Oh for the love of soccer!

Postby Gypsy » Tue May 04, 2004 2:23 pm

I know I'm not the only awesome person ... oof! I mean, I know I'm not the only soccer player around here. (Well, ex-soccer player if you want to get technical, but I still love it!)

So what position did you play and how far did your team go?

I played co-ed for two years, then our school split the teams (too bad, co-ed was a blast). I played center half and loved every second of it.

Slightly amusing story: I actually joined the soccer team on accident! I had just transferred schools and I thought I was going to the cross-country meeting - but I got the wrong room. After about 5 minutes into the meeting, I realized that they weren't talking about endurance running ... they were talking about soccer, a sport I had never, ever played before. Well, being the proud little snot I was, I refused to admit I went into the wrong room and ended up playing soccer for the rest of that year! (I even made it to a few cross-country meets on the side :))

It was the greatest mistake I've made so far.

ah...a constant diet of Mickey D's, long van rides to Lord-knows-where, general fun and hangingoutness, skipping school to get to games, intertwined with 80 minutes of hardcore pushing, shoving, heading, punching, blocking, kicking...other players...oh, yes...

Mostly fullback when I played in elementary school. We were perennially in the cellar.

I've played defence (fullback) mostly on the left; there were a few times I've played goalie, but that's mostly when playing with friends or when I was at the YMCA's junior soccer league; At school, the coach would sometimes place me as a forward. When I was at the YMCA teams I was on were pretty awful, but that changed in around middle school.

ahh yes...soccer... my freshmen year i played center forward but then last year i got to play sweeper which was so much better. being sweeper you can take people down, kick their ankles, elbow them, have shoving matches...get a yellow card...it's all so much fun. but i don't get to play anymore. *cries uncontrollably*

Our high school did not have a soccer team (boys or girls) and still doesn't. Soccer isn't that big a thing in Central IL, where football is the king of Fall sports (or HS sports in general). I played in a soccer youth league for many years, and always wished that I could've played in high school. Soccer is my favorite sport to play. I played mostly fullback or halfback, forward a few times, and never once played goalie.

I had to quit soccer this year because of academics...GAH!! >_< I kinda forgot about until a few weeks ago, when I rediscovered my love for it. Sophomore year I'm going to play for my high school team...I play goalie but I'm short haha...I could still block the best of them.

Yay soccer!

Soccer Sockim. . . .

Soccer was just about the only sport I played. I played it from first grade on through 8th grade at the same school. I am proud to say my team was the first team to have a 10-0 season at our school. Most of the seasons only have 9 games . . . thats why it is so rare.

When I passed into high school I kinda lost a place to play at. I didn't want to play select, because I wanted to enjoy playing, not play only to win. So as a result I played for a local YMCA. I don't ever want to do that again. Coed and not enough players. Four teams and they each only had 6 players. 4 on the field at a time.
games were like this A B C D teams, mine was B.
A always beat BCD (A was all Seniors, but the other teams were freshmen or soph)
B always beat CD and lost to A
C always beat D and lost to AB
D never won or even scored a point. really saddening.
It was like that for 3 seasons. Yeah, it was not much fun once my teammates lost hope.

I played swarmball, er, soccer, when I was like 6 or 8, somewhere in there. I can't really even remember expressing an interest in soccer to my parents (although I might have) but I ended up playing. Truth be told, even at that age, I sucked. Big time. Haven't played soccer since, and I don't much regret it. I couldn't play soccer now anyway, I have no endurance.

I played some little league basesall when I was about 10 or 11, but didn't continue in that either. Also, I played football for a year in high school, and sucked at that too. Generally speaking, I'm no athlete, but I have the heart of an athlete (I am super sompetitive and hate losing). I've generally given up on sports, but maybe one day I'll take up golf or something (and suck at that too).

Man this is depressing...oh well, at least World Cup Soccer is enjoyable to watch, although admittedly I don't know every nuance of the game. More power to those of you who are athletes out there, I think I'll just cheer from the sidelines.

Now the only sport I play roller hockey, but only at a recreational level and not on a team, because I can sub out at will, generally I don't need the stamina that soccer requires.

I have played soccer since 5th grade and totally love it! I played jv my first two years of high school, then made varsity jr and sr year. Jr year my soccer team won state, then sr year we got to the state semifinals.
Now I play intramural in college and also play pick up with a bunch of guys from in town. Hopefully, with God's help, I can be playing soccer well into my 70's!
