Mozilla Firefox

Postby Straylight » Wed Feb 11, 2004 5:56 am

Looks like the next version of Firebird has just come out - Firefox 0.8. I tried the Linux version yesturday but it seems to have font issues, so I'm rolling back to 0.7.

I'm just about to try the Windows version...

Tell me if its better (maybe less buggy) than firebird :)

Can you transfer your 'search engines' from bird.7 to fox.8?

I'm using Firefox as well. It transferred my bookmarks and certain extensions over. I had to reinstall all my plugins, my themes as well as a few of my favorite extensions (like view in IE, google toolbar, and nuke anything). Otherwise its worked flawlessly. I can't believe they actually made it faster!

I downloaded it the the other day. The only problems that I was having at first was there were no scroll bars! Thanks to the Firefox Message Board, I had to switch to the default theme. Other than that and what the rest have said it's excellent.

Volt wrote:Just a question from everyone here. Does everybody hate Netscape or something? I've had netscape since... *too much counting* Anyway, I've always had netscape 7 and never had a problem, crash, error. NEVER. It's worked perfectly even when I abuse the program by opening up some 30-40 tabs.

My experience with Netscape was less than favorable... it was my primary browser for the longest time... an old copy of Communicator with all the updates, but it's biggest problem was that the JavaScript engine would crash or something if you stopped a page while it was loading (something I'd do often, esp. on dialup)... I'd eventually have to close the broswer and kill the task before I could re-start it and get my links to work and such (I susspect that it had to do with code being executed as it loaded, or partial code being put to use while the rest was still loading or something).

I switched to Opera a while back, my first run with it was rather buggy, it would crash for almost no reason (sneeze, crash.... reboot). Anyway, with v5 or v6 of Opera I started using the ad-based one full time, untill I switched over to Firebird some months ago.

I've had no problems for the most part with Firebird, I'm not sure why people call it buggy, then again, i run a clean ship here.... only 3 tasks on the task list (CTRL-ALT-DEL) when I boot.

In the end the same core that drives Netscape 7 is the one that drives Firebird and the other Mozilla browsers. What Netscape does have is all the extras tacked on (including the E-mail software, Newsgroup reader, and whatnot).... those things I use seperate programs for and would be a waste of system resources for me to install Netscape, not only that, but I think the system resource footprint for Netscape is much larger than these other Mozilla browsers, which is another plus in my book.

In the end you gotta go with what works for you.... and if you're using IE then you need to go with something else because IE just doesn't work ;)

I like it, but there are still a lot of things wrong with it, especially the download manager... why cant you tell it to tell windows to simply 'open' a file? :eyeroll: Also, when I use firefox on this site, whenever I use the 'quick edit' feature, pressing 'save changes' causes the box to move down to where it should be (and is on IE); you have to press it twice to save. For my 3rd complaint, it took me FOREVER to figure out how to [re]install the java plugin on a zipped version of the software.

However, this is FF 0.8 so I'm sure they'll have those things and more fixed by the time the 'final release' comes around :thumb: I'll be disappointed if it doesnt.

Hmm, I haven't had any trouble with any plugins with Firefox. I haven't used the quick edit feature enough to notice anything funky.

I'll probably get around to trying Firefox on this system, although Camino for the Mac just seems faster (and the official 0.8 release is just around the corner, so I'll wait and see if that fixes the few complaints about it that I have).

Just curious... why is firefox better if netscape has more features anyway? Cooler logo? The fact that its new?

The fact that by version 1.0 it will probably have knocked both layers of socks off all the competition?

Having used both Firefox and Netscape, Netscape has so much cruft tacked on that it's sloooooooooooooooooooooooooow (at least the Mac Netscape 7.1 is).

I miss Netscape 4 -- it may have been buggy, but it was quick.

I remember using NS a long time ago. It was so slow that my system crept along...>.< Actually, I'm not using Firefox. I tried it, but the fact that it takes so long to right click/save image as/and then actually SAVE was a turnoff to those of who gather images...XD I'm actually using plain vanilla Mozilla right now (hey, that rhymes!) and it works well for me. I just tuck the dl manager down in the system tray and don't mess with it while I'm downloading.
