HELP! I did something stupid w/my new i-pod!

Postby rocklobster » Thu Jan 20, 2011 4:16 am

My uncle Karl gave me a new I-pod. It had belonged to someone else and even though I liked it, my only problem was it had a bunch of songs I didn't like. I didn't know how to get rid of them, (I've never had an i-pod before) and I saw the "erase all content" option. I stupidly thought it would only remove the songs and at least give me the basic functions (like the calendar, calculator, and settings), so I chose it. Here's my question: is there still hope or do I have a nice, heavy paperweight?

What kind of iPod is it?
Usually with most iPods, you can connect them to your computer to configure more of their settings.

Yeah. Just plug it into your computer and sync to iTunes. If that doesn't work for some reason, choose "Restore to factory settings" or whatever it is now, which should fix any problem that it may have.

goldenspines, it's a standard Apple I-pod. Do I need to know stuff like its serial number? (hope not)

I was actually wondering what kind (ie: Classic, Touch, Nano, etc.) But, does it look like this? http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k99/goldenspines/ipod-classic-80-gb.jpg

Though since Ante gave excellent advice, the type doesn't matter so much. So, I also suggest you restore your iPod to its factory settings.
You'll need iTunes on your computer for this. So, just plug your iPod into your computer via usb and wait for it to come up on iTunes. Then, click on its icon in iTunes and click the "Restore" button. Make sure to leave you iPod connected to your computer until it's fully restored. Once it is, it will give you the options to rename it and set your sync preferences.

Best of luck.

It won't cost anything, will it?

Nope. You can download iTunes free from Apple's website: http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

thanks for the help, but we're scrapping this idea. When I saw the warning about how the software may harm my compy, I said "forget this!"

Every software you download from the internet will warn about that... I think it might even be somethign that Windows pops up to make you double check that you aren't downloading somethign you don't want.

Yeah. My Mac does the same. ("This is an application downloaded from the Internet. Are you sure you want to open it?)
If you downloaded iTunes from the Apple website, it'll be safe.

Thanks for all your help! Just ripped my Chris Tomlin, The Fray, and Cobra Starship CD's! Now I'm working on RHCP's Stadium Arcadium and The B-52's Funplex.

lol, I'm happy you got it to work rock.
Derek -The Daring Pokemon - A cool, totally awesome Pokemon that uses his power of song, medical skills and powers of cool to make others see things differently. He is not temperamental, but he likes to pull pranks and grins when you fall into his traps. Usually, he styles a fedora and prances around on all fours, he's all black with a white belly.

"Although I look into infinity. I only see the lords eyes, always shining upon my face and smiling in my heart. He will always be with me, no matter where I may go. Always watch over me lord. For I shall be eternal in your light."-Derek.
