Help with registry files?

Postby JediSonic » Thu Apr 15, 2004 1:49 pm

I just recently discovered that the reason I cant get Java to work in firefox is because I need to get this registry file:

http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/resources/firebird-jre142-fix.reg

Unfortunately, firefox opens the file as text-only, instead of installing it for me, and Internet Explorer gives me an error message when I try to install it. Of course there is a 'save' button on both browsers, but I dont know how to get into the registry folders using the save dialogue :eyeroll:

In short, I dont know how to get that file into the registry properly. I think the only way I'll be able to do it is through the registry editor program, but I dont even know how to do it through there! I tried making a registry key at "....\mozilla.org\Mozilla" like it said, and adding a String value named "Current Version" and setting it to a value of "1.5" but that didnt seem to work. What am I doing wrong?

Please help! :drool:

If I understand what you mean correctly, you should be able to right click to save the .reg file to your desktop and just click it to execute it from there. Windows should automatically apply the reg changes...you shouldn't need to put it in a certain folder, right?

EDIT: You should make a backup before listening to any of my advice...XD

Good idea, inkhy :lol:

It worked actually... sortof...

See what that does is the exact same thing I did when I tried entering the code manually. Which obviously doesnt fix my problem :comp: :sniffle: :waah!:

Argh I am soooo mad right now! I sure hope mozilla is satisfied with how many hours I've wasted trying to get java to work!

Ive tried installing, re-installing, deleting then re-installing, changing registry files, downgrading to a previous version in case of compatibility issues.. THE WORKS!

And I still cant get java to work :waah!:

You have tried restarting Windows, haven't you? I'm sorry... that's all I can think of to do. ^_^;

The best way is to use the installer verions of the browser (it's not offical I think) and then goto the plugins page and download Sun's VM from there. I had some problems getting it going at first myself, and a few other plugins as well.

There is more than one Registry fix for the browser, and not all of them are created equal.

Since I'm still using Firebird, I'm not sure if they've done an installer verion of Firefox yet.... might be worth the time to check the help and support pages for Firefox as well ;)

Great! I'm glad you got it fixed. I'll try to remember that in case I ever have a problem like that one...
