in different language.

Taslin_Jewel, it seems that your church just uses a modern English version. If what you posted is the totality of the issue, personally, I would not be concerned.

I've seen much more erratic translations of the Our Father...but as long as they express the same idea, then no worries ^^

I think that Jesus just wanted us to get the point, not to be fanatics that are worried about every word being exact- not saying that you're a fanatic, but that you can rest and be peaceful knowing that you don't have to worry about it anymore. However, I think it's really cool that you care enough about what God thinks that you would question this. :)

I've always considered the "Lord's Prayer" to be more of an outline for how to pray (since this is what He says, basically). Not that I have a problem repeating the prayer rote.

Broken down it would work something like this:

Our Father, who art in Heaven, - Introduction.... "hello God, It's me" you get the idea.

Hallowed be thy Name - praise

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done
On Earth as it is in Heaven.
- Asking for His will in our lives

Give us this day our daily bread. - Petition for our needs

Forgive our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. - Asking of forgiveness for our sins.. as specific as we can remember, as well as forgiving others.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. - Petition for strength and protection.

For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory,
For ever and ever.
- More Praise

Amen. - well... Amen... that's all, ended.

Obviously God's not holding us to some sort of magic formula or something... but it did help me at a time in my life when I was having problems knowing how to pray.

Honesty though, I expected the two versions to be much more different.... so, the long/short would be..... yeah, I think it's ok.

madphilp explained my view pretty well. I don't see any problem with changing the wording of the Lord's Prayer, as long as the outline remains intact.

True. The question that spured the Lord's Prayer was "How should we pray?" not "What should we pray?" I believe it does have a great deal of truth to impart to us, and serves as a rather good model for prayer. However, it is traditional for it to be said in unison, and works excellently for that purpose.

YEa, it sounds ok to me. I mean there are diff versions of the Bible that all say the same thing but in dif words (ex. KJ, NKJ, NIV . . .) So as long as you have the basic down, I don't think there is anything wrong with it. ^_^
