Wisdom tooth horror stories

So, does anybody have a good wisdom tooth story? I just all four extradited (yes, I meant to use that word) today. The pain wasn't too bad, and has gone away already, so I don't have much of a story. It will undoubtedly be back with a vengeance by tommorow, but I'll live.

According to my mom and dad, I had to brought out in a wheelchair, as I was still asleep for the ride home, and was told I looked terrible. (sorry, no picture to laugh at). Hopefully some of you will have a better story.

Addendum: I did manage to bring home a souvineir, they accidentally left one of those pads they put on your chest before surgery on my rib.

XD It had something to do with her anesthesiologist, who wasn't very good at it, apparently. XD He was trying to make the point that he had good nurses working for him and they would do a good job, but he didn't really go about that in the right way. XD

Man, I haven't been to the dentist in over a year anyway because they scare me. I know I have cavities and I've heard you can actually die from not getting cavities filled as well.
0.o I'm calling the dentist this week. Lol. And I really do probably have to get these wisdom teeth removed at some point.

I don't really remember getting my wisdom teeth removed, or the week or two or so afterwards....I just recall being groggy and loopy from the medicine, but that's about it. I recall waking up just slightly and wanting to go back to sleep after the operation but they wouldn't let me and that made me mad...other than those two things, I know nothing! lol

Navy dentists are usually pretty terrible, because they don't get as much training as civilian dentists. I had a friend on the ship who had his wisdom teeth removed, and the dentist somehow jammed a shard of one of the wisdom teeth up into his nasal cavity, causing him severe pain. It wasn't pleasant for him.

I had three of mine removed. Somehow while I was under they managed to scrape my lip, I turned out to be allergic to the pain medication (nothing too serious- it just made me throw up tons but I couldn't feel any pain). And one of the nerves didn't get a proper blood clot over it, so when the medication wore off I was in tons of pain- they had to stuff a numbing cloth INTO my gum to cover the nerve. And it tasted nasty and was dreadfully uncomfortable.

For clarification, do everyone need them pulled? I've had teeth pulled before so that won't be new, but just wondering.

A lot depends on the size of your mouth and whether or not your teeth are getting overcrowded. I had my 3 wisdom teeth taking out 6 years ago. Had a small mouth as well, but only one wisdom tooth was causing a lot of problems. Not only was it way out of alignment, but X-rays showed it was pressing against the nerves in my jaw as it was trying to come out, causing a lot of pain.

So, that sucker had to go. The other 2 were taking out 'cause my family and I decided it would save in the long run more time and money to get all of them out rather than remove the one that posed a threat now and come back later for the other two.

Not everyone needs them pulled. I don't think I will. All four of mine are here and aside from the pushing through, it's caused no problems. Geez, I haven't been to a dentist in like six years.

My regular denist I had quit the dental clinic he work for so a new denist took over. His name was Ripps. He worked on me for a hour trying to get my tooth out and then sent me to a oral surgeon miles away.
The surgeon had it out in five minutes.
The second wisdom tooth I had ended up in my nasal cavity and will never be removed.
My regular dentist he opened another pratice right after that so I changed dentist. The other place was shut down over money problems and some things that involved the law.
Just over a year ago my dentist retired and I have a new dentist working for a great company.

The most common complication that can happen after getting any teeth removed is dry socket. If not treated, I've heard the condition can kill you. Though, it's still very painful, even when treated.

Otherwise, if you have a good oral surgeon and you follow all the rules to take care of your teeth (or lack of) after surgery, things work out fine.

I have not had to have my wisdom teeth removed, but I have had to get five teeth removed and tooth implants put in. Everything went well, so no horror stories, beyond the thought of having screws in my mouth.

I am really hoping my Wisdom teeth just stay where they are (they exist but have decided to hibernate forever without coming in). After all, I'm 24, I should be done growing . I never wanted wisdom teeth anyways, I just want to remain naive!

Dude, Nate - spot on. They made me remove three of mine in boot camp, and two shattered under the drill; They couldn't do the anesthezia right (four shots, all in painful places), took hours cleaning it, and gave me veyr little medication. I found out later that the techs were interns, and now I still have holes in my jaw from it.

And you know what happened when I went to a commander to get my last one removed? It took three minutes, had virtually no pain, and was off meds in four days.

I assume you went through something similar.

