TV Shows?

Postby TopazRaven » Mon Nov 01, 2010 9:29 am

OK, so I'm going to admit it, I'm a huge fan of TV and movies! Some Christians say you shouldn't watch TV because it can corrupt the mind and there are so many inappropriate things on TV these days. Yet, I've always watched TV! To much sometimes, granted. In fact if the cable ever goes out I feel lost. My question is, is it alright to watch TV, even with some questionable things as long as I personally know what is wrong and right? I am going to list every TV show I can ever remember watching.

Series Currently Watching:
How I Met Your Mother
Rules Of Engagement
Two & A Half Men
Hawaii Five-0
NCIS: Navel Criminal Investigative Service
NCIS: Los Angeles
CSI: Crime Scene Investigation
CSI: Miami
CSI: New York
The Amazing Race
Hell's Kitchen
Blue Bloods
Undercover Boss
Medium
Bones
Mike & Molly
Dogs 101
Cats 101
Last Chance Highway
Pit Boss
Underdog to Wonderdog
Groomer Has It
Pitbulls and Parolees
Animal Cops
It's Me of the Dog
(I watch a lot of Animal Planet shows. xD)
Wife Swap

Re-runs:
Gilmore Girls
Full House
The Golden Girls
Without A Trace
Cold Case
Everybody Loves Raymond
Seinfeld
The Waltons
Little House on the Prairie
Gun Smoke
Bonanza
Still Standing
Yes, Dear
The King of Queens
The Nanny
George Lopez
My Wife and Kids
Sabrina the Teenage Witch
Will & Grace (I'ma get yelled out for this one I'm sure.)
Fraiser
Meerkat Manor

Shows I used to watch (might get back into them eventually):
The Big Bang Theory
Supernatural
Ghost Whisperer
The Biggest Loser
American Idol

Anyway, this is what I remember at the moment. I know a lot of these shows have some very questionable material. Themes of sex, violence, drugs and alchohol as well as bad language considering most are comedies, crime or reality shows. I will also admit...I am not the model Christian. *Hides* I have a very questionable sense of humor myself. The point is, most of these shows aren't actually real and are purely fiction. If I know right from wrong, don't feel uncomfortable watching it and don't feel as if my mind is being corrupted or I am being drawn away from God, is it alright to watch it? Does anyone else here watch any of these shows?

Edit: Opps, forgot some other stuff I watch, mid as well add it now.

Hawthorne
In Plain Sight
Jerry Springer
Maury
The Steve Wilkos Show
The 700 Club

Here's what I watch, both on TV and online (in Doctor Who and Sarah Jane Adventures case, I watch only online because my cable company doesn't want to give me BBC unless I pay extra for the box. :mutter: :
WWE Raw/Smackdown
Mythbusters
Burn Notice (reruns)
TNA Impact
Doctor Who (currently watching reruns until I get to Colin Baker's era. Then I will alternate between classic and revival, beginning with Eccleston.)
Sarah Jane Adventures
I used to watch Heroes and Caprica, but both have been sadly axed. I am also eagerly awaiting the return of V. In the past, I was a huge Star Trek fan and also a big fan of sitcoms, especially stuff like Home Improvement, Saved By the Bell (Don't judge me!), Full House (no snickering!), Fresh Prince, Alf, and I even watched the classic sitcom Addams Family as a kid.
As you can see, TopazRaven, I'm not a model Christian either (points at wrestling). Hey, I need my guilty pleasures.

Lol, it's good to see I'm not the only one then! Oh! I forgot about Home Improvent and the Fresh Prince! I also liked Family Matters. xD What is Doctor Who about anyway? I hear about that show everywhere, but don't really know what it is.

As long as we're good with God and feel it's spiritually okay, well, that's why we can enjoy anime and manga that aren't much different than many tv shows.

I'm a huge fan of Home Improvement
Mythbusters
Eureka
Warehouse 13
Snapped! (and various other crime shows)
The shows on Discover Channel that have to do with sharks and history, etc.,
Paranormal State
A Haunting
Good Eats (yes, it's a cooking show. But it's awesome!)
Cold Case Files
American Justice
A lot of History Channel shows (Cities of the Underworld, Civil War specials, Wild West Tech, etc.)
NCIS
The Nanny

Nothing wrong with watching TV, as long as it doesn't get in the way of important things. If you feel comfortable with the content and can tell reality from fiction then you're fine.

Alright, thank you everyone! Though I have to say I think I do watch way to much TV. I still do other things like read, my chores, take care of my animals, go out with friends, hang out with my mom, volunteer at a cat shelter Sunday mornings, plan to go back to chruch, play video games, etc. However, I don't have a job at the moment and this does lead to a lot of time watching TV or on the Internet when I grow bored. I also have this habit of having the TV on at night while I'm going to sleep because I like the noise. To much quiet at night bothers me for some reason. xD I'm a strange person.

It's not that strange. I used to have to sleep with music on or I couldn't go to sleep! Nowadays, it distracts me too much so I need quiet if I want to get to sleep at night. XD

If the shows that you listed are considered "bad for you" by people, I'd hate to hear what they have to saw about some of the shows that I watch.

But really, it's not a big deal. As long as things are good between you and God, and so long as it doesn't get in the way of important things, I don't think that there is anythign wrong with it.

Ahahaha, that's good to know! I forgot to mention I like Hawthorne and In Plain Sight to. As well as some of those crazy talk shows. Namely Jerry Springer, Maury and The Steve Wilkos Show.

I personally believe as long as you know where you stand on the matter it's not a bad thing to watch television, but if you feel it is taking over what you stand for then you should immediatlly stop.

I love tv shows
my favourates including but not limited to:
Psych
Numbers
Big Bang theory
And this I pray, that your love would abound still, more and more with real knowledge and all discernment. Be prepared to preach the gospel at a moment's notice. Do you know the gospel well enough to do so yourself? Be ready.

Moved this to General Entertainment! Also, I noticed that you listed How I Met Your Mother, and I love that show so much. XDD I don't watch a whole lot of television, but the shows that I keep up with or have kept up with regularly (and recently) include HIMYM, Chuck, Community, and The Office (though I am way behind on that XD). Other favorites of mine that are no longer airing are Lost (BEST EVER), Arrested Development, and Pushing Daisies. I also watch pretty much any show that is hosted by Conan O'Brien. XD

And to echo many others in this thread, no, there's nothing wrong with watching TV. XD As long as you aren't compromising yourself or it doesn't become more important to you than Jesus, it's pretty much fine. XD Besides, there are TV shows out there now that are as good as (if not better than) some movies, and they can do so much more with an ongoing serial story than many movies are even able to. XD

Radical Dreamer, you relize you are made of win don't you? Lol. I'm so glad I'm not the only one who likes HIMYM, considering one of the main themes is kind of sex and many others would consider it inappropriate. I can't help it, I find it funny. xD Who is your favorite characer? I like Barney. *Hides*. He cracks me up. I also like Ted, of course he's the main character after all, and Robin. Lily and Marshall are lovely to of course. Ok, I guess I like them all. xD

I think that this means that we need a HIMYM thread.

This makes me so happy.
