I think that most of the ones that never heard of it, were the late Toonami that didn't see much anime like some of us did back, when Toonami was good.

Oh, I did see that trailer back in the day. But that's when I was young and my attention span/interest in it was very short, so when it aired, I only stuck around for a half-hour.
There are rumors on the Wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Submarine_No._6) that they are planning to create a live-action movie. But then again, this is Wikipedia ...
And you are right about the fan-bases--at the bottom has a listing of websites ^^.

At one point, the story about a live action movie of Blue Sub 6 was true.

It was posted on ANN back in 2005, but since then nothing ever came about it.

Guess they didn't have an efficient budget. Actually, I'd rather they not make one ...

I found it pretty confusing, too, but that might be why I kept watching it. Some people just don't like to watch movies and shows that require more work than sitting back and watching, and that's okay. However, it's a shame that such a great piece of work is largely overlooked and written off, except by the cult following who admire it.

But the sinners just don't know, that if they'd only turn around, there is a light there, a light which keeps shining on them ever so warmly. A light that will never fade." -- Vash the Stampede

Akira Takahashi (post: 1309279) wrote:There are a ton of really good shows that don't seem to get the recognition they deserve. There's also a lot of really good anime that get tons of hype, overshadowing the smaller gems. So, what's your favorite underrated animes?

1. Vampire Princess Miyu, both the OAV and the TV series. The OAV is much richer, but the TV series wasn't too bad, either. It's a shame that such an interesting idea didn't catch on to the masses. The only downside to the show is that they, namely the TV series, remind me of the Twilight Zone. I was never afraid of it, but I was always frustrated by the endings, and I hate feeling frustrated!

2. Haibane Renmei. What an amazing story that one was, and I wished that I would have found it so much earlier. Believe it or not, I feel that it actually helped me to grow as a Christian, much like Trigun did in high school (actually, Trigun opened me back up to the Word after I had slipped away a bit).

3. Last, but not least, Serial Experiments Lain, which kind of reminded me of Paranoia Agent for some reason. Not as good as Haibane Renmei, but it kept me guessing for a good long while!

There's plenty more, but I'd like to here you guys' input.

is Serial Experiments Lain really good? I was thinking about watching it

Can anyone sum up Now And Then, Here And There? I've never seen the anime and I just want a general idea of what it's about, no spoilers.

Shu is a typical Japanese boy, but has an unbeatable, optimistic and determined attitude. However, when he sees a mysterious girl with strange eyes named Lala-Ru up on a smokestack, he is soon pulled into a strange desert world. Shu soon discovers the true terrors of war, which includes genocide, brutal torture, hunger, thirst, and child explotation. Now Shu is trying to save Lala-Ru, as well as his hard earned, and often relunctant, new friends from the insane dictator, Hamdo. Whether Shu can possibly accomplish saving those he cares about while still holding up to his values remains to be seen.

+ for Witch Hunter Robin

Your Mileage Will Vary:

-Yu-Yu Hakusho (popularish, but really overshadowed by Bleach, which in turn was inspired by it)

-Planetes (the series looks kinda boring, but it's actually great)

-Human Crossing (dramatic, but in a good way)

-Infinity Ryvius (it's decent)

-Vision of Escaflowne (the series, not the movie. It's easier to watch the movie cause it's shorter + cheaper, but most fans agree that the series is much better)

I might be wrong, but isn't the Escaflowne movie completely different from the TV series anyway? It doesn't seem like that great of an option as an alternative to the series in that case anyway.

It's the series in about an hour and a half. With less character development. And more blood.

Actually it is a totally alternate version. While the basic actions of the characters remain, their personalities are atrociously different. For example, Hitomi is a nihilistic teenager with suicidal tendencies.

