Power Rangers Re-Acquired by Saban for TV Run on Nick
posted on 2010-05-13 04:54 EDT
The media company Saban has re-acquired the rights to the live-action special-effects franchise Power Rangers from Walt Disney Company, and a new season will run on the Nickelodeon channel in the United States in the first quarter of 2011. Power Rangers is loosely adapted from Toei's 35-year-long Super Sentai Series franchise of costumed heroes. The Saban Capital Group had established a new US$500-million company called Saban Brands, which is developing the 18th Power Rangers season as part of a multi-year deal with Nickelodeon. The Nicktoons digital channel spinoff will also show reruns of previous seasons.

A new season was created nearly every year between 1993's Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and last year's Power Rangers: RPM, which ran on Disney's ABC. Disney had purchased the franchise in 2001, but decided not to place it underneath the Disney brand umbrella after focus group research showed that mothers disliked the violence. Disney has been shopping for a new owner for the franchise for more than a year.

Leave it to the parents to ruin kids' fun.:shake: Seriously, parents, there are more violent programs than Power Rangers. It's rated TV-Y7! Anyhoo, I'm glad to see that the Power Rangers get a new season after all.

.... What?! Parents are upset at Power Ranger's violence? That is disturbing on so many levels. Especially since I think (okay, personal opinion, but bear with me here) that Avatar: TLA is more violent, and I would have no problems watching it with my 7-years-olds. And Avatar: TLA is rated TV-Y7, too!

I also remember parents disliking Lord Zedd, saying he was far too evil for a kid's show. Which...doesn't make any sense to me. He's the bad guy. That's why they dumbed him down and made him goofy in later seasons (though to be fair, he was somehow more competent and powerful when he was dumbed down and goofy).

But now the question is this...they say a new season, but what do they mean by "new?" Because the reruns of MMPR being shown now are being touted as "new," I remember seeing it one morning and they were like "Coming up next, an all-new episode of Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers!" and my first thought was "If these are reruns of season one, how can it be all-new?"

But if they are adapting another series, I wonder if they'll go for Shinkenger or skip it and go with Goseiger. Skipping Shinkenger seems like the smart move because it would be difficult (though not impossible) to adapt, but adapting Goseiger would be tricky because it's barely started in Japan. Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

My parents actually barred my sister and I from watching Power Rangers as children, because every time we did we would try to perform kung fu moves on each other and end up breaking ourselves and other expensive things. That could explain why mothers dislike Power Rangers.

Oh, and while Avatar might not have the quantity of violence that Power Rangers does, I certainly agree that it is a more mature show, considering the genocide, the Face Stealer, and blood bending et alia. I guess just because no one dies on screen they can get away with the Y7 rating.

Let me put it this way. When I was a child, they actually censored Looney Tunes. As a result, when Elmer Fudd shot Daffy Duck, we never saw the reaction. We'd just see Elmer point the rifle at Daffy, then it'd skip to the next scene. God forbid we see Daffy's bill get knocked off his face.:eyeroll:

Wow, this is weird. My parents loved Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers as much as I did. That show formed my childhood imagination!

Of course, while I haven't seen any of the newer series more than once or twice, the "violence" isn't anywhere near as cool with computer graphics as with the old school models-and-sparks zord battles! And the show sort of lost its soul after Bulk and Skull left (for that matter, it was never as good once they joined the police).

Nonetheless, when Lost Galaxy came out I liked it so much that I followed the season religiously even though my brother annoyed me about watching kids shows.
...you must begin a reading program immediately so that you may understand the crises of our age... Begin with the late Romans, including Boethius, of course. Then you should dip rather extensively into early Medieval. You may skip the Renaissance and the Enlightenment. That is mostly dangerous propaganda. Now that I think of it, you had better skip the Romantics and the Victorians too. For the contemporary period, you should study some selected comic books.

I agree that skipping Shinkenger is the best choice. It would be hard to do because of the extremely heavy Japanese influence. I mean their helmets have kanji on them for pete's sake! XD
Though, I could easily see them skipping Goseiger as well because of wanting to skip anything that is "too religious". Of course when it comes down to it, it won't matter because they will change either show so much that it will most likely have nothing to do with the original Sentai series.

