What Kind of School Do You Do?

Where do you go to college?
"And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others.
But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus." I have been going to public school all my life, but I wish I was homeschooled.

Public schooling, though a good friend of mine was homeschooled for a couple years so I know a little of what that's like.

I don't think there's any one system of education that's perfect for everyone. Fortunately, my parents had the foresight to see that homeschooling was going to be ideal for me. I was, thus, homeschool'd from k-12, and then attended a private liberal arts school for college. Great experiences all around.
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

Wow, I knew there were lots of home schoolers here, but wow, that's a big percent
Public... but I don't like it (though being in a public school, shops are easier access, so it's not too bad)

That is a pretty big percent, but there's a lot of former Homeschoolers, and ones who did at one time but aren't any more mixed in there. For every option, I believe.

Besides, I thought that the majority of kids that are homeschooled are from religious (and of those mainly Christian) families.

I went to public school. If I have kids, I'll enroll them in public school. Even though it's not always easy, students learn things in public school they couldn't learn otherwise simply because of the diversity of people who attend. Of course, the needs of the student should be considered too, so I wouldn't say that I'd give the same answer across the board. I've known parents who have believed strongly in homeschooling only to enroll one or more of their children in public/private school because home schooling just wasn't the best thing for those particular kids.

Homeschooled (or I should say, I'm homeschooling.) Thanks to the large homeschool communities, I basically take classes like private/public schoolers. Most of those classes are put together by Biola University so it acts almost like a private school (minus going to school campus every day). Then I also take community college classes, so my mom barely teaches me any subjects, other than correcting my homework.

Let's see...

k-1 Public school. Seriously, kindergarten was the most useless year ever for me.

2nd grade- Christian school. Best school year ever. I learned more in that year then any other. And I adored my teacher.

3rd- Public school. Another useless year. Lamest teacher ever. She'd sit down at her desk the entire time and just yell when the class got noisy.

4th- Homeschooled. Saxon math FTW.

5-6th- Public school. Houghton-Mifflin math FTL. I never really understood negative numbers.

7- GED, Homeschooled. Saxon-Hake math really made me understand math. Being at home was great. I didn't have to be gone for 8 hours and I'd just get everything done in about 4. After going through the GED thing at the college, I can't imagine why anyone wouldn't try for one. EASY stuff. XD

Mainly private Christian schools. Many Christian students in primary school, very few in highschool, public TAFE (tertiary education) and I'm almost finished my teaching course at a small Christian university specialising in education, theology and performing arts courses.

I spent my first year of school in a private international school. After that, my parents enrolled me in a Chinese Christian private school. I will be graduating from high school there in a month.

The school I'm in has this reputation of being really strict. In fact, I'm always surprised at how lenient some of the other private schools here are. The thing I appreciate the most about my school, though, is that it has taught me discipline and strong Christian values, and that it introduced me to so many of my friends. It also kinda shelters its students from the outside world, so they keep telling us seniors to be careful once we get to college.
Whatever the season in life, the RIGHT attitude makes all the difference.

What the? Osaka came back?
Anyway, I was public schooled and in college for quite some time too.
BTW, Atria35, the reason so many ultra-religious families home school their kids is the fact that so many public schools today teach things that are contrary to the Christian faith. I'd elaborate more on this, but I don't want this topic to get locked or anything else.

I know that. I was just stating that I wasn't surprised about the percentage because of the fact that Christian parents think that their teachings are contrary to Christianity. So if you're on a Christian site, you're going to get a higher percentage of homeschoolers than the norm.

But homeschooling for college/university? I don't understand that one. Surely parents don't have the resources and the know-how to provide such a high-level of education (unless ofcourse, they're professors or lecturers themselves).

My mommy homeschooled us because she wanted us to learn the Bible. Our faith is the most important aspect of our lives. Not to mention, she wanted all 5 of us to be friends with eachother. My parents believe that our best friends should be our siblings. I do have friends away from my sibs but those are the ones who should be best friends. Our homeschool's official verse comes from either 1 or 2 Corinthians (I know verses, I forget references).
But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus." I'm pretty sure you can do that and not be homeschooled  But yeah, if you're looking for more time to teach the Bible and know your denomination's theology better, then I can see where homeschooling would be helpful.

Not to mention (at least in my experience) there's nothing in public school to encourage you in the Christian faith (and there's no real neutrality either). I know for us Mom was like, "Except for math, they teach everything contrary to what we believe- why would I send my kids there?" It also helps that she was able to be home and all that.

I think the math in school would of been fine if the teachers were... less lame. And Saxon is so much better than Abeka.

I must have been to the only public school on the planet where there actually was neutral when it came to religion (never came up, ever, unless we were reading stories that had a basis in it, and it was never disparaged, though we did have serious discussions about what people did in the name of religion), and only the evolution in science class could be construed as contrary to Christianity (which I don't believe as I don't feel they're contrary).

Mine was like this, too: the topic of religion really just did not come up. Also, there were several Christian teachers at my public high school, and even though they couldn't talk about their faith during class, I had a pretty good idea of who they were--at least, I knew who a lot of them were, and there were probably more I didn't know about.

@Atira and Kaori- It wasn't as if I was mocked and teased and what not, but there were just things that were disagreeable. And there was a family crisis back in the day that played a big factor in Mom bringing us home. My mom had told my former 3rd grade teacher something in confidence and she blew it to everyone- even the other kids in school found out- eh, it was terrible. And for some reason this awful woman wins awards and what not- eugh. Obviously, that doesn't always happen, but it doesn't help me miss public school.

Anyway...

About homeschooling for college? How are you supposed to do that anyway?

Maybe it's because I grew up in an area with lots of religious folks around but I never had any classes that taught anything contrary to the Bible in the school I went to either. Religion pretty much never came up. Even in my world history class they completely skipped over anything religious. Including the Catholic church. Don't ask me how you teach a world history class without mentioning the Catholic church but they did it.
