Passport problems...

Postby Bobtheduck » Thu Jun 25, 2009 4:44 pm

So many of you know I had a job offer in Korea, and was ready to go by the end of July. I had a passport, but it had the wrong birthdate on it.

I went to the passport site, and it said I just needed to send in a form for correction, and it would be nothing. No mention of any extra documents, just the application for correcting the date, and my passport.

It takes over 2 weeks after I send it before i get a call. They need a copy of my birth certificate. Well, guess what? The Navy lost my birth certificate when I was going through MEPS. And, being born in California and having been adopted, the combination of those two things means I need to go through Sacramento (I live in LA county... Sacramento is a 7-8 hour drive...)

The big thing, though, is their counter and public office SHUT DOWN due to budget cuts... The only way to do this is through the mail, which takes 15-20 weeks

15 weeks from now will be after when I have to first start paying loans... My job offer will be WAY PAST expired by then.

My parents are pushing me to get the old passport back (the one with the incorrect birthdate) and use that to get to Korea... And they're being pushy about that. I'm saying I don't want to get in trouble for fraud and they say "Well, you won't, it was an honest mistake" bla bla bla, the thing was... It was an honest mistake back in '01 when I got it, I don't think it's an honest mistake anymore... Even though it was an "honest mistake" I doubt the government of either the US or Korea would see it as such, either.

I already requested my application be canceled, but I'm REALLY wary of using an incorrect birth date.

This is so frustrating and stressful...

I think you're being appropriately cautious. You wouldn't want it to be labeled a forgery, or worse deliberately falsified.

Despite the county records person saying because I'm adopted I can't do this, we're actually to be going to the library in my hometown and trying to get my Birth Certificate. There's no mention of an adoption on the certificate itself, and the library's records office prints certified copies THE SAME DAY rather than the 15-20 weeks the State records office in Sacramento takes.

Crossing my fingers... Hope we don't have to drive into the desert for nothing...

Well, I went to the library in my hometown, and while they couldn't give me my birth certificate that day (since I wasn't in the system, as I was adopted), they did say they'd take my info to the county tomorrow and be able to access the state records and give it to me faster than the state or county agencies themselves would have.

So... Not a complete loss... I paid for two of them, just to make sure. I'm probably going to order a certified copy a year from now on JUST TO MAKE SURE from now on.
