ha ha ha! i think of the funniest story... my sister, ash, is the biggest blonde ditz in the world (im not joking-she really is).

were all sitting there, and shes flirting with this guy who she really likes, while i sit in the background mocking her and rolling my eyes. brent (the guy) tells her that hes moving to maine. ashley (no lie) asks "wheres maine? is that the island?"

then she asked if people in texas speak a different language (thinking that texas is not a state), telling brent that this is something shes been puzzling over for a while.

i laughed so hard i almost cried...

kindof off topic, but note to those who bake: butter the cookie sheet when your making cinamin rolls because burnt sugar sticks really well.

excuse me, but i must go scrub a cookie sheet now...

When I think of Maine? Quiet living. Then again, I live smack in the middle of Silicon Valley (Half way between San Francisco, San Jose and Oakland. Wee!) Pretty much anything that's not here or LA or NYC I would consider quiet, I think. Given the latitude I would also think rain and cold, but maybe that's just me.

But that's alright. Because California lobsters strangely do not have claws.

Why would they need them?!? The lobsters are protected 24/7 by environmentallists with heavy weapons that sink trollers.

Actually, there is one thing. On the door of Dr. McConnell's office in the Bio department at Point Loma Nazarene University is a flaring white-on-red bumper sticker that declares, "AYUH. BEEN TO MAINE."

Oh, ok. I was just curious, because when I was working at a coastal B&B, people were generally surprised by Maine and the people. And only some people have that odd accent. It's usually the older generation.

They talk about a California accent as well, which I'm not really sure if I have or not. I do have a bit of Aussie in my speech, but that's because of growing up the son of one.

They aren't referring to a generic kind of New Englander type accent, are they? (Although I can't imagine some of the stereotype Baaaaahston and New Yawk accents getting that far north.)

Well, I could tell some pretty funny stories of Mainer phone conversations...but they would probably quip back with a few Texan ones too. Let's just say sometimes translations get lost, i.e.:
Shatterheart: I want a burrito shell
Ashley: what the...
Gypsy: oh gross, you eat CHICKEN gravy?
Ashley: I do?! What's chicken gravy? Well um, here try some queso
Shatterheart & Gypsy: ...
Gypsy: Girl, we need to get you some poutine. That's real food.
Ashley: Say what?!?
Shatterheart: Who's up for goat?
Ashley: YOU PEOPLE EAT GOAT?!?

But seriously, they don't really have accents. Unless you count that weird Ayuh thing. And I've been told I don't have an accent either, but that's because I actually try to enunciate, unlike most of the population here. :shady:

One of the weird things about living in New Mexico is people think that you live in a foreign country. Like when you call an airline or whatever they're called and say you want to go from New Mexico to Virginia, they say they don't do out of country flights. And when you tell people from another state you're from New Mexico they say "Oh really? I hear you can't drink the water down there."

Ugh, unfortunately my relatives. That would be West Texas through Lousiana...basically most of the "deep" south: Alabama, Georgia, Miss., etc.

There's a joke we have in linguistics which I think is pretty humourous, but then, I have a degree in it.

Anyway, you've all heard of the conservation of matter (matter can neither be created nor destroyed); well, neither can the letter R, because all the R's that Bostonians don't say ('I live heeeeahhh') end up in Texas ('Warshington').

I guess it would be funnier if I didn't have to explain it in detail. :sweat:

I heard the Rs migrate from Boston where they "waash the caah" to Texas where we "warsh" them. :rolls_eye

First, some of the Rs also come to my Chemistry teacher. Actually, a lot of them (He's a great guy, by the way).

Eh, I think you can do the Coke/Dr.Pepper thing in plenty of other places. Why? Because people, by large, are stupid.

Now that I think about it I say warsh sometimes too. I seem to be the only Virginian here too. I don't know whether to feel depressed or special.

Hmm. I used to think this, but then I had a change of thought on the matter. I believe people simply don't have (or choose to ignore) past experiences. This is probably the result of the tv/internet society that claims with a strait face, "It's OK to have LOTS of experiences, just don't waste your time thinking about them. That way you have time for MORE experiences."

That's an interesting thought... hmm...

While I think that's true, I'm still going to stick with my original comment. I have seen far too many people do things that I would call complete idiocy. I mean, take the presidents we elect (Democrat, Republican, it doesn't matter). Regardless of the given person's stance on the issue, people are more influenced by the modulation of their voice, appearance and their campaign ads, regardless of the truth, or lack thereof.