I can't imagine that parents' disapproval of Power Rangers is new information. XD Even my own mom told my then-seven-year-old brother he couldn't watch it anymore after he started mimicking the karate-style moves on my then-five-year-old self. XDD It doesn't make sense that parents seem to be more open to violence in animated shows (I guess because it's not "real people"), but it certainly comes as no surprise to me that they might react this way. I'd heard that the entire REASON Power Ragers wasn't coming back this year in the first place was because they didn't want to dub Shinkenger, and there only other option would have been to go back and dub some pre-zyuranger series, which would have looked odd in comparison to previous ranger seasons.

I think the news sites said this new season would be airing in 2011, so that seems like plenty of time for them to adapt Goseiger.

It wouldn't have been impossible to do Shinkenger, just fairly difficult.

Oh yeah, and I fell out of RPM. Did RPM do anything with um, Jungle Fury it was called in America? I was just wondering if they used any of the Go-Onger vs. Gekiranger footage because they have done that in the past.

Oooh speaking of which, is the new season gonna take place after RPM or not? That could be sorta interesting.

Well I know for a fact they used the Ohranger vs. Kakuranger footage in one episode of Zeo. I'm sure they probably have for other ones too.

As far as I know, there was no Jungle Fury/RPM crossover. I believe that one of the writers stated that RPM is AU to the rest of the seasons, because of the whole "post apocalyptic" storyline thing.

I don't know if I believe that, since in the Alphabet Soup headquarters, there was a helmet from the Operation Overdrive Rangers. EDIT: Also the theory that Venjix is the same General Venjix from the Machine Empire in the Forever Red episode of Wild Force.

Anyway, from what I've seen of press releases and whatnot, it looks like this is going to be an adaptation of Shinkenger after all. Which is...well, kind of weird. Maybe they wanted a year to figure out exactly how they were going to do this. Hopefully that means they'll do it well, but...we'll just have to wait and see.

animeondvd.com just got a sneak peek clip of Power Rangers Samurai. check it out.

http://www.mania.com/power-rangers-samurai-debuts_article_128253.html

Is it just me, or does that monster sound like Corey Feldman? There catchphrase sucks ><. And...the Pink Ranger freakin sounds like Amy Jo Johnson!!. Especially her yell when she does that jump. The theme music sounds like it has some of the notes from the original power rangers theme in it.

Just had to make a comment. Not sure exactly how many episodes total Johnny himself appeared (there was that one arc where everyone turned into kids afterall) But his character Adam was in the show for about 143 episodes. plus there was the episode he came back in Space, and then the Once a Ranger special, so more like 146.

Wow...that sucks so bad. I mean it is definitely Power Rangers alright. Same cheesy dialog...and music...and transformations...and just about everything else. What an insult this show is to the creators of Shinkenger. I feel like there is no fluidity to the lines. I mean it seems like the director was like "Alright now everyone say the first thing the pops into your head!" I watch this clip and I remember why I don't watch Power Rangers.

Let's not forget in an effort to capitalize on nostalgia, Nick decided to air episode three of Samurai first (because Bulk appears in it), meaning that there was no introduction to the characters, villains, or anything.

Yeah I don't think I'll be watching Samurai.

You know...as far as I can tell, that really IS the first episode of the series. O_O. all the episode guides and sites I've looked at have it listed as episode 1, and none of the episodes after it so far deal with the origins either. So either the creators are going for a poorl constructed "in media res" type beginning...or Nickelodeon just couldn;t be bothered to air the actual pilot episode. Either way, I'm dissapopinted ><

And I'm going to make a guess right now that Bulk's nephew Spike is going to be Shinken Gold.

I remember someone posting an episode list, and it listed the episode that aired first as episode 3. I could be wrong though. If I am, then Saban is the idiot. If I'm not wrong, then Nickeldeon are the idiots.

I really hope your right about the episode list, cause that episode really does not work as a first episode in any sense. But if they did skip the real intro, it seems they aren;t in any hurry to air it >< Stupid Nick. Power Rangers is back for two seconds and its already getting screwed by the network
