Japanese Snacks

Postby Ally-Ann » Wed Jan 19, 2011 5:19 pm

Well, I tried making dango; that didn't go so well. Nothing can mask the texture of it. I tried making mochi. Same thing happened with that. I want to try making takoyaki, but don't want to waste the money on buying the pan and then not liking the takoyaki itself. I really want to try to make nikuman, though. Does anyone have a Japanese snack or treat recipe that doesn't feel extremely gummy or is flavorless?

Here's a website I found a while back.
http://japanesefood.about.com/library/recipe/blrecipe_index.htm

Lots of Japanese recipes there. It's gonna take a while to know how to navigate it. Try something simple like Ice Cream
Psalms 82:3-4
Defend the cause of the weak and fatherless;
maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed.
Rescue the weak and needy;
deliver them from the hand of the wicked.

Dangit- I lost my majuu recipe. It made for a great dessert- you made a 'skin' of the dough, filled it with nutella, and steamed it! It was great! Gaaah....

Um, if you want to try takoyaki, best to just find some already made if you can. For one thing, takoyaki is...weird, and the stuff to make it with will cost a lot of money, and if you don't like it you're stuck with it.

Maybe try okonomiyaki if you can find the ingredients. It doesn't require any special equipment and it's pretty tasty.

The only Japanese snack that I can make that tastes good is inari sushi. That's the easiest Japanese snack to make besides rice.:lol:

I cannot STAND mochi. I tried to eat it one time, and before I got half way through I was like, "Can I please not eat the rest of this? T_T" The texture is just... ew, I can't stand it.

I don't have any recipes, but dorayaki would probably be pretty easy to make, and I personally think it's really delicious :3 I mean, it'd probably as easy as making pancakes (Though I can't say for sure, because I've never attempted to make dorayaki).

Also, I always thought taiyaki would be fun to make, though probably harder... While I was in Japan I saw like, a waffle iron type of thing for making them. You may be able to get one online or something. It's really pretty similar in taste to dorayaki. Except dorayaki only seems to have the red beans in it, where sometimes the taiyaki would have other fillings, liek whipped cream... or curry, which me and Yuki accidentally got once. D: But don't put curry in it, it was weird! O_O

Oh man, I wanna make dorayaki! That looks so good! And it'll be a good use for these azuki I have sitting around. :3

That link talks about imagawayaki, and something called an Azuki Green Tea Honey Latte. I wish they provided a recipe for that latte because it sounds freaking awesome.

I've found that there's something for Pancake Puffs that would work just as well- and I've seen it for as little as $20. I'm not sure if importing something for taiyaki would be more or less expensive...

Oh. My. Gosh. I ate mochi ice cream! Seriously, that's a piece of heaven. Nothing compared to eating mochi by itself. Honestly, if you guys haven't tried it yet, I highly recommend you try it.

^ Psh. Mochi has nothing on ginger ice cream! It's something that I can only really find at Asian markets!
