Funimation Streams Hetalia Axis Powers

Postby TheSubtleDoctor » Mon May 03, 2010 8:47 am

Link to the story.
The North American anime distributor Funimation announced on its blog on Friday that it has begun streaming the first four subtitled episodes of the Hetalia - Axis Powers historical comedy anime on its own website, YouTube, and Hulu. Funimation announced the license of the 52-episode series in January. The blog also noted that the dub for the series will give the characters accents.

Also on Friday, the North American manga publisher Tokyopop officially confirmed its license of Hidekaz Himaruya's original Hetalia manga. The Amazon online retailer had listed the first volume of the manga in early April. Tokyopop plans to release the first volume on September 10, "just in time for International Hetalia Day."

In a separate development, the official Japanese blog for the Hetalia anime revealed last month that a new game, Gakuen Hetalia Portable will be available on Sony's PSP system this year.

Both the original manga and the anime adaptation take the archetypal characteristics of about 20 countries and regions, and anthropomorphize them as (mostly) bishōnen characters. The story re-imagines various historical eras including World War I and II.
This series gets a lot of love and was recently talked about on CAA Radio, so I thought this item would be relevant. Here is a link to Funi's Hetalia youtube page.

Incidentally, I see that youtube gives H:AP a TV-MA rating. I'm kind of surprised by this; anyone care to shed some light on the rating?

I've seen the first seven episodes, and I would give it a PG. Maybe they think anyone under eighteen is too stupid to get history jokes?

This floored me. That's an incredible number of accents they are going to have to work with! Personally, I give them full points for ambition. And I am very interested to find out who is going to be in this cast, too!

Concerning the rating that Youtube gives Hetalia, there is some racy content in the series. The content in question usually does relate to the history part and is often very comical, but it is something that should be noted when wanting to start watching the series.
It's not a kid's series. So if parents were looking for an easy way to teach their kids history, try someplace else. XD;

Also, now I'm a bit interested on who Funi is going to choose for the dub cast. I will bet 2 cents that Vic will be Italy or France. Especially now that I know they are going for accents to match the countries. No idea who would fit the other characters, though.

Eric Vale might be France, since they gave him a French accent in Baccano! and it worked. Of course, Huey and France are two very different characters >.>

I would give it a TV-14 at the highest, but definitely not a TV-MA. I showed my little sister it, and I had no qualms about showing it to her.

Argh, I wish Del Rey had gotten the rights to the manga. I HATE Tokyopop translations. >:0 But, the sales will probably save Tokyopop from total destruction though.

Wow, didn't see any of those coming. XD It's a pleasant surprise though. Vic does fit as Greece and John Burgmeier as Switzerland will be fun. XD
It will be interesting to see who they choose for the main cast now. (Italy, Japan, America, Russia, etc.)
I'm still laughing over them getting the VA for Gluttony (Chris Canson) to play The Holy Roman Empire. XD
Thanks for the update, Wyntre!

I'm excited about Maxey Whitehead as Sealand and Monica Rial as Belarus (I really wanna hear an evil Monica. :D And I'm glad Vic didnt make the main cast- luv him, but there are just too many haters.

I think Travis Willingham would be a great voice for Germany. Just a thought...

--

Shedding more light on the TV-MA: apparently there is a part in a couple eps where the other characters send England to a box labeled F***. (in japan, english cuss words are like a joke- in one japanese fashion mag, there was purse for sale with F*** written on it in brass buttons. I_I ) So that could be it- also the random gay insinuations may have hyped it up. Either that, or they are trying not to be labeled as racists for streaming it. :eyebrow:

My question is who is the Ryan Renolds playing Latvia? Surely, it's not the actor that plays Deadpool, right?
And I don't understand why there would be haters about vic..XD

This update from ANN may answer your question:
ANN wrote:Update 2: Funimation has clarified that Ryan Reynolds is not the Hollywood actor, but a voice actress who has worked with FUNimation before. This is her first recurring role with the company.
It's J. Michael Tatum. He was Kyouya in Ouran and Isaac in Baccano
I knew I recognized that voice!

