pretty good. Covers everything important about Lupin III. I didn't know THAT Hayao Miyazaki did Castle of Cagliostro! ^^

Yep, that's him!

bigsleepj wrote:what other Lupin III movies are there?

Oops, I missed this

Here's the list I have. I don't know much about a lot of these, so caveat viewer.

The Secret of Mamo (1978)
Castle of Cagliostro (1979)
Gold of Babylon (1985)
Lupin III: Conspiracy (aka "Secret Plot of the Fuma Clan") (1988)

These ones were originally made-for-TV but were later released as OAVs or stand-alone direct-to-video movies, more or less.

Bye Bye Liberty (1989)
Mystery of the Hemingway Papers (1990)
Steal Napoleon's Dictionary (1991)
From Russia With Love (1992)
Order to Assassinate Lupin (1993)
Burning Zantetsuken (1994)
To Hell with Nostradamus (1995) posthumously after the death of Lupin VA Yasuo Yamada
Treasure of Harimao (1995)
Dead or Alive (1996)
Secret of Twilight Geminis (1996)
Walther P-38 (1997)
Tokyo Crisis (1998)
Love's Da Capo -- Fujiko's Unlucky Days (1999)
$1 Money Wars (2000)
Alcatraz Connection (2001)

Also, there are two non-canon L3 movies: Lupin the Master Thief and the Enigma of 813 (1979), made by Robotech animators Tatsunoko (probably as a deliberate attempt to annoy Lupin head studio TMS), and Toei's Lupin vs. Holmes (1981). Both of these were actually done in conjunction with Maurice LeBlanc, who owned the original Lupin trademark, and during the time in which TMS was having considerable legal trouble over the use of the character, but ironically are not considered canonical because TMS was not involved in their creation.

:eh: :shake: Wow! Thank you! I did not expect you to be so thorough! I mean, wow! I'm impressed!

I'll have to try to find these, but the only Lupin III movie available in South Africa is "Cagliostro". I may be able to get a few from England's Amazon.co.uk, but all they have is "Secret of Twilight Geminis" and "Treasure of Harimao". Are there any you recommend personally?

Thanks again!

Unfortunately, I don't know a lot about these titles (most of the shorter later works probably aren't even available outside of Japan, at least at the moment). Pioneer will probably start dubbing and releasing them, though, since they seem to have the distribution rights (I'm starting to see portions of the TV series appear in stores).

Hmmmm. Strange that not all is available considering how popular the anime is. Off course, there is that website called "dvdasia.com" or something like that were subtitled versions might be available. I'll have to see. Thanks anyway!

Well, I don't know *for sure* what's available and what's not, but I would imagine that the availability of a lot of these titles is due to increase.

Strange Lupin III picture

Postby bigsleepj » Fri Jun 11, 2004 5:18 am

Very odd indeed. Anyone seen it? It includes Nausicaa, supposedly.

I can't read all the Japanese (or English) lettering on that picture due to the reproduction, but that looks like some collection of Miyazaki's works, so it would make sense to have Nausicaa and Lupin III on the same cover.

Whoever drew it, a better artist than myself, should have learned that, white does not print on light grey. I would just like to know if there's a story behind the drawing and what, precisely, it says. Still, it's an interesting picture...

You might try CDJapan. I don't know if they have it subbed though...
Think happy thoughts.

Gravedigging with something to say (ahem).

I finished Castle this evening, and I loved it! There was no nastiness like in Secret of Mamo (for this reason, Fujiko's role is somewhat abbreviated, but still significant), but all the trademark madcap humour and a cute story.

Some nitpicks:

- The backgrounds are absolutely stupendous, but the characters are very plain without much shading generally. That was somewhat disappointing, particularly from a master animator like Miyazaki. They do move exceptionally well, though, so they're well animated (just not as well fleshed out as I would have expected).

- The VA cast is good, but I do admit I liked the VA cast from the Fuse dub of Mamo better. Goemon and Jigen were both reasonably well acted, but I got accustomed to Zenigata's "drawl" (even though it drives me mad every Kansai character talks in English like a Texan) and the nasal quality of the Mamo Lupin VA was perfect for the untrustworthy sliminess of the character, heart of gold or no ^_^ Fujiko was unfortunately a bomb here, though. There wasn't much to her at all.

- No extras?!

I spotted "Rupan III [sic] The Fuma Conspiracy" in Fry's the other day ... but ... trying to ... cut back for ... Christmas ... must ... save ... money ....
