Hmm...help translating a couple phrases into Japanese?

Postby Debitt » Wed May 12, 2004 10:55 am

My Japanese final is coming up in a couple days, and I'm going to have to preform a skit with a few of my friends. Of course, thre's one teeny tiny problem - we haven't finished translating out script yet. Most of it isn't too hard to figure out, but there are a couple lines that I can't, for the life of me, figure out how to translate:

1. The weather is great and everyone is really nice
2. Well we can't go today, we're still moving in
3. Yes, we can do that.
4. I've always wanted to do that!

:?: Lots of hugs to anyone who can help me. ^^;

Hmmmmm ... no guarantees. Did you want these to be "reaaaaalllly polite" or just conversational? It would also help to know if a guy or a girl is saying this.

1. ii o-tenki da na. Soshite mina san wa totemo yasashii da naa! (enthusiastic ^_^)
2. (as: well, because we're moving in, we can't go today) anoo, nyuukyo shiteru kara, kyoo wa ikenai.
3. Hai! sore (o, ga, nothing) dekiru.
4. Sore ga itsumo shitai yo!

EDIT: O-negai ... tell me if your sensei agrees with the translations. I'm learning too.

Out of curiosity, what did your teacher say? I would have translated that English differently, but Shooraijin's translations made sense too. I just know I'm no Japanese expert, so I'd love to know what you ended up using.

I was looking through some older threads, and we never did get the answer. Kokoro Daisuke san no sensei wa nani o hanashimashita ka?

How would you have translated them, Aka-chan? I'm kind of curious now ^_^

Well, I use more formal Japanese for class, so I would say:

1. (O)tenki wa yokute minna hontouni yasashii desu.
2. Saa, mada hikkoshi shiteiru node kyou ikemasen. (Which isn’t word for word, but the meaning is the same.)
3. Hai, dekimasu yo.
4. Zutto shitakatta!

I guess for the most part, it's pretty similar... Sorry, I love the Japanese language, and I tend to get overenthusiastic about it!

I can see most of your translations, too, except that 'shitakatta' implies to me (and again, I ain't a native speaker) that you wanted to do 'that' in the past (but now that's over and you don't want to do that anymore). That's why I picked a "present" tense, which is more correctly called 'non-past' since it basically covers for everything that isn't in the true preterit, unless you know something I don't (very, very likely ^_^).
