Twilight Saga

Talk about anything in here.

I don't greatly dislike it.
But I've grown towards hating it because of the fans. Sorry, but when things get really popular, I start to kind of dislike it. If the thing itself isn't really that great...well, I start to dislike it more...

wow, i've sparked a big discussion about this.

It is the fact that it is absurdly popular while good books get thrown by the wayside because they don't pander to fangirl emotions enough. It is the fact that its teaches young writers that you don't have to learn to write or be creative or doing anything productive with your writing skills, you just have to give ravenous girls what they want and money will pour from the sky upon you.

It is the fact that it smashes the burgeoning hopes of the writer within me by saying "you can't work your way to success as an author, because none of those skills matter: you must be chosen by the gods of the fangirls in order to succeed".

I hate Twilight because I find that fact to be true and soul crushing.

This completely sums up why I'm a hater of Twilight.

No, you don't have to do that. ]This, so effing much.

Furthermore-- and I apologize if anyone is offended by this --the writing style was so horrible that I couldn't make it past the first couple of chapters. It reads like fanfiction written by a 13-year-old. And before anyone tries to bring the "YOU HAVEN'T READ THE BOOKS" hammer down upon me, I have read plot synopses of the entire saga and that is enough for me to know that it sucks like a Hoover. Like the cold vacuum of space. Like...well, you get the picture.

If and when I ever read them, i'll probably be disgusted with them, and say, "I've just wasted 10 minutes of my life reading a book with horrible writing style." I agree whole-heartedly though. I tried reading a preview of it on Google. Worst. 3 pages. I. Have. Ever. Read. In. My. Life.

I also tried watching the trailors for the movies, and they totally ticked me off.

Other than this, I have nothing more to say that hasn't already been said.

I actually despised the series, but then my friend dragged me to the movie and I read the books afterword and I ended up liking it. One thing that originally kept me away from it was the crazy fans. I just tend to ignore them now. We'll put it this way, I'm easy to impress I guess.

By the way, some made a commant about Edward saying Bella was his herion, while I do think their relationship can be really unhealthy at times (New Moon as a bit much. He left her and she acted like life was completley meaningless. It was like that the whole book until he came back. She acted like someone died and it annoyed the snickerdoodles out of me.) But anyway, he was talking about his want for her blood, not their love as this was technically the beginning of their relationship when he said this. If I remember correctly anyway.

There's nothing wrong with liking something that may not be the best in terms of artistic value. For example, I enjoy Bleach.

One of the biggest problems with Twilight for me is that the author gave no reason for me to care about this couple. Why should I care if Edward leaves Bella?

I can't say I hate all the characters since I think Jacob shows a beacon of hope if it wasn't for that awful pedobear ending.

Jacob is awesome. I haven't read the last book yet, but I know what you're talking about. I found that really creepy an uneeded. They couldn't have given the poor dude a girl his own age instead?

You became Bella the moment you started reading her narration.

I don't fully HATE Twilight, but I have read better books. I think Twilight's romance was way too...ugh. I'm usually open to different kinds of vampires, but sparkly vampires? Come on! Funny thing is, Stephenie Meyer wrote a better boke called The Host which is actually pretty good. But I think vampires should be left to the true horror romance writers, who know what the natures of vampires are.

Doesn't it make sense that they would either abandon school, or at least have learned enough to graduate by the time the story takes place?

I have a new theory...

Stephane Meyer is an evil genius. She creates a fan service that appeals to millions of girls and racks in cash. That is the way of the 'fanwaiters', and we as writers must stop the epidemic.
(I would also like to add that Twilight and Stephane Meyer are not the only culprits, so this is not exclusively Twilight-related.)

Nothing to say that it's wrong to appeal to an audience, but there's a line it crosses before it becomes a fanservice.

Fun for everyone.
Mark Reads Twilight - this guy's blog is hilarious. He reads and comments on a chapter at a time and picks the story to pieces, while providing an insightful and intelligent analysis. There's some strong language at times and if you enjoy the Twilight series you'd probably best avoid it but everyone else should have a good laugh.

The only reason I don't particularly care for the books is the whole message of "If you are a woman and you don't have a man in your life you will be unfulfilled and alone and your life is meaningless until you get a man." I know it's because of the Mormon influence, but it's still an absolutely terrible message to send to girls.
Yuki wrote:Because you. are. Bella.

But that doesn't make any sense. There are straight guys who like Twilight. If Bella is supposed to be a self-insert character that the reader is supposed to identify with and want to be like, how do straight guys like it? So I'm calling foul on that explanation.