I just made a dental appointment, but they can't get me in for 2 weeks. *Sobs*. My teeth and jaw have been hurting latley, I just hope I don't have an infection anywhere. It's my own fault if I do though for waiting so long. Plus I do know I still need my wisdom teeth removed. They told me that last year. I'm sure I'll have a lovely horror story for you all once this is all over with.

^ Maybe. I hope not. My brother's removal went just fine, and they removed 4 widom teeth plus on that was growing sideways in the roof of his mouth! But he was going strong a few says after that.

Oh man, a friend of mine was telling me about a coworker of his- the guy had a wisdom tooth pulled. The root was long and left an open passage into his nasal cavity. He had fun breathing through it until it dried XD

Yeah actually. I only have the wisdom teeth on my left side of my mouth removed--which is weird, considering that before I was booted out of nuke school, I was going to be on a sub. I heard it's pretty much a requirement to have your wisdom teeth all taken out before you go, but they never bothered with me. XD

Anyway I think the difference is, I had mine removed when I was in nuke school, so they probably had more talented and experienced people at that base, and I didn't have problems. My friend who got the nasal cavity problem, he had his removed by one of the guys on the ship while we were underway. I'd say that was likely the problem. XP

I haven't had mine taken out... I've had no issues that I know of... yet. :-/ I'll have to see if I will need them out sometime. I'm hoping not.

My mom got all four out, though. She got two out at a time.... Actually had a very eccentric doctor do it the second time. He told her that the anesthesia would take her to Neverland to see Peter Pan and Tinkerbell... But, she got them all out and survived it all.

i was awake for mine and all 4 of my wisdom teeth had to be taken out and they did it all at once. they had to put a lot of Novocaine in me because i guess i have a tolerance for it or something but it still hurt when they where taking them out. and the wisdom teeth literally sideways in my mouth so they where stuck and they had to break my teeth and what not and it took like an hour or something like that and when i got out my whole shirt was drenched in sweat i felt like i was drowning the whole time not fun lol

I had all 4 of mine taken out under twilight sedation (meaning that I was technically awake the whole time, but on a serious drug trip, so I didn't feel/remember anything.)
Just had to change the gauze when I got home and follow the post-op instructions. No complications and very little pain.

I had had a root canal a few weeks before and THAT hurt (got an infection.) But no problems at all from the wisdom teeth procedure. I had a VERY good oral surgeon. Unfortunately, I had to use CareCredit to pay for it and am still paying it off 4 years later. :/

I was lucky enough to get into the dentist sooner then the 13th, my dentist couldn't find any obvious cavities even with ex-rays so he thinks all my pain is coming from my wisdom teeth. Seems like I really do have to call the oral surgeon then. Yay. Lol.

no. it's really a matter of choice and comfort. if they're hurting then you probably want them out. my mum's are impacted but they've never caused her any problems so she's never had them out. mine are straight and coming in, but they're not causing problems atm. that could change though.

Luckily, mine were removed while they were still inside my gums and hadn't grown any roots yet! So it was just a matter of quartering them and pullin' em out! : D

I remember one problem I had after a wisdom tooth was pulled. My brother and sister in law had bought tickets to the Osmand Family show at the Kenndy Center. Well I had something sharp sticking me on my tongue everytime I tried to talk. Well there were four tickets so my girlfriend was invited along. We had gone to eat at Red Lobster and that was a problem. We got to the show and still I had problems with my mouth.
The next day to the denist and he pulled a tooth spur out of the side of my gum.

I slept all unconscious and peacefully drugged all throughout my wisdom tooth extraction, and the pain afterward wasn't so bad. It was easier than expected.

More memorable by far was loosing my last two baby teeth. They remained firm while my adult teeth started growing out the side of the gums. The dentist, after applying a generous dose of anesthetic, used a pair of...pliers? Something like that? And literally shattered the teeth in the pressure of a vise. The truly bizarre thing is this was never painful at all whatsoever.

I am teething as we speak. The wisdoms on my right side are coming in straight. The ones on my left side have yet to emerge.

My doc says if they get really painful we'll take them out, but the thing is aside from normal teething discomfort (which I can totally handle with the help of my teething ring) I feel nothing.

I don't have a teething ring. That was a joke.

But before I got my braces they removed eight teeth, so I think it balances out.
