I HATE Tolkien... Yet Love LOTR

I actually enjoyed the Silmarillion greatly (and books 2-4 or 5 of his notes, at least partially). I also read through part of the appendices at the end of LOTR. This said, I am the type to create a world around a story, though not as extensively as he, and I love how he does things so thoroughly. I agree that LOTR was dry, though I prefer it to the Hobbit.

After looking at this thread I have actually decided to read the Hobbit and am already 2/3s through. I see no problem with it and i think it is a fantastic prequel to LOTR.

Regardless, your air of hostility is unwarranted, Temmulin, and I suggest you drop it. The last couple of posts are hardly "Drooling senseless passion," or even "Die-hard." Monkey's now reading The Hobbit because of this thread, and Kanerou enjoys the world building aspect of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, which you admit in the title is the one book that you do enjoy. The only person who's keeping this alive anymore is you.

For this entire thread you have been acting incredibly self-righteous and I feel it is completely unwarranted. He might not have needed to bump the thread, but all he did was calmly post that he was reading the book for the first time and he disagreed. Where do you get "die-hard," "drooling," or "senseless"? He never used all-caps, excessive exclamation marks, or pejorative rhetoric.

By contrast, here are some quotes from your opening post:

uh... I was never really a Tolkien fan, i just saw the movies. This thread actually encouraged me to read all his books. So thanks for your long rant about how much some books sucked. Because of that I got into the series.

I admit when I tired to read LOTR I got bored, but once I got past the first 200 pages I started to become interested and kept going. Great story.

I also liked the Hobbit. Previously I tried to read the Silmarillion, but it got kinda boring for me so I stopped. Recently I picked it up again and actually found it quite interesting. But the story got so sad in a few places I had to stop for a bit. :0

As in comic books, the self-righteousness, power and resolve of a hero are just as big as the evil, cruelty and evil of their archnemesis. In other words, you cannot act smug, dismissive and hostile and not expect rabid fanboy counterattacking in rage, scorn and hostility.

It is quite clear that you are just being obnoxious on purpose, which I can look at rather well-humoredly. I, too have certain things that I "hate" as a fundamental and irrational impulse of my being, and that's allright as long as you understand that that's your personal, biased and subjective view. It's when you try to justify them through skewered reasoning and pretend to make everyone else see why you are so right and they are so wrong, is when we start having trouble in the community.

I, for my shame, have to admit being a more or less frequent patron of certain unsavoury imageboards, which makes easy for me to identify magic-enginered, mutant elfs that can only be killed by mystical blades, if you understand my LOTR reference That's why I'm not even gonna bother exposing my own reasons why "Tolkien ROXXX!!!!11!!"