Also, the article updated, Patrick Seitz will be playing Germany. I find this amusing and a good choice because he plays Luke Valentine in Hellsing and Nekozawa in Ouran. XD

Chris Bevins has been announced as the voice of Japan.

Here's some more Hetalia dub goodness:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eYI_fp7Qa9I

2:08 is a clip of America's voice - whom many people are saying sounds like
Eric Vale
2:40 is a clip of England - and the guess for him is
Chris Patton
Also, someone saw on the Amazon page for the pre-order of the DVD's that
Todd Haberkorn,
Patrick Seitz and Chris Bevins were the actors listed as top billing. And since we already know Patrick is Germany, and Chris Bevins is Japan...Best guess is that
Todd
is Italy.

So, there's only...China now?

Hmm, can't say that I like the voice of Japan too well yet. But give me time, it'll probably grow on me. XD

I can't imagine the guessed VA for America playing him. It will be hard to keep up with how fast America talks. But, stranger things have happened. XD But, I am so very very happy they did not give America a southern accent. This was my greatest fear. XD

As for the England VA guess, I can see that one working out allright. I'm only worried whoever does it will not get the British accent right. D: It seems okay in the video, though. o.o I think he's my favorite voice right now in the dub.

I think the VA you're talking about for Italy could pull off China as well, but Italy would be the best for that VA. :D

I'm anxious to hear the rest of the cast. ^_^

Oh, I didn't even think of that! *Whew!* Yeah, I'm glad they didn't do that too...

Yeah, pretty sure he will be Italy. No one is immediately coming to mind for China, though. Looking forward to hearing about him.

I'll second that! Everything I've heard so far has only made me more happy about this. I'm hoping they give us a full episode dubbed soon on their website or something. It's going to be hard to wait for September. :)

Heeeeeeere's China:

Clarine Harp

Sorry about the double post. Wouldn't let me edit my last one.

So that means
Todd Haberkorn
has got to be Italy. Unless Amazon is trolling us...lol.

WWWWWOOOOWWZERS.... I wouldn't have expected Vic to be Greece XD But that works, actually... I be happy about that ^_^

And
Todd Haberkorn... as Italy... I dunno. After he ruined Prince Lin (Fullmetal Alchemist) for me, I don't think I would like that very much. Then again... I dunno v_v He might do just fine ^_^
Anyway, overall, I really like what I'm seeing of the dub!! This all seems to be great news :D

Aw, really? That's a shame. I've been looking forward to hearing that character dubbed. Unfortunately, though, I don't have cable/satellite, so I have to wait for the dvd's to be released to hear it. Unless Funi decides to stream some of them ahead of time.

Also, more updates! And my source was wrong about England. He's being played by Scott Freeman. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nR6gyYMUESE

I was right about France, though. But I'd know J. Michael Tatum anywhere. :)

And here's some more clips I haven't posted yet:

China: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v6HhOkqwrAM&feature=PlayList&p=743D6CE3B4156B9A&playnext_from=PL&index=4
Just because one VA ruined a part doesn't mean he'll ruin every part he touches. Lin and Italy are two very different characters and I'm pretty sure Todd will be able to pull off Italy better than he did Lin.
At least Dismuke wasn't Lin, though, right? XDD
We don't know for sure if the VA we think is going to be Italy. Amazon could be pulling our leg.
Also, Scott Freeman is an odd choice (I've only heard him as Yasopp in One Piece though), but like I mentioned before, he seems to be doing the best out of all of them from what I've seen. :3

And, agreed about Scott Freeman... He was an interesting choice :/

Ok, France clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P25A0zC-8-Q (warning: France makes a mildly yaoi-ish joke about England and America)

That laugh...

And yeah, after hearing a bit more of America...I'm pretty sure that's
Eric Vale
I could be wrong, though. Wouldn't be the first time. ;)

Edit: It's official! Eric Vale is America: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3djAAXEof0Y

And final cast edit: Todd Haberkorn has officially been announced as Italy. Several clips here: http://blog.funimation.com/2010/07/hetalia-cast-announcement-grand-finale-welcome-italy/?cp=1