Oh yeah, one last thing. Everyone here complaining "Vampires don't sparkle baaaaw!" Well now you know why I can't stand Hellsing. "Let's make Alucard a vampire! Oh but a stake won't kill him and neither will sunlight and he isn't afraid of crosses and he can cross running water" and my response is "Oh, so you want to make him a vampire THAT IS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING LIKE A VAMPIRE."

Speaking of which, when's the last time you saw a vampire that wouldn't cross running water? I'm willing to bet most of you have never seen a movie where that happened. So quit pretending to be the experts on vampires and whining about what vampires do and don't do, because the mythology of them has changed so much that it's pretty much personal preference what you want in a vampire.

It is the philosophy behind vampires that matters, not the specifics. Essentially, they are the most BA predators of all time, totally dangerous and not-to-be-messed-with. That is the whole point of their existence. All the alterations you mentioned above are in line with vampires being the most BA predators of all time. While the specifics have changed, the core philosophy behind them hasn't. There isn't really any conflict between them and the vampire mythos of old, they have just been re-imagined by a new set of creative minds. Now making them sparkle on the other hand, well, that is about as opposite as you can get from most BA predator of all time. In fact, it is so ridiculously opposite it seems like it was designed specifically to troll vampire fandom. It is laughable.

To put it another way, it is perfectly fine to have Santa Claus come on the winter solstice and give kids little wrapped packages with candy in them if they had been good that year. That may be different from the Santa Claus mythos that we are used to, but it is totally in line with the philosophy of Santa: he is jolly guy that comes on a special winter day and gives kids awesome stuff. What isn't perfectly fine is to have Santa come on Christmas Eve and put cyanide in little kids' candy so that he can catch their souls when they die and drag them to hell. That is so totally and ridiculously opposite to the very idea of Santa Claus that it is laughable.

To conclude: Vampires should not sparkle and Santa Claus should not give kids cyanide. It is not simply a changing of a few details, it is the total opposite of everything that they supposedly stand for.

But I hate the Twilight Vampires most of all because they are perfect and have amazing powers and everyone should tottally want to be a vampire....*pukes*

While I used to be a huge fan of the series, I'm losing interest in it. Rather rapidly, due to the extreme fans, and the over-hype... it's a book series, and lovers and haters alike drive me crazy.

It's like both sides treat this book as something to defend or something to protest, and I'm like it is a book that really doesn't deserve any of this attention. I look forward to the day when the last part of the fourth movie comes out. Then the hype about them all will die and we can live in peace. (after the initial shock of the fourth movie is finally revealed horrendously on the big screen.)

Just thought I'd pop in and say you can like it if you want to, but I actually voted for Team Eric- The guy who ran over Bella. :P

I used to be Team Edward though...

You know what bothers me, the books are written for 14 year old girls, yet I find more and more middle aged and grandma aged women reading them. Just seems weird all these old women reading about love sick teenagers.

These books have no substance at all.

And what's up with the million+ vampire/darkness/etc novels out now? Everyone at work is reading them. They seem like Twilight clones.

I don't see how sparkling is the opposite of everything vampires supposedly stand for though. Besides, how is "the opposite of everything they stand for" bad? I remember a Perry Bible Fellowship comic where someone made fun of a kid for wearing a unicorn shirt, and the kid's unicorn friends impaled the bully on their horn. Unicorns were never murderous beings, but guess what? Making them murderous beings is pretty funny. Or how about Charlie the Unicorn and Candy Mountain? Charlie doesn't act like a unicorn now does he?

Now granted, these ARE done for comedy purposes, and Twilight isn't meant to be comedic. Still, even in serious works, it's not like terrible monsters haven't switched roles.

Hey, I know the perfect example! Godzilla. Ever seen the first Godzilla movie? He was a destructive, malevolent force of nature. He destroyed Tokyo, he was a terrible creature who cared not for the tiny humans. And guess what Godzilla became as the movies went on? Godzilla became a protector of the humans. A force of good, and Earth's defender against those who would try to destroy it. That's the complete opposite of how Godzilla started, now isn't it? And guess what? It was still totally awesome.

How about Catwoman from Batman who turned from a villain to a hero? Oooh, or Venom in Spider-Man, who became a good guy (of sorts)?

So yeah. Definitely don't buy "This is how something is and it can never be different ever!" That's just not true, and even if it was, I still fail to see how sparkling somehow makes Edward "the opposite of a vampire." Heck I remember reading a book when I was a kid called Bunnicula about a vampire rabbit who sucks the juice out of vegetables. Is Bunnicula a horrible abomination of a creature that somehow is horrid and insulting to vampires? I don't think so. In fact he was kinda cute.

Why doesn't the poll have the option: "I was the guy who almost ran over Bella"?
