Kaichou wa Maid-sama. Even more unexpected that I'd actually admire the tsundere lead.

Actually, I'm one of those people who didn't expect to like anime in general at all. I grew up in a family where we thought Pokemon was evil. Now, I know it's just a show and I LOVE anime.

I saw Kiki's Delivery Service when I was a kid, but I didn't expect to like other Miyazaki movies (especially Howl's Moving Castle and Spirited Away.) I thought they were going to be all witch-craft-y new-age-y stuff.....but they weren't. Although they do contain some magical/fantasy/mythology/religious elements, they are all wonderfully executed and great films in my opinion. I'm glad that I've seen them all....although I haven't seen Princess Mononoke yet. >.<!

Someone on another forum: Pokemon are of demonic origin!

Someone else on same forum: I thought they were from Japan.

;)

Princess Mononoke was the first 'modern' anime I saw. Not my favorite Miyazaki (that would be a tossup between Spirited Away and Whispers of the Heart), but very interesting.

There aren't many I didn't expect to like and ended up liking (or loving).

Serial Experiments Lain (slow moving, almost no 'animation')
Azumanga Daioh (an anime about a group of high-school girls)
Digimon (back in the day - it was similar to Pokemon but actually good)

Whisper of the Heart isn't actually Miyazaki, it's by the guy who was going to be his successor who's name I can't remember.

It's a Miyazaki movie, included in the boxed set.

It's not directed by him, which is what most people mean when they say that, so calling it a Miyazaki film feels like kind of diminishing Yoshifumi Kondo's work in directing it.

Whisper of the Heart is excellent but it's not directed by Miyazaki. It's still a Studio Ghibli film.

Not a fan of shojo b/c its usually too light-hearted to the extreme and the usual female protagonists aren't really that smart in several typical ones, but I loved Ouran High School Host Club (which is an exception to the typical shojo) and DN Angel.

Honestly? Hellsing, it seemed like hack writing to name a major vampire Alucard. I mean really? Dracula backwards? Thats the best they could do? And is that a red wide brimmed hat?

However, after watching I was hooked. Not really for the story, but for the "over-the-top" EVERYTHING in this show...

-killer priests
-wielding guns that should be mounted on mecha
-magic catboys
-magic bullets
-vampire nazis

...yeah, not the best writing, but boy am I entertained.

Actually, Hellsing isn't the only one that did that. There's a Dracula movie from the old days that had an Alucard too.
