It's certainly how it would be said in Japanese. :P

Woohoo!!! I say it like that!!! I feel smart now. *raids the frigerator to celebrate.*
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

Has anyone watched the azumanga daioh trailer? They totally say it MON-gah. Just watch it. They do.

Ehhhh ... maybe it's my California accent, but it still sounds like "mahn-gah" to me (just watched it again).

:shady: Gypsy....that comment was uncalled for you little stinker. Here's the deal guys...even though TECHNICALLY it's pronounced mon-gah, I find that incredibly retarded and about as intelligent sounding as a redneck trying to read a medical book. So I typically say main-gah. Gypsy likes to point and laugh on her superior high horse, but she has a bit of an accent herself. And hey! I like Osaka!

Oh yeah...and about the Texan quip...REMEMBER THE ALAMO!....I mean..uh....ok I'll just let that one go.

I'm from California and pronounce it main-gah...

Ah yes and to be on topic I read the manga just a few days ago and it's hilarious. It's a nice happy story, or at least I think so, considering that that was the first thing I read after chobits *sniffle*...

I'm in love with Yukari...never seen a teacher like that before lol...

Well I can understand you Ashley. I'm from Tennessee, so any average person around here would pronounce it "mayne-guh" (although my accent isn't very strong). I've been trying really hard to pronounce it the right way, but it's gotten to the point where my cousin has to hit me every time I say it wrong...

I watched the trailer. It looked pretty funny.

Anyways, I used to pronounce it "main-gah" or "man-gah" or something along those lines until I found out the proper pronuciation.

A little question on the manga (who proudly pronounces it MAIN-gah):

Does Yukari-sensei teach English or Spanish? I have the first volume, and the students' books clearly say "English I," while in some strips they show the students speaking Spanish in Yukari's class, and sometimes Yukari tells people to write something in English...it just confuses me. Can someone clarify it for me?

Thank you mucho.

Yukari is a foreign language teacher. In the case of the original Japanese edition that language was English. Of course, when the title was translated into English, English would no longer be a foreign language. Therefore, when this was published in English (primarily for a reading audience in the U. S.) the language she is teaching is Spanish.

Yes, but it seemed later in the manga that they were learning English in her class. Maybe I'm confused. *happens all the time*

Yes, she is an English teacher - it's quite funny to hear her English in the subbed version, actually.

I understand...last year I received about $200 worth of birthday money and it just disappeared...stupid Chobits phase :shake:. My friends and me, we now trade mangas and anime amongst ourselves, all because of our scant allowances.

I plan on working at Borders during the summer, so maybe I might get a discount or something haha...

My cousin once had a job at Sam Goody. To paraphrase my uncle's observation, my cousin made almost as much as he spent. ^^

Bump.... had to do it.

Was in Best Buy today (picking up a new HD 80Gigs for 100 with a 50 rebate, but that's besides the point).

Having seen the half-dozen or so animated GIFs in the signatures but not ever having remembered (or known) the name of the show the where from, when I saw it on the shelf (thanks to the big box set thingie that they had sitting there).

I don't normally buy Anime sight unseen.... but I'm glad I did.

I've only watched two of the episodes (I was only planning on watching 1 ;) ), but It's great! So to all the fine people sporting (or having had sported) Azumanga Daioh GIFs in their signatures, I think you.

Actually, ADV is releasing little 1-episode bites. I don't know if all the episodes will make it this way, but the first episode will soon be/is now available on "Animini" for, I think, $7 at Amazon. It includes a discount on buying the full disc, too.

Looks interesting.
On "manga" pronounction:
For my first couple months of....otakuhood....I pronounced everything wrong. I said "anamay," "mainga," "sayajen" (Saiyajin) and..."Azomainga dieoh". However, I have a friend who says "managa."
Think happy thoughts.

I've heard it pronounced both ways on other media(Television). Although manga is a romanized japanese word that would be pronounced as mahn-ga in Japanese, I find that pronounciation utterly ridiculous and it's my opinion that manga and anime have become English words on their own. I would thus pronounce manga as the word mango with the omission of the o and with the inclusion of the a. On a more on-topic note, I would pronounce Azumanga Daioh as Azumahnga Daioh because it doesn't sound as ridiculous and it is the original Japanese title as far as I know. By the way, as a South Floridian, I pretty much have no accent.
