Vocaloid Mania

Postby DangoDaikazoku » Sat Mar 12, 2011 11:08 pm

Just wondering how many other people are into Vocaloids? I love them, the more I listen the more real they sound. Which ones are your favorites? I have a passion for Len. If any of you don't know vocaloids, here is are a few of examples (and when I say a few, I mean a ton, and warning, I am going to be biased towards Len, really really really biased towards Len):

Luka Just Be Friends http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VoPzP-MwcLI
Gakupo King of Purple http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQoqK7Outq4

Hmm, I though Haku was a vocaloid? And Teto is Utau, but if you are including others Teto is pretty popular.

Anyways, I own an official copy of Vocaloid 2: Hatsune Miku that I bought from Japan. It's really easy to use and tons of fun! If only I had a drop of musical theory ability... XD

I love Vocaloid! Rin is my favorite, then Miku, then Meiko. Now, if only there could be a Christian based Vocaloid. That would be awesome.

In terms of voice, I actually like GUMI best, since her range is almost perfect. Luka's also pretty good, but her voice gets strange when it hits the lower end of her range, while Miku has the opposite problem.

I am a heavy follower of Vocaloid song production and I check out the Weekly Vocaran. Because of this, I'm much more interested in composers and producers than the Vocaloids themselves.

I really, really like supercell and wish they'd go back and make more Vocaloid songs (they've got a real vocalist, nagi, now). Every single one of their Vocaloid songs (Black Rock Shooter, Melt, World is Mine, Koi wa Sensou, Hajimete no koi ga owaru toki) has hit over 1 million views on Nico Nico Douga and they dominated the weekly vocaran for a while until they changed the ranking formula.

DECO*27 is a producer that's been tearing it up over the last year. His early songs were pretty good, but over the last year, we got some awesome GUMI songs like Yowamushi Montblanc and Mozaik Roll. He's also a decent singer and has covered a song or two of his.

hachi is another producer that's been pretty popular but really ramped it up last year. His songs tend to have really interesting instrumentation and he's responsible for that creepy Miku song from two years ago. I really like WORLD'S END UMBRELLA, Matryoshka, and PANDA HERO.

sasakure.UK has a pretty similar style to DECO*27, but with more electronic (I think). He has his fair share of hits, like *Hello, Planet., Wanderlust, and Bokura no 16bit Sensou.

livetune/kz is a group/composer who used to put out a lot of early popular stuff in 2008. They're a lot more electro and synthy, but their absolute best song is Last Night, Good Night. Other things you might've heard are Packaged and Light Song.

OneRoomP/Jimmy Thumb is a producer who does light rock stuff. He's got a bunch of really good songs like Starduster or Little Traveler. My favourite (and I think most people would agree with me) is from Y to Y.

wowaka is someone who's relatively new but hit it off pretty fast. His compositions are a lot more frenetic and he tends to get on vocaran a lot. You may have heard Rolling Girl, World's End Dancehall, and Ura-omote Lovers.

cosMoP is a guy who's pretty famous by now, largely because of one of the most insane compositions from the early days, Hatsune Miku no Shoushitsu. It earned him his alternate nickname and he's produced a ton of good stuff later on as well.

doriko is another one of those composers that has fairly low output but whatever he uploads catches on like wildfire. His most famous song is probably Romeo and Cinderella.

samfree is the guy who puts out a new eurobeat song for each Vocaloid. That's stuff like Luka Luka Night Fever, Megu Megu Fire Endless Night, etc.

And now I'm getting tired, so I'll end with a bunch of other excellent producers you should take a look at: OSTER Project, DeadballP, baker, minato, Shake Sphere, Toraboruta, 40meter, AVTechNO, Dixie Flatline, 164, wintermute, Nem, buzzG.

Like the character art? Cause otherwise I make Miku sing hyms, since that's the only kind of vocals I have the sheet music for and sound good acapella. XP

AWK! Miku is winning! Sorry for not including Teto (she is pretty fun!) and Haku (I had only just discovered vocaloids^_^) Oh wells... Lets start posting our favorite vocaloid songs here (and remember to stay appropriate!). I have been playing this series non-stop, not just because Len and Rin sing beautifully in this one, but because the animation is stunning. The third one is still being made (I can't imagine the time it takes to make these!) They have been working on the third for two years, but I would rather wait a while and have it be amazing, than have them post an unfinished song...

Yeah, the character art and character's personality. That would be epic awesomeness.

Maybe I'm just old and stodgy, but I don't get this. What makes a "vocaloid" any different than someone just singing with minimal music accompaniment? That being said, I don't really care to listen to music that isn't in a language I can full or at least partially understand. So I guess this is all lost on me, but I still don't get what makes this kind of music special.

In terms of music, Vocaloids serve as a consistent and accessible tool for creating vocals. The Vocaloid music production community on Nico Nico Douga is enormous and was driven by amateur composers, producers, and songwriters. As song creation became more and more elaborate, the need for instrumentalists grew and they got involved. The videos became more elaborate as well, and people like illustrators and animators got involved in this as well. In a weird way, it also got amateur singers on Nico Nico Douga recognized as well, when they started to cover Vocaloid songs.

Each of these communities is thriving on the Japanese internet today. I say 'was', because today, the community and audience has grown such that a lot of these people have now shifted over to professional production and are selling albums and stuff. So the real success behind the Vocaloid music scene are all the amateur musicians and other creative people who have a shot at getting their work out.

The most obvious example is that of supercell, who made some wildly popular Vocaloid songs before they went pro and collaborated with nagi, a Nico Nico Douga singer that became big by covering supercell's Vocaloid songs.

Not every Vocaloid producer who goes pro ditches Vocaloids. A lot of them mix in Vocaloid and real vocals in their albums, like in DECO*27's second album, Aimai Elegy, where a lot of his songs are covered by marina.

It's kind of timely, because one of the newer Vocaloid artists, wowaka, is releasing his first commercial album, Unhappy Refrain, today, which consists largely of songs he's uploaded to Nico Nico Douga before.

Anyway, here are a bunch of crossfades for Vocaloid albums:
DECO*27 - 愛迷エレジー
wowaka - アンハッピーリフレイン
ハチ - OFFICIAL ORANGE
40mP - コタエアワセ
buzzG - Symphony
sasakure.UK - プロトタイプ

Keep in mind that these are only album crossfades. A lot of the songs on these albums are actually available on Nico Nico Douga, along with full-blown video.

Oh, and I've written in some depth about some Vocaloid producers (with a ton of links to the videos for some of their more notable songs) before in a previous thread, but that thread died due to lack of interest.

I love Deco*27. Good stuff.

I don't follow much Vocaloid, actually.

Anyway, I found this, though, and it's kind of... I don't know what to make of it, but I'll post it, haha:
