Usually I get around 6-6.5 hours of sleep. If I sleep over 7 hours, though, I feel groggy all day long. Good article, Volt.

I get about 8.5-9 hours of sleep each night. For a while I was getting 10, but that didn't seem to help me very much. I also don't really notice a difference between getting 8 or 9 hours of sleep.

I wonder if they took into account the fact that people who sleep longer might be lazy... ;)

I usually get between 4 and 5 hours of sleep. I find that I wake up easiest after 4.

Wish there was more information on the study.... did they take into account that the long sleepers may have had other influences in their lives?

I spent quite a bit of time a few years back with this sort of issue, and I finally figured that it wasn't that I was sleeping too much, but the sleep I was getting wasn't any good. In my case it was specifically Sleep Apnea (though I've not been to a sleep clinic to verify, it's the most likely cause)....

After years of being told I was just lazy... and just about driven to depression because of it... I made some minor changes and learned to live within my limits... and I've been much happier for it ever since.

For me it's helped to sleep on my side (though now my old bed doesn't have the give it needs and I'm waking with lower back pain, and occasionally pain in my hips), but if I get around 7-8 hours a night consitantly (I can do the 6 or less hour thing once in a while, but I can't do it more than a few days in a row)... I'm usually good to go, much better than I was years ago.

Don't be quick to call people lazy, even though I am somewhat, it wasn't the reason for oversleeping.

Interesting article though... there have been those days (years ago) when I've slept in all morning, and then was so tired it was only corrected by going back to bed for a few hours :))

I find myself often trying to wake up but can't in the morning that is unless I am suppose to make it to school or work in the morning. On average I sleep around 9-10 hours so I certainly fall under that 'oversleeping' crowd.

Nice study and topic in general, just some more information to further explore this subject would've been nice.

Oh wow. I don't sleep very much at all, but whenever I'm stressed, upset, or sick I just ignore everything and sleep. I don't bother to throw a fit, I just go to sleep. I find it really...helpful. ^_^ I just "sleep on it"..hee.

I usually get 7 or less hours of sleep on a school night, but yesterday I slept like 12 hours! (that's the longest I've slept in a while!) But I felt awful for the rest of the day. I wasn't tired, I just didn't feel good...too much sleep is bad!!!!!

While left alone I sleep 7-8 hours a night, I've found I can subsist on 6 basically indefinitely, though I need an alarm to get me up. Thank you for this article, Volt, I find it quite interesting (though I'd appreciate, well, more).

I thrive on about 8 hours a night, but I never get that much sleep on school nights. I can function fairly normally on about 5 hours of sleep, though later I might just snap and go completely crazy!!! And I've seen the results (luckily, only a few times) of total sleep deprivation, and that;s not a pretty sight! :wow!:

Hmm... Interesting... I somehow doubt that the perfect sleep amount is the same for everyone, though. Some people need as much as 10 hours, and some shouldn't have more than about 5... Not everyone is built the same...

There is a great deal of variety. Actually, I once heard of a special case in which a few individuals with both a medical condition and a strange situation involving something lodged in their cereberal cortex didn't need sleep. They had to rest to avoid exhaustion by physical activity, but the biological process that makes you need sleep was apparently gone. Of course, I haven't heard anything recently, so they might have died from it...

That sounds like an intersting story... let me know you find out more about it!

This kinda reminds me of the eye-jewlery thing.. I mean, how long will it be before doctors start destroying parts of your cerebral cortex to let you have twice as much time to do stuff :eyeroll: :shake:

I'm one of those who's awfully sensitive to oversleeping. If I oversleep by one hour, I get cranky and feel terrible. And yeah I never get up later than 10 a.m.

I usually get 6-7 hours sleep but I've done 5 and felt great.

On the weekdays my sleeping hours range from 4-7 hours of sleep or less and sometimes more and on the weekends usually around 11 - 14 or more hours. Yes, I am lazy.

I usually feel sore from oversleeping when I wake up after 1300.

Well... I napped in my some classes, oh yeah, I slept in study time class for 1 and half hours. At 3:00-7:00: When I got home from school, I slept then woke up at about 7:00. After 7:00, be on computer or hanging out with my sis. Stay up late till 1:00, went to sleep. That's like 12 hours of sleep. Mmm... I don't know that till now.

For the past 2-years I have been trying to get good sleep. I mean, at least 8 hours. The most at 9. Otherwise, all this year (weekdays/schooldays) I go to sleep at 10:00 fall a sleep at 10:45, and wake up at 6:00AM! I dont feel good at all... At least 9 hours, then its great. I hardly get that anymore (besides weekends :))