Le Chevalier d'Eon. A serious, exciting, intriguing series which seems to have few fans. Of interest to Christians and history lovers who don't mind all the details getting intermixed with pure fantasy.
...you must begin a reading program immediately so that you may understand the crises of our age... Begin with the late Romans, including Boethius, of course. Then you should dip rather extensively into early Medieval. You may skip the Renaissance and the Enlightenment. That is mostly dangerous propaganda. Now that I think of it, you had better skip the Romantics and the Victorians too. For the contemporary period, you should study some selected comic books.

As a fan of Escaflowne, I can say that its not an underrated anime. The funny thing is, Escaflowne was not as popular in Japan. Outside of Japan, it was a worldwide hit, In the US, it outsold Gundam and the first volume of the English DVD release of The Vision of Escaflowne was the forth best selling anime DVD for the month of September 2000. Producers noted that it was the worldwide success that led to the eventual creation of the anime film.

My favorite underrated shows:

1. SoulTaker. Excellent, excellent series. The art design and story are both terrific, but you NEED to read the manual in the first volume (Pioneer pressing only) in order to understand what's going on. I guess that's why it's underrated.

2. Nurse Witch Komugi. SoulTaker's spinoff show is like a PG-13 rated Puni Puni Poemi, even though it came out one year later.

3. Assemble: Insert. An often-overlooked spoof by Masami Yuuki (who also created Patlabor) that involves an idol singer who kicks robot butt, as well as badly acted Japanese energy drink commercials. I'm serious. XD

4. Aria The Animation. Cute cat things, a futuristic version of Venice, and great slice-of-life. Need I say more?

5. Princess Tutu. Not a lot of people know about this awesome show; I'm not even a fan of magical girl shows and I like this series a lot.

^ I second this.
Definitely worth watching ...AND buying. I've rewatched my DVD set at least three times and that's not even counting the times I watched it on TV. So it even has rewatch value! Also, even though the show is totally corny, the last time I watched it though, I CRIED. It has some of the most lovable characters... T________T

Yeah, G Gundam is great. It's slow to get started, but once it does, it doesn't slow down. I would say that G Gundam is underrated, because most Gundam fans hate it and everyone else is like "what's that?"

Record of Lodoss Wars is just too old to be under discussion much. I'm pretty sure many older English-speaking fans will have seen it. It's actually had airtime, as well, on the now-defunct AZN cable channel.

Fourthing G Gundam. I have this tiny flicker of hope in my heart that some newer anime fans will go back and discover it, since it's always struck me as a spiritual predecessor to Gurren Lagaan in the ways of the GAR.

I just pulled anohter great underrated series from the darkest places of my memory: Ashita no Nadja or Tomorrow's Nadja. I was drawn to it because the title suggested time travelling (which I'm tremendously partial to). I was kind of disappointed after having to ackowledge after the first handful of eps it had no time travel whatsoever and it was simply a slice-of-life series about the life of an orphan teenager in the victorian era as she's forced to leave the orphanage she had lived in following a fire that destroyed it, and join a wandering circus to search for her mother which she believes to be alive thanks to a present sent in her 13th birthday, but then I was fully invested so I kept watching to the end and I don't regret it. The overarching plot was a bit predictable, but most of the episodic tales were a beautiful account of overcoming hardship while holding onto your kindness and cheerful disposition, something that cannot be encouraged enough in our lives as we sometimes dismay and mop at triffling unconveniences.

I remembered two other great underrated animes, so I decided to rescue this thread from obscurity.

Saber Marionette: Disregard the really weird character design, the series is great, interesting characters, a solid sci-fi plot and one of the most beautiful endings in an anime series. The middle of the series lags a bit with episodes devoted to slice-of-life and comedy, but pretty soon things get hectic and very dramatic.

Jungle Wa Itsumo Hale Nochi Guu: Hands down the funniest anime series I've seen. I laughed much more than the usually regarded king of the genre, Excel Saga. I'm not sure why it never picked up, but I'm glad the fansubbers back then sticked with it and translated the whole thing. I wholeheartidly reccomend this anime to fans of comedy.
